Up for consideration is my wife's1979 Mercede 450 SL. If you've grown up in the last 50 years, then you've seen hundreds of cars and car companies come and go.....What makes the Mercedes SL of any year unique is that it's the type of car you aspire to own.....some day......"When I make it, I'm going to buy myself one of those!" was something I heard every time my wife saw one.....It must have seemed like a long way away from the seat of the Chevette she was driving at the time.....Years passed but the dream of that 450SL never faded......Finally, the time arrived and the hunt for one began.  Two years.. 1977/78 models had a bad engine...the timing chains had issues...The prices and condition, then as now are all over the place...Since only 250 miles have been put on the car in the 3 years she's owned it, the condition we bought it in is virtually the same as now. I purchased the car from a Palm Beach estate. The lady had only driven the car on her trips down during the winter.  She had all the maintenance done on the car at the end of every season. In fact, just prior to my obtaining it, the entire front end's 30 year old rubber bushings had been replaced. The car tracks like an arrow still...steering just as it should.. The silver paint couldn't look any newer. The brand new blue canvas top still hasn't seen weather...The car starts right up...drives like a Mercedes. The blue interior still looks good. The car only has 72,530 original miles. The chrome/glass is still great...The AC worked for the first year or so, but the car hasn't been driven enough to warrant a re charge...which is all it needs...Which brings me to why she's selling the car...It needs to be driven. It gets started and driven to the store periodically, but for the most part, it sits in the garage, like the statue it has started to become...Only obtaining a newer model enabled me to finally sell this one. Its a wonderfull, classic car in great condition...a  car that still gets attention everytime its out.. The car is available for sale locally so if it sells, I reserve the right to end the auction.   PLEASE DONT BID ON THE CAR UNLESS YOU HAVE THE MONEY...Good luck bidding.

Artist imagines eerie world where cars have no wheels

Thu, 24 Jan 2013

The wheel ranks right up there with the telescope and four-slice toaster in the pantheon of inventions that have moved humankind forward. But what if a circle in three dimensions had never occurred to anyone, and we all had just moved on without it? Perhaps we'd be driving around in Lucas Motors Landspeeders with anti-gravity engines. Or maybe we'd have the same cars we do today, just without wheels.
That's the thought experiment that seems to have led French photographer Renaud Marion to create his six-image series called Air Drive. The shots depict cars throughout many eras of motoring that look normal except for one thing: they have no wheels. The models used include a Jaguar XK120, Cadillac DeVille (shown above), Chevrolet El Camino and Camaro, and Mercedes-Benz SL and 300 roadsters.
Perhaps one day when our future becomes our past, you'll be able to walk the street and see with your own eyes the rust and patina of age on our nation's fleet of floating cars. Until then, Monsieur Marion's photographs will have to do.

Mercedes-Benz killing Maybach in 2013, replacing with S600 Pullman

Fri, 25 Nov 2011

According to an unnamed Mercedes-Benz source speaking with AutoWeek, the German automaker is killing off its Maybach line in 2013.
The unsurprising news comes after the brand was resurrected in 2002, but failed to meet sales expectations with its two core models, the Maybach 57 and 62. Further solidifying its fate, a deal with Aston Martin to aid in the development of future Maybachs fell through earlier this year.
According to the AutoWeek insider, the plan is to continue to sell both Maybach models through the end of 2013, after which the fifth-generation S-Class will go on sale. When that happens, three new variants of the S-Class will be available, including an all-new, range-topping S600 that brings back the Pullman moniker and may be better suited to competing with the likes of Bentley and Rolls-Royce.

Mercedes CLA45 AMG Racing is ready for a spot on the grid

Tue, 10 Sep 2013

Mercedes-Benz trotted out its CLA45 AMG-based racer at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show. We first showed you the sedan in the deluge of news and reveals that precedes most good auto shows, and were blown away by the car, formally known as the CLA45 AMG Racing Series.
We were strolling by the Mercedes stand, and figured we'd pop in and take a look at the new racer and its carbon-fiber body panels, gutted interior, and race-sourced aero parts. It's a looker, both as a road car and a track weapon. It's not clear what series the CLA45 AMG will qualify for, although it does seem like a shoe-in for the World Touring Car Championship. Let us know what you think of the CLA racer down in the comments. In the meantime, we've got a full gallery of live images up top, along with the stock images that were posted last week on the Mercedes-Benz Facebook page.
