This Mercedes S600 is in great shape inside and out.  The original MSRP on this vehicle was close to $150,000!  Here is what Autoweek had to say about the car when it first launched in 2007:

Published on 3/02/2007

Even with almost 5000 pounds at the curb, the Mercedes-Benz S600 uses every one of its 510 stout horses and all 612 lb-ft of V12 propulsion to rocket down the drag strip in near-sports-car time. And its brakes are up to the task of reining in all that beastliness in world-class fashion.

There’s no confusing the S600 for a Porsche, however, at least from behind the wheel—or even from the back seat. Mercedes has given its big sedan a luxury-car makeover worthy of its big-bucks price, packing as many qualities and goodies as one might expect of a car costing close to $150,000.

“I had heard that Benz was upping the ante with the ’07 S-Class, but this car is equipped to just about drive itself,” said one staffer. Another added, “After driving this, I really began to wonder why Mercedes invested so much in Maybach. With V12 power and all the luxury appointments and electronic doodads that can fit on four wheels, you don’t want for anything in this S-Class.”

Owners we heard from gushed over the improvements Mercedes made to the quality of the interior, in terms of the materials used and the overall construction. “The improvement in build quality is amazing compared with other Mercedes-Benzes and other brands,” said one. “The interior is a work of art.”

On the road, the S600 exhibits excellent road isolation over even the roughest patches of pavement, perhaps the best we’ve ever experienced. Some tire noise does makes its way inside, but nothing in the way of vibration or rumble or roughness comes through to the cabin.

At the track, however, the S600 reminded us once again that Mercedes doesn’t allow for a complete shutdown of all available electronic nannies. There is always some measure of stability control cropping up when you’re pushing a Mercedes hard, and this one was no exception.

At the drag strip, it took a few runs before we could determine the best style for launching the S600—or, more specifically, to find out that whatever launch technique we finally chose didn’t make much of a difference. That’s because even with traction control turned off, at certain points we could feel it engaging, as in a last-ditch effort to control wheelspin.

We did manage a best 0-to-60-mph time of 5.08 seconds, short of the Aston Martin DB9’s 4.83 seconds but not that far off the Chevrolet Corvette’s 4.91.

We encountered similar issues in slalom, where the stability and body control systems would rear their heads even during less-than-enthusiast runs, countering what the driver already would be doing in response to wheelslip. We still managed 43.2 mph through our tight, 490-foot course—more than respectable for a car with a 124.6-inch wheelbase and measuring 205.0 inches long overall. That puts it just about on par with the likes of the much smaller Cadillac STS-V and the more powerful Bentley Flying Spur, both at 43.4 mph.

Braking was one big highlight of the S600’s performance at the track. The Corvette Z06 used just 105 feet to stop from 60 mph when we last tested it (and four of the five cars better than that were Porsches), and the big S600 needed just 106 feet, slotting it neatly in seventh place on our all-time-best list for brake performance. (The DB9 needed all of 112 feet.)

Owners said that they enjoyed the host of amenities that come standard on the S600, from the configurable heated and cooled seats, to the Distronic cruise control, to headlights that illuminate around curves. Some owners complained about the lack of an iPod connection, however, and others didn’t like having to look at a separate screen for the night-vision feature. But everyone cited the car’s performance as the foremost reason behind the purchase.

Or as one tester said, “This car does what you expect in this class, at this price, with this engine. When you floor it, it just goes, with no drama, no noise. You’re just gone.”

OWNERS SAY...

The S600 is the best sedan I’ve ever been in and is unbelievably comfortable. My only complaint is that the Distronic Plus interferes with my radar detector so I can’t drive the car at speed. I own a $150,000 car, and a $4,000 radar detector, and I can’t use either of them. I don’t buy these cars to drive them slow. Allan Abelow, Boston, Mass.

My favorite feature of the S600 is the Distronic Plus cruise control. I now use cruise control again after a decade of giving up on it due to traffic congestion. I also love the COMAND system as it almost never misunderstands my voice commands. The phone system is incredible and easy to use. The heated, ventilated, adaptive seats are terrific. I just wish it could play DVDs. I didn’t like the original wheels so I replaced them with the AMG set, and I also think the night vision is a waste of money, even though it works. The S600 returns to the basics of what a Mercedes should be with bank-vault solidity. David Cowen, Trussville, Ala.

I immediately liked the look of the S-Class, but the oval-shaped tail pipes, the Distronic and of course the V12 on the side of the S600 screamed, “I am not your average S-Class!” It is smooth at low speeds but when you mash the pedal and the turbo kicks-in, you better hold on tight. I also like that most of the features are standard. The S600 lets you know that your hard work and success provide comforts afforded only to a few, and every time I look out at that emblem on the hood, I say to myself, “I have arrived.” John Johnson, Boston, Mass.

I love the V12 with the power and acceleration the twin-turbo provides. When the active body control is activated, body roll is eliminated and performance through the turns is exceptional. Distronic Plus cruise is something every car should have. I didn’t like the post- sales experience. Mercedes dealers still have a long way to go if they want to be seen as treating their customers well, and the dealer’s lack of knowledge about the S600 was remarkable. John M. Sieberg, Morovia, Calif.

Paul di Resta returns to DTM with Mercedes

Tue, 21 Jan 2014

Some drivers manage to make the transition from one form of motor racing into another, and some run into trouble. Take Paul di Resta, for example. The promising young Scottish driver dominated Formula 3 racing in Europe in 2006, then moved over to Germany's hugely competitive DTM touring car series where he finished second in 2008, third in 2009 and first in 2010. But things didn't go as smoothly for Paul - cousin to retired Indy champion Dario Franchitti - when he moved in to Formula One with the Force India team.
In three years on the grid, he failed to score a single podium finish. Little surprise, then, that Force India opted not to renew his contract for this season. Left without a ride, di Resta is now going back to DTM with longtime supporter Mercedes-Benz, testing the new C-Class touring car today in Portugal. It's good news for Mercedes, which is celebrating 120 years in motor racing this season and, with 2005 champion Gary Paffett also on board, can now count two former champions on its DTM roster.
We wouldn't count Paul out of F1 for good, though. When he won the DTM title four years ago, he was also moonlighting as Force India's test driver, and we wouldn't be surprised to see him pull similar double-duty with the Mercedes F1 team (or another Benz-powered outfit) this year before spring-boarding back into grand prix racing in the future. At 27 years old, he may not have been the youngest driver on the grid this year, but he's still got a good few years ahead of him.

Is Audi getting complacent and suffering from brain drain?

Wed, 27 Nov 2013

The argument is made in a Reuters article: Audi is falling behind other luxury brands, such as Mercedes-Benz and BMW, due to a lack of research-and-development spending and "brain drain," or the migration of top executives and R&D chiefs to other parts of the Volkswagen Group. Reuters notes that Audi's current R&D chief is the third in 16 months.
Audi, which contributed to 40 percent of VW Group's $11.6 billion in profit the first nine months of the year, is delivering cars at a record pace: 1.31 million were delivered from January to October 2013 versus BMW's 1.35 million. Yet Audi, Reuters reports, doesn't have a halo car akin to BMW's new electrified i3 and i8 or an answer to Mercedes' plug-in-hybrid S-Class, and the R&D spending at Audi is less than BMW and Mercedes by a fair margin. It's noted in the article, however, that Audi benefits from other R&D spending within VW Group.
Reuters mentions that BMW "trumpets its new 'i' series" and the new Mercedes CLA and GLA ranges are winning "rave reviews" as part of its argument that Audi's recent lack of technological innovation could hurt future sales. Those cars do pack tons of new technology, some of which are firsts for mainstream production cars. But last time we checked, the i3 could be causing BMW's stock to slide, the CLA isn't receiving the rave reviews that Reuters would have you believe and the GLA hasn't been reviewed yet.

X1, 3 Series power BMW back into global luxury autos sales lead

Thu, 14 Mar 2013

BMW managed to eke ahead of Audi for the global luxury sales crown in February. According to Bloomberg, BMW saw deliveries swell by 7 percent in February, besting the 3.2 percent jump enjoyed by Audi and giving BMW a 407-unit delivery lead over its rival last month. Mercedes-Benz, meanwhile, continued to falter, with the brand selling some 37,229 fewer machines than BMW, whose factories are running at full capacity to keep up with demand. Models like the X1 (shown above) enjoyed a sales increase of 40 percent in February while the company's bread-and-butter 3 Series jumped by 26 percent.
Mercedes-Benz hopes to stem its continued market share loss with the addition of the entry-level CLA sedan to its portfolio in April. The company is set to roll out an updated version of its cash-cow E-Class at the same time, and a new-generation S-Class will follow along shortly thereafter. Meanwhile, the company is increasing production to meet demand for its A and B-Class models.
