This GTA was shipped to me in New Orleans from Pennsylvania in November of 2012.  Since I have had it I have replaced a TON of parts and invested thousands of dollars.  I too was scared of the high mileage of this vehicle, but I know the previous owner  - He is a mechanic and rebuilt the engine at around 120K.  The transmission was rebuilt around 165K.  The drivetrain is 100% solid - nothing to worry about there.  It does not burn or leak any oil and does not blow any smoke, and she starts every time.

Mechanical Details:

Heads were redone with stock parts, all bearings and seals were replaced - Engine is .040 over with stock roller cam and heads.
Engine mounts were replaced when engine work done
25lb/hr SLP fuel injectors
TES headers W/ High Flow Cat, 3' back
High volume/high pressure oil pump (Oil pressure is always high because of the high volume/high pressure oil pump - It is normal for the gauge to show off the charts)
Spark plugs are NGK +4 and 10mm spark plug wires from Accel
Horsepower is estimated between 275-300.  Not tuned, stock chip
TPIS airfoil in throttle body
Radiator is 5 years old,
Water pump 5 years old
160 degree thermostat less than 500 miles on
Heater core replaced 5 years ago
BBK fuel pressure regulator Adjustable and currently set to 47PSI

I won't list every little switch and button I have replaced on the car, so here is the critical stuff:

Replaced the cracked rubber spoiler with fiberglass spoiler from Hawks Thirdgen Parts
Welded in tubular subframe connectors from Spohn, and painted red
Installed steering brace - 'Wonderbar' from Spohn
Replaced front sway bar end links
Less that 100 miles on 4 new tires
All new AC system: (compressor, condenser, tank)
New throttle body
New black carpet with masbacking from ACC (and had all seats shampooed while removed)
New Monroe front struts and ACDelco strut mounts
New rear Monroe shocks
Hew headliner
New dashpad
Installed 3.5mm headphone jack in front of original working Delco tape deck
New rear hatch shocks
New front seat belts (most have the plastics cracked)
All new GTA emblems & birds
Recent cooling system flush

Things to know:

Both fans are manually controlled by two toggle switches mounted on the dash
Original power antenna is not present, I have a 3' plastic one in its place
There IS rust on this car.  Surface rust underneath, some in driver rear wheel well (I sanded and painted it with POR15 so it will NOT continue) and there was rust on the passenger side floor pan.  When I replaced the carpet, I sanded that area and painted it with POR15 so it will NOT continue.  There were 3 small rust holes, I painted the underside of them as well.)
The exhaust is rusted out and will need to be replaced - But it still sounds awesome
The VATS security system was removed - Thank goodness!
Driver seat had a rip - I sewed it
Rear seat has a cigarette hole in it
One of the strut mounts failed and the strut poked up and made a nipple size dent in the hood (see picture)

Coming with the car:

New unused AC Delco spark plugs
Smog Pump delete pulley
Front sway bar bushings
Door spring compressor and replacement pin kit (driver side bushing needs to be replaced)
Owners manual, professional shop repair manual (1,000+ pages), Haynes Repair Manual
Faded original window sticker

How to turn a Pontiac Fiero into a trackday car

Fri, 17 Oct 2014

Imagine hitting the track in a mid-engine, rear-wheel drive sports coupe that's affordable and has pretty good parts availability. It might sound like a pipe dream, but it's actually quite possible, if you're willing to think a little outside the box. The Pontiac Fiero is out there just waiting for a little work to turn it into a competent racing machine.
Think about it for a second. Of course, we would all like to be snaking through the curves in something exotic, but what happens when you crash or something breaks? The bills are going to mount up quickly. However, if you ball up a Fiero at the track, as long as you're not hurt, then it's not a huge tragedy.
That's basically the story of Steven Snyder in a new video from Drive starring Matt Farah. Snyder wanted to go to the track cheaply and ended up with an awesome little Fiero with a huge wing and a claimed 220 horsepower at the wheels thanks to a V6 from a Chevrolet Lumina. Check out the video to see how this pint-size Pontiac performs.

Lutz dishes dirt on GM in latest Autoline Detroit

Bob Lutz sits down for Autoline Detroit - Click above to watch video after the jump
Autoline Detroit recently played host to Bob Lutz, and, as is always the case, the former General Motors vice chairman dished out some great commentary. Lutz was promoting his new book Car Guys vs. Bean Counters: The Battle for the Soul of American Business, and talk quickly turned to his role as it related to product development and high-level decision making at GM. While on the topic of brand management, Lutz revealed a few rather interesting tidbits about his former employer:
All Chevrolet vehicles were required to have five-spoke aluminum wheels and a chrome band up front, as part of the Bowtie brand's overall image.

Sci-fi movie Jinn features car designer, Firebird-bodied Camaro

Tue, 08 Apr 2014

If you're an automotive engineer being tormented by an immortal being made of fire, then wouldn't you think it best to have a custom coupe called the FireBreather for your getaway car? That's the FireBreather in the image above, adorned by the red wings that once fronted the Pontiac Firebird, running away from a black cloud of evil in a trailer for the movie Jinn.
The Jinn is eternal evil, always waiting for the chance to make things float across rooms before going on homicidal urban rampages. The FireBreather is a Gen-V Chevrolet Camaro - from the V6 to the ZL1 - that's been through Classic Design Concepts' extensive list of exterior and interior modifications, including entirely new front and rear fascias and side skirts, sway bars and springs, Pirelli P Zeroes and an available Edelbrock supercharger.
The movie - FireBreathing chase scenes and all - was shot in Monroe, Michigan. You can watch the trailer below, but since the FireBreather only get a couple of seconds on screen, you can find out more about it on Street Legal TV and its official site.
