DRY SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA CAR

Fuchs 15x6 deep replicas

How many short wheel base 911 cars have you seen for sale recently? Hardly any would be the answer, the reason is because short wheel base production numbers for 911 cars were very low, the 912 out sold the 911 by a huge margin. On top of the low numbers these early cars were prone to bad rust if they were not taken care of properly.  These factors led to very few of these cars left in existence. With good condition 1965-66 values reaching the $100k+ mark recently this may be your only chance to get into a short wheel base car for a reasonable cost.

This is a very nice project car and not a rusty hulk like many out there for sale. Currently registered with both of its original 1968 California black and yellow license plates. It is a dry southern California car with solid rockers, torsion tube area, front pan and body panels, only the floor pan has minimal rust issues. It has what I call California rust - bad seals let rain water in during the 10 days of rain we get in the year, the water sits in the middle of the floor pan under the rubber mat and rusts only the center of the floor. This one has it in the passenger rear pan (look at underside pictures). Do not confuse this with bad weather rust like the east coast cars - bad weather rust flings snow and salt throughout the body of the car causing rust everywhere and into the frame of the car. California rust does not effect the rockers/longitudinals or other areas that are difficult to repair. The floor pan in this car could be left as is for a simple driver car, it could be patched up with a repair patch, or a replacement floor pan could be fitted to the car for the ultimate fix. The front suspension pan has already been replaced in the past, the quality of the work was very good. I see no accident damage on this car other than the rear latch panel has been replaced, the quality of the work here is excellent and the new part fits perfectly. Gaps on this car are very good, all the hoods and doors fit very well with nice even gaps, the rear decklid is a little out of alignment but not bad. A few dents in the body, the hood is scraped. This car would be very easy to paint and any issues with body work would be normal and repaired during a normal paint job.

The engine is a 1969 911T engine with Webers. It runs and drives but needs work to make it a driver. The engine needs some tuning, at the moment it can drive on and off a transport vehicle but it is not suitable for freeway driving. Transmission and clutch work well. Brakes work well. Keep in mind you are buying a project car, if you can work on the car yourself then this will be easy to fix. If you need to take your car to a shop for everything then go buy a more reliable later model car or learn how to do it yourself.

The most common route for a car like this is a hotrod or custom built creation. A 911R replica would be very cool or build yourself a lightweight sports purpose car like the factory rally cars of the 1960s. Add a 2.7L engine, 915 transmission, some bigger brakes and you have a great hotrod that will outperform most cars. Of course a 1968 engine could easily be found and the car could be restored to its original glory in the awesome Golden Green color (see pictures for what that color looks like).

This is a project car, it is sold AS-IS where-is FOB 92084.

2015 Porsche Cayman GTS

Thu, 29 May 2014

The Porsche Boxster and Cayman will forever nip at the heels of their big brother, the 911 Carrera, and perpetuating this tradition are the latest GTS variants, which add yet another arrow to the quiver of the plucky mid-engined platform.
The GTS' performance enhancements boost horsepower by a mere 15 and shave a tenth from 0 to 60, but Porsche's clever product planners and engineers have stuck to their familiar formula in making the Cayman GTS more desirable than the Boxster for dyed-in-the-wool performance enthusiasts. More on that shortly.
Laps around Spain's Circuito Mallorca RennArena and the nearby Serra de Tramuntana mountain range would shed further light on how the GTS differentiates itself from lesser Caymans.

Porsche 918 Spyder pre-production version in all its almost-done glory

Sun, 18 Aug 2013

Porsche continues the long tease of its upcoming 918 Spyder, with the latest instantiation here at the Pebble Beach Concours, with the car presented in pre-production form to the throngs on the golf course.
Just a few days ago Porsche dropped an image of the car on its official Twitter feed. True to that leak, this 918 looks damn near what we expect the full customer version to be when it is officially debuted in Frankfurt. The neon-green brake calipers are items new to this version of the 918, and seem to be an identical color to those found on the Panamera S E-Hybrid.
When it shows up as a drivable piece, expect the Porsche supercar, with its gasoline-electric drivetrain, to be pretty insane. Horsepower in excess of 800 ponies will be available with a toe-tap, while the price of entry is expected to come within shouting distance of $850,000. A good deal for Porsche to bring the thing to Pebble then, where buyers with that kind of cash are think on the ground (and most likely wearing sherbet-colored trousers).

40+ cars that barely avoid the gas guzzler tax

Thu, 24 Jul 2014

The Gas Guzzler schedule, with mpg ratings and charges that haven't changed since 1991, lays out which fuel-swillers owe what to Uncle Sam.
I started thinking about the "Gas Guzzler Tax" - considerably less well known as The Energy Tax Act of 1978 - when I was driving Dodge's new Challenger SRT Hellcat last week. Unsurprisingly for a car that can burn 1.5 gallons of gas per minute at max tilt, theoretically able to empty a full tank of premium in about 13 minutes, the Hellcat will be subject to the Gas Guzzler Tax schedule when it goes on sale.
