I am relisting as the gentleman that committed to buy my car could not come up with the remaining amount of money after paying the deposit.  While this is an unfortunate circumstance it is not the same as most of the stories we all read on ebay.  This is a story with a really good guy that seemed to really want this car.  He was so nice that when he asked if he could have 2 weeks to fund after he paid the deposit, I obliged.  He paid the deposit immediately and then I got the sense that he tried every avenue possible to get the rest of the money.  So while I am not angry and got to keep a deposit to offset some of the grief, I feel horrible that this guy doesn't have this 442 in his garage.  The reason I take this time to mention it is because I want to make sure the next person has everything lined up so that both sides can have a good experience.

1969 Oldsmobile 442

Outstanding opportunity to acquire a frame off restored 1969 Oldsmobile 442.  True to form of the great stories in the collector auto world, I came about this car by way of a trade.  I was selling my 1969 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray convertible 427/390 HP and even though I had stipulated, as I have in this marketing information, that I was not interested in trades, a very nice gentlemen from Dallas, Texas was politely persistent about his interest in my car with cash and his trade.  So, while fearful that I would hear of some worn out 1980 Camaro drag car with a blower sticking out of the hood I wanted to be optimistic so I agreed to take his phone call to discuss.  I was pleasantly surprised to find out that his trade was the beautiful car you see below.  The amazing part of the story is that my Dad, who instilled the love of cars in me, owned a silver '69 back in 1969.

Whether you are specifically looking for a Cutlass 442, or a big block Chevrolet Chevelle or Camaro, or a big block Buick Skylark, or a Pontiac GTO or big block Firebird, or a big block Ford Mustang or Grand Torino, or even a big block Mopar I will bet I can guarantee one thing. You are tired of looking for the right vehicle, getting your hopes up that you have found it, only to find out that what you have actually come across is another piece of junk. It is time consuming and exhausting, but if you have read this far you know this is a different opportunity.

That being said, this is also not a 442 that can be bought for $15,000-$25,000 like many out there. Now, I am not degrading those vehicles. The right vehicles in that price range have their place and can be a blast; and there are plenty of them out there. In fact, I have someone drop a note on the seat at shows or under the windshield when I am out in it with an unsolicited offer for between $20,000 and $25,000 every month or so hoping that they have found the cool muscle car they have been looking for locally and in their budget. That said, they never seem very suprised when I tell them what it will cost. Also, only recently have I decided to let it go.

Again, this is an opportunity for the enthusiast with some reasonable wherewithal. The buyer that knows that relatively few well spent dollars can net significant value and more hours of hassle free enjoyment. Also, I have to mention how much attention this GM "A body" 442 gets. I own/have owned six figure cars whether they be C2 big clock Corvettes or 1962 Bel Air Bubbletops that have been feature cars in Rod & Custom; this 442 can hold its own parked right next to them, draws a crowd, and gets nonstop "thumbs up" going down the road.  Truth be told is that even though my Dad had one of these, he is a dyed in the wool Corvette guy and he is amazed at how much attention this car gets; he believes the silver with the red interior is part of it.  I have to admit that it makes me grin when he is in the silver 1966 big block Vette that you see in one of the dropbox photos and I am in the 442 and someone comes up to the 442 at an ice house or show before even making a comment about the Corvette.

This particular 442 may look familiar to you which may be because it recently went across the block at the Mecum Muscle Cars & More Auction in Houston, April 5, 2013. The bid reached $29,000 which means that the last bidder was willing to pay $30,740 with the buyer's premium; but also means I would have only neted $26,790 with the seller premium. I want to disclose this for additional comfort for all those that may not be completely comfortable potentially buying a vehicle over the Internet. Simply put, this information means that there was a group of people, that had inspected the 442 in person, that were willing to bid it to the amount above. You may see the auction results by going to this link and simply providing Mecum with your email address as a log in:

Please review my seller feedback, as well as my buyer feedback. I have a good amount of vehicle transactions ranging from less expensive than this 442 to the six figure range all with 100% positive feedback.

You probably know this if you are a 442 enthusiast, but these cars where known as the "Gentlemen's Muscle Car" and I think that describes the car perfectly.  It drives like a dream and cruises comfortably on the freeway at any speed.  I have had my fair share of muscle cars, and this one just feels right in any setting whether rolling up to the oldest ice house in Houston or for a nice night out with your lady, this 442 is right at home.  Make no mistake though, this car is fast, so it does take a bit of care.  It will light up the tires from a stop and catch rubber through 2nd and 3rd.

So with all of this you may be wondering why I am selling a vehicle that has a great tie to my Dad and that I liked enough to take in. Well, like many of us, I have an active pursuit of this passion and the enjoyment of these old rides-with only so much garage space.

Serious and qualified prospective buyers, please free to contact me by message through ebay or via phone at 713.444.5088. Please note that I will not accept bids from those with negative feedback and that those with zero feedback must contact me prior to bid. I reserve the right to end this listing at any time as vehicle is listed locally and being marketed through other media. Thank you, Charles

Jay Leno bangs up his own Toronado in GT6

Wed, 11 Dec 2013

Ever since Gran Turismo 4, Jay Leno has had at least one of his cars included in the popular racing simulator (starting with the Tank Car), and more of his machines appears in Gran Turismo 6. They include this nose-heavy, front-wheel-drive V8-powered muscle car. Yes, that aptly describes a 1966 Oldsmobile Toronado - except Leno's is rear-wheel drive. And it has a Cadillac CTS-V race engine modified to pump out 1,070 horsepower.
For the latest Jay Leno's Garage episode, he takes his real Toronado out for a cruise and then drives the virtual one like he stole it, accruing some body damage along the way. Leno also drives the virtual supercar Mercedes-Benz designed for GT6, the AMG Vision Gran Turismo Concept that debuted at the LA Auto Show, along with the real one, which is a 1:1-scale model. The model is radio-controlled and equipped with a small electric motor, sufficient to move it on and off of auto show floors.
Head below to watch the episode, which includes a few words from GT6 creator Kazunori Yamauchi.

Ferrari FF pitted against Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser in crazy Generation Gap comparison

Thu, 13 Nov 2014

The folks behind Generation Gap have lost their minds with this latest video. The goal here is to determine the ultimate family cruiser, but the choices are what you would least expect, with a heavily modded 1970 Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser going up against a 2012 Ferrari FF.
You might anticipate an over-40-year-old Oldsmobile to pale in comparison to any modern Ferrari, but this wagon has a ton of secrets under its skin thanks to Lingenfelter. First, it packs a supercharged LS3 V8 with a claimed 650 horsepower and a six-speed manual gearbox. That big upgrade in power is further helped with air suspension and massive Wilwood disc brakes. The result is nothing short of deafening, with blaring yelps whenever the driver even nudges the accelerator.
The alternative sounds just as good, albeit in very different way. The Ferrari's 6.3-liter V12 pumps out 651 hp and 504 pound-feet with a part-time all-wheel drive system. While the FF lacks a lot of the hauling ability of the Olds, it makes up for the deficit in handling, luxury, and in many eyes, simply by having the famous prancing horse on the grille.

This Or That: 1980 Oldsmobile 442 vs. 1989 BMW 635CSi [w/poll]

Thu, 09 Oct 2014

The last time I roped a coworker into an automotive debate, I lost. Resoundingly, I might add. Still, 2,385 voters chose to cast their lots for the Fiat 500 Abarth, as opposed to 5,273 choosing the Ford Fiesta ST, and so I can rest easy in the knowledge that at least 30 percent of you, dear readers, see things my way. I still like to think we have more fun, too.
My loss in the first round of our This or That series, in which two Autoblog editors pick sides on any given topic and then attempt to explain why the other is completely wrong, didn't stop me from picking another good-natured fight, this time with Senior Editor Seyth Miersma. Last time, our chosen sides were eerily similar in design, albeit quite different in actual execution. This time, our vehicular peculiarities couldn't seemingly fall any further from one another: A 1980 Oldsmobile 442 wouldn't seem to match up in comparison to a 1989 BMW 635CSi.
How did we come up with such disparate contenders? Simple, really. Seyth and I mutually agreed to choose a car that's currently for sale online. It had to be built and sold in the 1980s, and it had to be a coupe. The price cap was set at $10,000. The fruits of our searching labors will henceforth be disputed, with Seyth on the side of the Germans, and myself arguing in favor of the Rocket Olds. Am I setting myself up for another lopsided loss?
