Up for auction is a nice 1970 Porsche 914-6. It has had one respray from new in the original color of metallic green. The paint looks very nice, but there is some "solvent pop on the hood & the headlight doors. It isn't super noticeable and I tried to photograph it but I want to be clear that the paint likely looks a little better in photos than in person. There is also a ding in the passenger door & another small one on the cowl. Both are pictured. The floors have some rust in them but no major holes. Yet. There is a small dent in the front bumper (pictured). The rest of the car is VERY solid. It was painted about 20 years ago, so if anything was going to show up, I think it would have by now. It runs, drives, shifts & stops very nicely. I didn't drive it a lot, but to me, this car is WAY more fun than a 911 especially with the top off. The former owner was a PCA auto-x enthusiast so he put a sport exhaust & weltmeister sway bars on it and lowered it a bit. Other than that it is original. I have the COA and the numbers match. It also comes with the original service book, handbook and window sticker. This car is not a restored trailer queen, but it does present itself very nicely and it is a great driver that you can enjoy while it appreciates in value. I am thinning the herd while I am waist deep in the restoration of my 59 356 cab. I have tried to represent this car as accurately as I can through my description and photos. Email any questions and happy bidding.

Please do not email me asking to buy the car offline. The auction will run it's course & the reserve is very realistic, so bid to win. It is a very good car at a fair price. Thank you.

The odometer reads 79k & I believe this to be correct although I can't swear that it is but the car is too nice for it to be 179k. The motor & trans were rebuilt by Mike Bruns who is a very well known guy here in Florida. I have been trying to reach him & the prior owner. I do not know the mileage since the rebuild or the specs, but the motor / trans are still clean, do not leak or smoke & function very well. The engine performs better than I would expect a 110hp motor to, so I suspect that it might have some head work &/ or cams. But, again, I make no promises. I expect to have firm answers to this before the close of auction. I posted some additional photos of the top of the engine (what you can see of it) and the original books & window sticker & keys. They are in the original Porsche+Audi pouch (not pictured).

Ebay is going through some sort of maintenance issues according to their bulletin board & will not let me upload any photos. I will get the additional photos up ASAP. Thanks.

On Feb-10-13 at 11:10:57 PST, seller added the following information:

Ebay is still having technical issues that prevent me from adding photos. I forgot that there is a fairly complete tool kit. The engine # is 6405550.

Conquest and controversy conclude the 2014 Rolex 24 at Daytona [spoilers]

Sun, 26 Jan 2014

If you don't wish to know who won the 2014 Rolex 24 at Daytona, you should avert your eyes right now. We'll even give you a double-space to skedaddle...
For those of you still with us, the first race in the United SportsCar Championship (USCC) is done, but the discussions about it certainly won't end for a while. Daytona Prototypes claimed the first four overall places, the top spot taken by the No. 5 Action Express Coyote-Chevrolet Corvette DP driven by Joao Barbosa, Christian Fittipaldi, Sebastien Bourdain and Burt Friselle. The 16th and final caution of the race bunched the field up for an eight-minute sprint to the flag, so the first place getter finished just 1.4 seconds ahead of the No. 10 Wayne Taylor Racing Dallara-Chevrolet Corvette DP driven by Max Angelelli. Third place went to Brian Friselle in the No. 9 Action Express Chevrolet Corvette DP, 20 seconds down. Chevrolet power hasn't taken the overall win since 2003, eleven years later it scores a one-two-three-four. The No. 6 Muscle Milk/Pickett Racing ORECA-Nissan 03 scored fifth place, the top LMP2 finisher.
The Prototype Challenge class win went to the No. 54 CORE Autosport team of Colin Braun, Jon Bennett, Mark Wilkins and James Gue.

Porsche 959 Prototype started it all

Wed, 11 Sep 2013

While Porsche was unveiling the new Nürburgring-dominating 918 Spyder downstairs in Hall 3 here at the Frankfurt Messe, there was another Porsche supercar quietly and discretely on display upstairs in the same hall. That, of course, was the 959. But not just any 959: this was the original Gruppe B prototype.
The 959 was first developed as a rally car in the early 80s to compete with the likes of the original Audi Sport Quattro S1, Ford RS200 and Lancia Delta S4. But Zuffenhausen soon saw its potential as a production road-going supercar, emerging as a technological marvel to challenge the decidedly linear approach of the Ferrari F40. It still stands as a groundbreaking supercar in its own right, but also lead to the first all-wheel-drive 911 Turbo and set the stage for the Carrera GT and aforementioned 918 Spyder that followed to cap the top of the evolving Porsche range.
This original Gruppe B prototype, which presaged the production 959, packed a 450-horsepower 2.8-liter twin-turbo flat-six into an even sleeker form than the final version that followed. We caught up with it on display as part of a display of 80s German classics, of which this 959 prototype immediately stood out as the pick of the proverbial litter. Check out the hotness in the high-resolution image gallery above.

Watch onboard video of the Porsche 918 Spyder's record 'Ring lap

Tue, 10 Sep 2013

"Pics or it didn't happen!" You could almost hear the Internet shouting this when news started to trickle in about a sub-seven-minute Nürburgring lap by the new Porsche 918 Spyder. Well, after an official press release, which we ran earlier today, we have your "pics." Moving pics, to be more exact. Porsche has released on-board footage of the 6:57 lap.
The video, which runs about eight-and-a-half minutes, and shows the 918 from inside the car on a flying lap of the German track. Perhaps what's remarkable is just how undramatic it all looks. Sure, there's some sawing at the wheel from test driver Marc Lieb (one of three testers, including legendary rally king Walter Röhrl), but he makes wrangling the Martini-liveried 918 look kind of easy.
Take a look down below for the full, on-board video, and then click over and read our initial write-up from earlier this morning and take a glance at the more stylized video that Porsche originally posted.
