Most Baby Boomers remember back in the day that the "rich kids" owned the new Chevelles, Mustangs, GTX's, etc. , and everyone else was transplanting small blocks into Tri Five Chevies. The young segment of America needed an inexpensive mainstream model with an inexpensive special engine. Chrysler executives realized this, and began designing big engine, low frill unibody performance cars.

The  Road Runner is recognized by many automotive experts as perhaps the second most significant Muscle Car in history, next to the  GTO.  This amazing machine almost single handedly shifted the market back to the most bang for the buck roots of the movement. The success of the Road Runner would quickly surpass that of the more expensive GTX. Plymouth corporate  sales estimate for 1968 was 2,500. Actual sales of the hardtops and pillar coupes was approximately 45,000. In 1969, this number increased to a whopping 82,292 units.  Indeed they had hit the mark! The automotive industry praised the simplicity of the concept.

In 1976 the Road Runner name was switched to the 2-door model of the replacement for the Valiant series. This car, based on the new F platform, would be known as "Volar?". The new Road Runner was primarily a trim and graphics package; however, many suspension parts were borrowed from the police packages. A 360 CID engine was offered as an option (but only with a two barrel carb for 1976-'77 and single exhaust) to the standard 318 V8, but only paired with the 3-speed automatic transmission

The Super Pak option consisted of Road Runner tape stripe, front air spoiler, wheel opening flares, quarter window louvers, and rear spoiler. In the era of gas sipping, puny compact cars, the Road Runner was still able to provide some punch and also an aggressive look for the younger crowd.

Barrett-Jackson 2014: 1970 Plymouth Hemi Superbird passes half a million dollars

Sat, 18 Jan 2014

The Plymouth Superbird is one of those classic American cars from the muscle car era that has captured the imagination of all sorts of automotive enthusiasts long after its presence on roads and race tracks wore away. It's easy to see why. Where else but in the Swingin' Sixties and Seventies would a car leave the factory with an aerodynamics package that included a pointy beak and a rear spoiler that sat several feet above the rear deck?
The example you see above, which was born in 1970, is one of the finest Superbirds we've ever seen. Combine its complete restoration with its original 426 Hemi engine, and it's no surprise that it managed to bring in a cool half million dollars (plus 10 percent in fees) at Barrett-Jackson. See it yourself in our high-res image gallery above, and scroll down below for the official auction description.

SRT belatedly claims Plymouth Prowler as one of its own

Wed, 19 Dec 2012

Before Chrysler had Street and Racing Technology, it had Performance Vehicle Operations. What the two entities have in common, before SRT became its own brand, of course, is that each was created to take Chrysler and Dodge (and Plymouth, before it was unceremoniously killed off) vehicles to the next level of style and performance.
We'll leave the question of whether or not the old Plymouth (and later Chrysler) Prowler was ultimately a stylish, performance-oriented car to you, but the boys and girls currently leading the SRT charge at the Pentastar headquarters are keen to accept the retro-rod into the fold.
According to the automaker, all of SRT's current high-performance models owe a debt of gratitude to the old Prowler, due mostly to that car's use of lightweight bits and pieces and innovative construction techniques. If nothing else, the fact that the Prowler's frame is "the largest machined automotive part in history" is pretty cool. Read all the details here.

US Marshal's classic muscle car auction officially in the books

Thu, 25 Sep 2014

The US Marshal's so-called Blood Muscle Auction was completed earlier this month, with the prestigious nine-car field (two cars were added following Autoblog's initial story, a 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 454 and a rare, mid-restoration 1971 Plymouth Hemi 'Cuda) finding new and hopefully law-abiding owners.
While we'd normally recap the stars of the show, in this particular auction, every car's sale was newsworthy. The full list of sale prices doesn't seem to be published, but according to The New York Times, the auction brought in a total of $2.5 million, or an average of about $277,000 per car.
The king of the contest seems to be a 1970 Plymouth Superbird (above, right), complete with a 426-cubic-inch Hemi V8, which brought home $575,000. The trio of Yenko Chevys, meanwhile, all easily cleared the six-figure mark, with the Yenko Camaro (above, far right) clearing $315,000, the Chevelle crossing the block for $237,500 and the supremely rare - one of just 37 - Yenko Nova (shown above, left) selling for an even $400,000.
