The 2007 S550 has a 382-horsepower 5.5L V8 engine, while the S600 gets a 5.5L twin-turbo V12 engine that makes 510 horsepower and 612 lb-ft of torque. The S550's V8 is matched to a new seven-speed automatic transmission, while the S600's V12 runs through a five-speed automatic. All-wheel drive is available on the S550.Both the 550 and the 600 come extremely well equipped with both traditional luxury and comfort features and the latest high-tech safety and driving aids. All S-Class models come with eight air bags.Full leather upholstery and hand-polished wood trim are standard inside the S550, while the S600 gets hand-polished Gloss Burl Walnut trim.One especially notable interior feature is the Dynamic Multi-Contour Seats, standard on the S600 and optional on the S550. In the front seats, 11 individually adjustable air chambers optimize support for your back, even adapting for cornering forces.The standard sound system is a harmon/kardon audio system with 13 channels and 14 speakers. The system is MP3 and DVD audio compatible and also includes a six-disc changer and memory-card reader.The S550 comes with plenty of high-tech equipment, including a navigation system with a built-in 20-GB hard drive, heated seats, special interior ambient lighting, a power rear sunblind, dual-zone climate control, bi-xenon headlamps with active curve illumination, heated washers, and a hands-free communication system with voice control.The S600 adds nearly all the remaining S550 options as standard equipment, including an active night-vision system, dynamic rearview monitor, the Distronic Plus radar-based cruise control system, ventilated Dynamic Multi-Contour seating for the front and back, active head restraints, active body control (ABC), and a panoramic glass sunroof.All S-Class models get the latest version of the COMAND system, a screen-based interface that controls a host of vehicle settings, plus navigation, audio, and climate control functions.The S-Class also gets a new Brake Assist Plus system, which warns the driver of the potential for a collision, then applies full braking through the powerful four-wheel vented-disc system the instant the driver touches the brake pedal; the system also primes the car's safety systems. The S600 is also the first vehicle to be equipped with adaptive LED brake lights that flash rapidly during emergency braking, according to Mercedes-Benz.The S65 AMG is available for performance enthusiasts. Highlights of this vehicle include a bi-turbo 6.0L V12 engine, all manner of AMG enhancements, and the exclusivity that a $180,000 price tag offers.

BMW expects China to pass US as its top market in 2013
Thu, 11 Jul 2013When you combine two billion citizens, 100 cities with more than a million inhabitants and an economy that's as unrestrained as Jim Cramer on an Adderall binge, China's explosive auto industry growth shouldn't be a huge surprise. Audi already lists the communist country as its largest market, while Mercedes-Benz is expecting it to be there in the next few years. Now, according to a report from Automotive News, BMW is expecting the People's Republic to overtake the United States in sales by the end of 2013.
We already discovered the extent that BMW is going to in establishing a dedicated Chinese stronghold, when we explored BMW's Shanghai-based DesignWorks studio ahead of April's Shanghai Motor Show. And while we argued that DesignWorks Shanghai hasn't really borne fruit, it isn't due to a lack of sales.
BMW China has seen a 16-percent jump in year-over-year sales, lead by a 28-percent gain in 5 Series sales. Part of BMW's growth strategy comes from an ever-expanding dealership network. Remember those 100 cities we mentioned with over one million people? According to Karsten Engel, CEO of BMW's Chinese operations, those 100-million-plus city dwellers don't have access to a premium dealership.
UK workers strand car on island of asphalt to keep working
Wed, 06 Feb 2013Generally speaking, when you illegally park your car, you're likely to get ticketed and towed, but there is probably at least one motorist in Scotland who wishes that was the case. After workers had blocked off a portion of the parking lot for the Edinburgh Waverley railway station, the driver of this Mercedes-Benz S-Class reportedly moved some of the barriers to park in one of the empty spots.
Rather than having the vehicle towed, the work crew simply tore up the asphalt around the leaving just the one parking spot intact, and as you can see in the image above (posted to the Twitter account of Harold Norstad), the crew even built a small asphalt ramp so the car could get off its blacktop pedestal. Since this happened last week, there's no word as to whether the car was eventually moved or towed for the resurfacing work to continue.

Mercedes-Benz S-Class spied once again
Fri, 08 Feb 2013As evidenced by how little camouflage the next-generation Mercedes-Benz S-Class has been caught wearing lately, it can't be too much longer until the car will get its official debut. In our newest shots of the yacht-sized luxo sedan, the cladding still covers up the headlights, front fascia and most of the rear end, but we finally have an almost undisguised look at the rest of the car's lines.
Considering previous spy shots had more camo that better (or fully) concealed the S-Class' body, some of the more obvious things we see in these images include the prominent grille, the CLS-Class-inspired bodyside creases, the pointed trunk opening and, most interestingly, a lack of fancy exhaust outlets. Unlike other S-Class prototypes we've seen, this car does not have integrated outlets, but it does have two pipes on the left side of the car. All current S-Class models in the US and Europe feature a dual exhaust layout on each side of the car, so while some of our questions about the car get answered, it would appear that more are just arising.
