Sacramento, California, United States

History: This car was purchased by the previous owner in 2001. Prior to that it was leased for two years so that when she purchased the car it had 20,000 already on it. It was sold buy her in December 2013. The complete history is on AutoCheck, here on Ebay, and CarFax, if you prefer that service, but both services track the mileage readings each year that it has been smog tested and on that basis it is possible to conclude that the mileage record is genuine. This car has 51,600 miles on it, and the AutoCheck rating system indicates that most cars of this age rank from 13 to 34, whereas this one ranks 62. The owner donated the car to a charity in December 2013 and I purchased it from the auction in the beginning of January 2014.

The car needed a bath when I got it, and not much more. I had a friend detail the car, got it smog tested and had the brakes and lights checked and then drove it for a few weeks.  This is a great car. very easy and fun to drive.

Condition: It was obviously lightly used, but it has also been superbly maintained. There are absolutely no fluid leaks and every connection in the engine compartment appears to be factory original. All the glass is clear, all the accessories work, including the cruise control. And the leather interior is in great condition and feels great.

As is the rule in California, the car has been Star Smog Tested, which is a procedure done on a Dyno, on 02/04/2014, and the readings were quite notable in that the measured readings for %O2, Hydro Carbons (PPM) and CO % were read at 692 RPM Idle and at 2608 RPM and all measurements were 0.00.  That is the signature of an excellently maintained car and you can almost see sunshine coming out the tail pipe.

Features: This is a very handsome and luxurious car, of course, and I believe that it was intended to compete against the Lexus type cars and it does so very well.  What it gave to the market in it's day is style and luxury in a medium sized car and it added its own style in that unlike the Toyota and Lexus cars, the Oldsmobile had Bling and eye appeal that went way beyond those others.

MPG: The great equalizer.  I checked this car out on the EPA fuel economy site and it appears do be dead equal with the V6 Toyota Camry, in that they both rate at 26 MPG Highway and as I do own a 2003 Camry and I get that number routinely and that's also what I got from this Alero, I say they are just about equal in MPG.

The Bad:  Just the few scuffs from being in a garage for 15 years. Just minor stuff.

Ebay History: This car was previously listed on ebay as an auction with reserve. It appears that auctions in February are not capable of attracting enough interest on a car like this one. That is why I am now re-listing the car, for the next 30 days, with a buy-it-now price approximating the dealer selling prices in Norther California. I encourage you to take advantage of the Make Offer feature as well.

I have only driven the car a few hundred miles since I bought it in January and it is very tempting to just drive it but of course that would mean it would receive more use, but the car has impressed me very much during the 400 miles I have driven it, it is absolutely a delight to drive and I am sure you will enjoy it too.

Questions: Please feel free to Call me , or Text me at 916-284-0176. If I do not pick up, be assured I will call you back as soon as I can, no need to leave a message. Thanks, Jim

GM recalling 8.4M cars, 8.2M related to ignition problems

Mon, 30 Jun 2014

General Motors today announced a truly massive recall covering some 8.4 million vehicles in North America. Most significantly, 8.2 million examples of the affected vehicles are being called back due to "unintended ignition key rotation," though GM spokesperson Alan Adler tells Autoblog that this issue is not like the infamous Chevy Cobalt ignition switch fiasco.
For the sake of perspective, translated to US population, this total recall figure would equal a car for each resident of New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Montana, Delaware, South Dakota, Alaska, North Dakota, the District of Columbia, Vermont and Wyoming. Combined. Here's how it all breaks down:
7,610,862 vehicles in North America being recalled for unintended ignition key rotation. 6,805,679 are in the United States.

eBay Find of the Day: 1976 GMC Motorhome is a jolly green giant

Wed, 18 Jun 2014

If you have a need to relive the 1970s, then here is the vehicle for you. This groovy blast from the past is a 1976 GMC Motorhome currently for auction in Florida on eBay Motors, and it is one green machine - just not in the modern sense.
The seller claims that this beast has had just two owners and has covered a mere 61,308 miles in its decades on the road. It's reportedly never been restored or repainted and comes with all of the necessary books and manuals. A 7.5-liter (455-cubic-inch) Oldsmobile V8 with a three-speed Turbo-Hydramatic automatic transmission powering the front wheels propels this far-out RV, and the double set of rear wheels out back use a self-leveling air suspension to provide a cushy ride.
The purported low miles and good condition really make this GMC a stand out, though. The exterior combination of lime stripes and beige with just a touch of green is like nothing else on the road today. Plus, the polished bumpers and wheels make it all pop. Inside, it's even better with monochromatic green upholstery and shag carpet. It features everything you'd ever need on a long trip, including a bathroom, kitchenette and lots of seating. The only hint of modernization is an HD TV next to the stove, but its size is a perfect fit for the hole there.

This Or That: 1980 Oldsmobile 442 vs. 1989 BMW 635CSi [w/poll]

Thu, 09 Oct 2014

The last time I roped a coworker into an automotive debate, I lost. Resoundingly, I might add. Still, 2,385 voters chose to cast their lots for the Fiat 500 Abarth, as opposed to 5,273 choosing the Ford Fiesta ST, and so I can rest easy in the knowledge that at least 30 percent of you, dear readers, see things my way. I still like to think we have more fun, too.
My loss in the first round of our This or That series, in which two Autoblog editors pick sides on any given topic and then attempt to explain why the other is completely wrong, didn't stop me from picking another good-natured fight, this time with Senior Editor Seyth Miersma. Last time, our chosen sides were eerily similar in design, albeit quite different in actual execution. This time, our vehicular peculiarities couldn't seemingly fall any further from one another: A 1980 Oldsmobile 442 wouldn't seem to match up in comparison to a 1989 BMW 635CSi.
How did we come up with such disparate contenders? Simple, really. Seyth and I mutually agreed to choose a car that's currently for sale online. It had to be built and sold in the 1980s, and it had to be a coupe. The price cap was set at $10,000. The fruits of our searching labors will henceforth be disputed, with Seyth on the side of the Germans, and myself arguing in favor of the Rocket Olds. Am I setting myself up for another lopsided loss?
