This may be a long read but this car has a story. This vehicle is a result of a ground-up restoration by a 82-year-old man which I met  by chance back in March. He had two 914 cars in his garage and were not even for sale. One was a 99% complete restoration and the other was no more than a shell with a wiring harness and suspension. I bought them both after some conversation  along with 2 additional motors and 3 additional trannys. There were also 20 boxes of parts to complete the shell. The stripped car and parts have been sold. This car for sale took about four years for him to restore. His reason for selling was the death of his wife and he was in failing health. I installed the distributor after purchasing the car consequently he has yet to hear this car run. This vehicle has a rebuilt motor with about 50 miles on it so far. There is limited paperwork. Motor runs strong with no smoke. Motor was rebuilt over a year ago but just recently started.  I have noticed an oil drip on the ground, but it is minor.  Five-speed transmission works flawlessly. All syncros work well. Vehicle shifts easily. Transmission is a side shift. I do not know if the transmission has been rebuilt however it does perform that way. I can ask. Previous owner welded gusset reinforcements at the suspension mounting points giving the car greater integrity. Vehicle is rust free with one exception in the photos.  Both doors open and close like your refrigerator. Vehicle has new tires.  Vehicle does need weather strips. All lights work as they should. All gauges work as they should. Since purchasing I have installed electronic ignition, new clutch cable, new battery, dist.,  plugs, wires, rotor, new Weber carb. and intake manifolds. Automatic choke works.  All sheet-metal is amazingly straight. (I have 30 yrs in body shops) Vehicle has a matte yellow finish, not quite a Semi-gloss but not a full gloss. Both trunk floors have original silver paint. All door jams, hood and trunk jams match the exterior. Interior is in very good condition. There are no creaks or rattles when driving this car. All suspension is tight. Steering is tight. Vehicle literally drives like a new car. The odometer is in the 60's and that could be true but I cannot say. The clutch pedal does not show excessive wear leading me to believe it is accurate. Odometer works. I have owned the car six months however it just hit the streets this week hence the 50 miles on the motor. Not knowing what to expect I have been more than pleasantly surprised now that I have driven this vehicle. The great state of North Carolina does not want me to drive on their roads for one year. This car does not need to sit.  I would not be selling the car otherwise. This vehicle is easily a $7500.00 car however I am listing with no reserve. Feel free to ask questions as I am in contact with the restorer.

Porsche 918 Spyder configurator goes live

Fri, 13 Sep 2013

That didn't take long. The debut model of the new Porsche 918 Spyder is still thronged by onlookers at the Frankfurt Motor Show, while the German sports car maker is hard at work putting the first version of the supercar's configuration page online. Considering Porsche configurators are some of our favorite time-wasters of the genre, we expect car-guy productivity to drop by a few percentage points over the rest of the day.
So, the 918 dream-maker doesn't list and prices as yet, and that's too bad. But considering the car is due to start off at $845,000 in the US, chances are good that unless you're reading this from the shallow end of your Uncle Scrooge-spec money pool, the cost of any part of the 918 is academic to you anyway.
To start, Porsche is offering twelve paint colors, three wheel choices and seven two-tone interior treatments. Standard lightweight bucket seats and a set of chairs with "firmer padding" are on offer, too. The options list is mostly populated with interior bits, though many - an anti-reflection interior, fire extinguisher, six-point seatbelts - are racing-oriented or functional. Note that Porsche is also kind enough to offer just one cupholder as an optional extra; the unit is made of aluminum and is detachable so that you won't have to carry the extra weight during racing. Also, Porsche probably puts you on some kind of naughty 'list' if you order one...

Singer 911 gorgeousness explored and experienced by Chris Harris

Thu, 17 Jan 2013

Few things get us as cranked up as a Porsche 911. Generation after generation, this rear-engined oddity has exhilarated our senses, and the new 991 is the most capable iteration yet. Even so, there's a lot to be said for the older models, from their lighter weights and more modest dimensions to their air-cooled thrums.
That elemental vintage Porsche appeal hasn't been lost on Los Angeles-based Singer Vehicle Design, which has endeavored to take the best bits from every generation of 911 and combine them into one impossibly sexy rear-engined machine. Based on a 964 donor car, we knew that a lot of work would need to go into everything from the structure to the bodywork to realize the Singer's cohesive aesthetic and dynamic vision, but we didn't know just how much until we watched this Drive video featuring Chris Harris. The auto journo gets time with the 350-horsepower, Cosworth-motivated coupe on both mountain passes and at the track, but what could be the most interesting thing about the 27-minute-long video is his in-depth plant tour.
Check it out by scrolling below, but not before paging through our new Singer 911 gallery.

Evo pits BMW M3 against Porsche Macan in drag battle

Sun, 24 Aug 2014

If you want to move five passengers in very rapid fashion and you've got a $75,000 budget, two newly introduced four-door models immediately come to mind - both are the highest performing vehicles in their respective segments. But which is faster off the line, to the 60-mile-per-hour benchmark or flat-out over an even longer run? Evo took both to paved aircraft runway to find out.
In lane one we've got the all-new Porsche Macan Turbo, which boasts a twin-turbocharged, 3.6-liter V6 rated at 400 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque. The Porsche is fitted with a seven-speed, dual-clutch gearbox, and the 4,244-pound crossover has the traction advantage of standard all-wheel drive. In lane two is the all-new BMW M3, powered by a twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six rated at 425 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque. It is also equipped with a seven-speed, dual-clutch gearbox, but only the rear wheels of the 3,595-pound sedan are driven. Both the BMW and Porsche arrive with launch control, which helps to remove driver error off the line.
Which automaker's launch control system is better off the line? Does all-wheel-drive grip give the crossover the advantage it needs to overcome its adversary's power-to-weight advantage? Will aerodynamics factor into the results? Which would you put in your garage, and why? The video may surprise you.
