Wow, where to start. This has been over a three year project for me and therefore I am sure I will be missing a great deal of information. Please contact me with any questions you might have and I can relay the story. In short, I purchased this car basically as a painted roller (engine was there, but weak). I have always wanted to do a Renegade and chose a Fat Performance Type IV for the power plant. Over $10k in the engine alone! I completely stripped the interior, cleaned and installed sound proofing throughout. RS lightweight carpet kit was then installed along with custom made door panels and interior panels. Seats were made custom for me by from Michael at Vintage Seats in black and houndstooth. Three point harnesses were also installed. I made the custom aluminum dash panels to eliminate all unnecessary items like radio, etc. and used an original leather wrapped Porsche steering wheel with great patina and custom batwing horn button. I could go on and on, but here is a condensed list:

  • Fat Performance 2.7 Type IV Engine with all the best internal components
  • 8 1/2 : 1 compression designed to run on pump gas (estimated 180 HP)
  • 911 Fan and Fan Housing with new Alternator and 911 style cooling shroud
  • Dual Weber Carburetors with Fat Performance 6” Air Cleaners and linkage
  • New Webcam camshaft and lifters
  • New Clutch, Pressure Plate and Throwout Bearing from Kennedy Engineering
  • New 215mm, 5 bolt pattern Flywheel
  • Rebuilt Porsche 901 5-Speed Gearbox
  • Custom Aluminum Machined Engine Support Bar from The Dub Shop
  • New High Torque Starter
  • Custom Type IV Ceramic Coated S&S Header
  • Custom fabricated stainless exhaust with Porsche sport muffler
  • New Custom Earls Oil Coolers setup with new stainless braided hoses/fittings
  • New MSD Ignition, Beru coils, plug wires, etc.
  • Elephant Racing PolyBronze Bearings
  • New Bilstein shock inserts with Boge Struts
  • New tie rods, rubber bushings, etc.
  • Weltmeister strut brace
  • New Hood, Door, Engine Lid, Front and Rear Glass seals
  • Freshly Rebuilt Brake Calipers
  • New Braided Stainless Brake Lines
  • All new interior including RS Perlon Felt Carpet, Custom Door Panels, Custom Dash, Headliner, etc.
  • Original leather wrapped Porsche VDM steering wheel with brush finished Batwing Horn Button
  • New black with houndstooth inserts RS Seats from Vintage Seats
  • 3 Point Racing Harness
  • North Hollywood Speedometer restored gauges
  • Freshly Rebuilt Pedal Cluster
  • 15 x 6 Fuchs Wheels with new GoodYear 195/65 Eagle GT Tires
Text or call me at 678-896-6798 and I can send you a link of the car running.

I am forgetting so much more than I have listed, so contact me with any questions you might have regarding this extremely fun and full of torque Renegade 912. The only other two items that should be noted is the cooling engine tin needs to be completed (I have the rear portion done, but planned to seal off the entire engine compartment), and the passenger side door was apparently painted at a different time than the car and is a shade off.

Sorry, the custom leather tool kit pictured is not included as it goes to another car.

Hyundai, Porsche top J.D. Power APEAL study

Wed, 23 Jul 2014

Just as they did in the Initial Quality Study, Porsche and Hyundai have taken the premium and non-premium crown, respectively, for the 2014 J.D. Power APEAL study. This is the tenth consecutive year for that Porsche has been rated the best premium make in the APEAL study, which attempts to figure out how pleased owners are with their purchases. For 2014, it asked 86,000 owners of MY2014 cars to rate their vehicles in 77 different categories 90 days after their initial purchase. The resulting figures were plugged in deliver the APEAL score, which is rated on a 1,000-point scale.
The industry average sits at 794 points for 2014, although that's a one-percent decline over last year's rating. In this year's study, premium brands averaged 840 out of 1,000, while non-premium makes average 785. For their part, Porsche netted an impressive 882 points, while Hyundai earned an 804. Interestingly, only four non-premium brands (Hyundai, Ram, Volkswagen and Mini) finished above the industry average for 2014.
It's also interesting to see the clear delineation between premium and non-premium brands, with an eight-point gap between the non-premium champ, Hyundai, and the lowest-rated premium brand, Volvo.

Muffler Man gets racing suit to mark progress on Porsche Experience Center

Sat, 19 Oct 2013

In a dramatic change of careers, a fiberglass Muffler Man statue on the side of a busy Los Angeles freeway, formerly known as "Golf Guy," traded in his clubs for a Porsche driver's suit a couple days ago. It's no coincidence, as he's standing on land that the German automaker bought from the Dominguez Hills Golf Course a couple years ago to build its west coast Porsche Experience Center - which will be complete with a test track, restoration and maintenance facilities, a cafe and restaurant, a home for Porsche Motorsports North America and more, when it's finished in the fourth quarter of 2014.
The Porsche Muffler Man will serve as the gatekeeper to the 53-acre center and overlook the test track on the side of the 405 freeway. We can't think of a better job for a fiberglass giant that used to watch golf all day than to watch Porsche road cars and racecars getting wrung out on a test track in the middle of LA. Since Muffler Men are quite adaptable, we're sure this one will fit into his new role in no time - just as easily as he can double as Paul Bunyan.
Check out the press release below for more information on the Muffler Man and the experience center, which could be the ultimate adult playground when it's finished.

McQueen's Porsche 917 from Le Mans races to the auction block

Mon, 23 Jun 2014

Steve McQueen may have been the headline actor of the motorsport cult classic film Le Mans, but we all know who the real star was. Or rather, what: the Porsche 917. More specifically, it was the Gulf-liveried #22 - not McQueen's #21 - that won the race, making it one of the most iconic cars ever to drive across the silver screen. And now it's going up for auction.
This 1969 Porsche 917K, chassis 917-024, has a storied history both on and off the screen, even if it didn't win any (off-screen) races of note. This example was the first 917 to be campaigned in an actual race when Porsche handed it to Jo Siffert to drive against the Ferrari 312P and Ford GT40 at the Spa-Francorchamps 1000 Km race in 1969. Siffert found the early example too unstable and ultimately drove an earlier 908 to the checkered flag, but after 917-024 set the fastest time at the following year's Le Mans test day, Siffert acquired it outright.
The Swiss racing driver loaned the car to Solar Productions for use in the film, after which it returned to Siffert's collection until he was killed in an F1 exposition race at Brands Hatch in 1971. In a testament to how much he loved the car, it was 917-024 that lead the funeral procession. The car subsequently fell off the radar until it resurfaced in 2001 as one of the greatest barn finds of the new millennium. Now fully restored and resplendent in its original baby blue and orange, 917-024 is headed to the auction block at Pebble Beach where you can be sure that Gooding & Company will bring in a suitably high price for arguably the most iconic example of one of the most iconic Porsches of all time.
