Up for sale is my 1974 Porsche 914.  I have been using this as a summer daily driver for the last 2 years.

57,308 Actual original mileage

It has been a great car for me, here are some of the things that set it apart

It includes a lot of the original paperwork and maintenance records including the original window sticker and bill of sale.

With the exception of the very rare Shelby Diamondback wheels this car appears in the exact configuration as it would have the day it was new

-No aftermarket "PORSCHE" on the back of the trunk

-No Porsche emblem added to the front trunk

-Vinyl sails on the side of the top are still in place

-No dash cover, seat cover, or aftermarket floor mats installed

-No aftermarket stereo

-Vehicle color is same as the original.

I'm selling this because I love working on cars and modifying them but this car is just too nice and unmolested 914s are far too rare for me to start modifying it.

This vehicle has been proven reliable on both short and long distance drives.

History

This is the history of the vehicle to the best of my knowledge.

This vehicle has been in the Des Moines area since it was purchased new.  It was owned by an older gentleman and was not driven much and was later given to his son.   His son drove it for a few years and parked it after it broke down.  Many years later it was purchased by my boss who soon realized he didn't have enough time to work on the car and he ended up selling it to me.  I have spent the last 2 years taking care of it and getting it back into the great running condition that it is in today.

Vehicle condition

Exterior

All glass is free of defect

Car was repainted at some point.  Color is the same as the original.  It has a few small rust bubbles and chips.

Body is very straight, nothing is dented or twisted.  rear trunk has slight crease near right hinge.

One headlight doesn't go up and down like it should, they can be operated manually, I just leave them up usually.

Tires

Tires are great, tread depth is getting low but otherwise they work great.  No slow leaks or cracks or anything.

Wheels

Wheels are very rare Shelby diamondback wheels.  I have never seen another 914 with these and they look awesome.  I believe they are aluminum.

The original spare tire and two of the original steel wheels are included.

Engine

Engine runs great.  Starts up every time.  I've never had the vapor lock issue that some have had.  Does not smoke, does not leak any oil.

Recently replaced all push rod tube seals along with valve cover gaskets.

All normal tune up items have been done recently, spark plugs and wires, air filter, dist. cap, timing adjusted.

Distributor has been converted from points to electronic timing.  This is hidden under the distributor cap so it retains stock appearance.

Exhaust is in good shape.  Brand new Sebring exhaust was installed in last fall 2013.

New Terry cable throttle cable in 2013

Transmission

901 side shift transmission, works great.  Recently replaced the rear shifter bushings

Brakes

4 wheel disc brakes all work great, the pads appear to have plenty of life but squeak a bit during low speed braking

Rotors are smooth and free of grooves.

Calipers all operate as intended

Parking brake works great

Electrical

The battery was replaced 1-2 years ago.  Battery may run down if car is not driven for more than a week or so.  Everything works  except the headlight motors as mentioned above.

All gauges work including back lighting.  The voltmeter fluctuates and the tachometer floats around a bit but this is normal for these cars.

The 8-track player/am/fm works sporadically on the one speaker, the other speaker is deteriorated.

Wipers work great

Horn does not function.

Suspension

Front - replaced shocks last year, adjusted wheel bearings and ride height.  Aftermarket front sway bar is included (not installed)

Rear - replaced sagging stock springs with 140# Weltmeister springs.  Aftermarket rear sway bar installed.

Interior

Brown leather seats look perfect, no tears.

Dash is perfect, no cracks or tears.

Original carpet and floor mats look great.

This car has no heat, the heat exchangers were too far gone to repair so they have been disconnected, the front defroster does blow outside air though.

The targa top is in great shape, it easily removes and stores in the rear trunk when not in use.

Singer 911 gorgeousness explored and experienced by Chris Harris

Thu, 17 Jan 2013

Few things get us as cranked up as a Porsche 911. Generation after generation, this rear-engined oddity has exhilarated our senses, and the new 991 is the most capable iteration yet. Even so, there's a lot to be said for the older models, from their lighter weights and more modest dimensions to their air-cooled thrums.
That elemental vintage Porsche appeal hasn't been lost on Los Angeles-based Singer Vehicle Design, which has endeavored to take the best bits from every generation of 911 and combine them into one impossibly sexy rear-engined machine. Based on a 964 donor car, we knew that a lot of work would need to go into everything from the structure to the bodywork to realize the Singer's cohesive aesthetic and dynamic vision, but we didn't know just how much until we watched this Drive video featuring Chris Harris. The auto journo gets time with the 350-horsepower, Cosworth-motivated coupe on both mountain passes and at the track, but what could be the most interesting thing about the 27-minute-long video is his in-depth plant tour.
Check it out by scrolling below, but not before paging through our new Singer 911 gallery.

Chris Harris condemns demonization of Porsche Carrera GT in wake of Walker death

Fri, 06 Dec 2013

When something bad happens, it's easy to resort to scapegoating. At least for some of us, that seems to be exactly what has happened following the tragic death of actor Paul Walker and racer Roger Rodas, who were killed on November 30 in a Porsche Carrera GT. Even though officials have not yet determined the cause of the crash, that isn't stopping many theories from being put for - theories that include blaming the Porsche supercar. Rather predictably, not only is the CGT's difficult nature getting examined, but indeed, the nature of all high-performance cars is being put under the public's microscope, with some wondering what the need for all the power is.
A Google search of "Porsche Carrera GT" will find no shortage of articles about the razor-sharp handling and outright speed of the CGT. Pistonheads' Chris Harris has a different, insightful take on both the Carrera GT and the nature of all fast cars. He reflects on the matter, ironically, en route to drive the successor to the car that killed Walker and Rodas, the 900-horsepower 918 Spyder hybrid supercar.
We think it's well worth a read, as it makes a number of good points about modern high-performance automobiles and the way they're used. Click over and take a look.

Roger Rodas' widow suing Porsche over Carrera GT crash

Tue, 13 May 2014

Investigations undertaken by local law enforcement may have vindicated Porsche from any wrongdoing in the crash that killed actor Paul Walker and racing driver Roger Rodas last year, but the latter's widow is apparently not convinced. According to emerging reports, Kristine Rodas has filed a lawsuit seeking unspecified damages from Porsche Cars North America.
In her suit filed with the Los Angeles Superior Court, Rodas' attorney Mark Geragos reportedly disputes the findings of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, which asserted that the vehicle was traveling at an unsafe speed of 90 miles per hour on city streets, identifying the speed as the cause of the accident. Instead the lawsuit claims that the vehicle was only going 55 mph and that the cause of the crash was improper equipment - namely a faulty right rear suspension and the lack of a crash cage and proper fuel tank.
