Since its introduction decades ago, the Mercedes-Benz SL roadsters have been the favorites of many car lovers. From the spectacular 300SL roadsters of the mid 1950s to today's 600 horsepower Autobahn hammers, these wonderful 2-seaters are the perfect blend of luxury and performance. In the 1970s, the 450SL was a favorite of celebrities and the merely well-to-do. Stylish, reliable, comfortable, with more than adequate performance from the healthy 4.5 liter V8 under the hood, they remain popular today for all the same reasons.
This bright yellow 1979 450SL is a great car with just 126,592 original miles. The paint and bodywork, which is only just now starting to show its age. Yellow is a great color for conservative Mercedes-Benz, but on this little roadster, it's the perfect choice and compliments the car's spirited performance. Its styling has a timelessness to it that belies the fact that the car was designed in the 70s, and it has aged extremely well next to many of its peers.
Today, they are still considered prestigious cars and showing up in this one will likely win you front-row parking from the valet. The standard interior material in the mid-70s SLs was MB-tex, a material that wears like iron and looks good doing it. As a low-mileage car, the interior remains in nice condition with little wear and little damage to the seats. The carpets look appropriate for the time and mileage, while the door panels are beautifully preserved and the original Becker stereo system in the dash. The gauges are all functional, and today's designers could take a note from the clean, elegant design that conveys information without excessive complexity. Overhead, the black canvas top is in good shape, with a few tears from being stored will need to patched, and this car also includes a matching hardtop, which seals the car up as tightly as an equivalent Mercedes-Benz sedan. The 4.5 liter SOHC V8 under the hood has a bubbly, energetic idle, and pulls the roadster around with real authority.
These cars were also grossly over-engineered. The highly original engine bay shows signs of regular maintenance, and that's about all these cars need to be reliable for many thousands of miles. The 3-speed automatic clicks through the gears in a businesslike fashion, while the all-independent suspension soaks up bumps with a well-damped thump while still remaining sporting enough to be entertaining on a twisty country road. The famous Mercedes-Benz alloy wheels remain in good condition wearing a set of new modern black wall radials.
Given their popularity, 19-year manufacturing run, plus build quality that was truly higher than any car before or since, these cars remain excellent hobby vehicles. Costs about what you would pay for a used Honda Civic. So here is that most rare of beasts: an affordable, reliable classic car that provides enjoyable top-down motoring while being relatively inexpensive to own and maintain.

The wheel ranks right up there with the telescope and four-slice toaster in the pantheon of inventions that have moved humankind forward. But what if a circle in three dimensions had never occurred to anyone, and we all had just moved on without it? Perhaps we'd be driving around in Lucas Motors Landspeeders with anti-gravity engines. Or maybe we'd have the same cars we do today, just without wheels. That's the thought experiment that seems to have led French photographer Renaud Marion to create his six-image series called Air Drive. The shots depict cars throughout many eras of motoring that look normal except for one thing: they have no wheels. The models used include a Jaguar XK120, Cadillac DeVille (shown above), Chevrolet El Camino and Camaro, and Mercedes-Benz SL and 300 roadsters. Perhaps one day when our future becomes our past, you'll be able to walk the street and see with your own eyes the rust and patina of age on our nation's fleet of floating cars. Until then, Monsieur Marion's photographs will have to do.

Mercedes-Benz will expand its factory in Tuscaloosa, AL, to build the ML Coupe, a new crossover that will join its lineup in 2015. Mercedes will also ramp up production to build facelifted versions of the M-Class and GL-Class SUVs, lifting the factory's total production capacity to about 300,000 units annually in 2015. It made 185,000 vehicles in 2013. In addition to SUVs, the Tuscaloosa site also makes the C-Class sedan. The plans come as part of Mercedes' strategy to capitalize on Americans' increasing demands for SUVs. The company said the SUV market was up 12 percent in first half of 2014, and expects it to grow at twice the rate of the regular market in 2015 and 2016. "We are seeing climbing demand for SUVs." - Dieter Zetsche

We've spotted the all-new Mercedes-Benz GLA testing a couple times in recent months in getting closer to production form and shedding camouflage, but now it looks like we're see our first look at the AMG version of this compact crossover. The low ride height might trick some into thinking that we're just seeing the already-confirmed A45 AMG out testing, but the unique beltline, rear doors and side windows confirm this is some version of the GLA-Class. What makes us so confident that this is the AMG model? Well, for starters, this prototype has beefier brakes with cross-drilled front and rear rotors and bigger front calipers, but it also sports dual exhaust outlets poking through the rear fascia and a suspension that has been lowered considerably. Our spy shooters said that this car's exhaust note made it almost certainly an AMG model. Just to be clear, the GLA AMG will not be powered by a 4.5-liter engine. The closely related A45 AMG will carry the "45" in its name to celebrate the first 45 years of AMG, and our sources seem to indicate the AMG version of the GLA will do the same. We're expecting this sporty crossover to produce as much as 350 horsepower from its AMG-tuned four-cylinder engine, and like the all-new E63 AMG, it could very well come standard with 4Matic all-wheel drive.
