This is the original year 928, in the often seen poster color Minerva Blue, and in marvelous condition.  It's been in the family since 1984 - almost 30 years now.  I am told the VIN number indicates that it was the 605th off the line on April 26th, 1978.  Always garaged and covered during our ownership, "blue car" has been driven fewer than 1200 miles in the last 10 years, fewer than 500 in the last 5.  One of our 3 autos it has in essence been only a "weekend car" during its life with us.  The total mileage, 132,414  is of course original.  It sits in the garage, being trickle charged, waiting for its "exercise" every couple of weeks.  Since I turn 80 shortly, it's time for a younger person to enjoy driving it, showing it, and give it new life on the road!

I think you can see from the photos that it is in very good condition, inside and out.   If you want to see "full screen" photos just let me know and I'll email them to you - greater detail is likely visible.
I can detail, and will, the less than perfect condition features from an appearance point of view.  I am not well-versed as a "car person", or mechanically adept enough to accurately detail the operating condition, so I will refer you to Tony Di Piero, owner of C T Automotive, "The Porche Professionals", formerly Carrera Tech Inc., of Campbell, CA, who can fill you in on its mechanical and operating condition.  What I can tell you is that the car has always been kept in a good, safe, drivable condition by those Porche specialists, with more "invested" in its upkeep, maintenance and repair than was spent on the purchase price!  I have all of the service and  maintenance records performed during our ownership - over 50 - so that the buyer can see its history and the care of the vehicle.

During my last smog and service visit, Tony indicated that "it could use a new clutch and muffler", but all seems quite fine to me as I drive around the neighborhood and nearby freeway.  As mentioned before, I drive it every couple of weeks to keep all systems functional, and they are.  Tony Di Piero can be reached through his CT Automotive site, or at 408-377-3885 if you wish to speak with him.  The "less than perfect" appearance items are as follows.  1) Cord "piping" on driver's seat slightly worn at the bottom.  2) Black vinyl cover on leather covered steering wheel,  3) Tan dashboard leather pulled away slightly from AC ports: custom cover placed on top of dash, 4) Newer tires with less than 500 miles on them, and 5) New Minerva Blue paint repainted about 9 years ago - minor "road dings" at front of auto.  I think that's it.

I believe this is a California car, sold here originally and in our family since 1984.  I don't believe it has ever been in the rain, and certainly not in snow or salted streets.  We live in the San Francisco bay area - a very moderate climate and one in which rust and chemical insult are not problematic to automobiles.

An "extra" - a California buyer will receive an added bonus of my releasing and reassigning my California license plate - "928" - the only one of its kind in California.  The car and its plate always attract attention at the stoplight or parking lot.  This 35 year old auto will of course be sold without warranty, in "as-is" condition, with terms as mentioned elsewhere.  "Blue car" will be either delivered or shipped to Buyer and "Pink slip" / clear Title presented as good funds are accepted and deposited to my Wells Fargo bank account.

Will Roegge makes 4K art of Jeff Zwart's 911 build and run up Pikes Peak

Sun, 17 Aug 2014

Will Roegge has turned his camera on Jeff Zwart and provided another gem, this time documenting Zwart's run up Pikes Peak and BBI Autosport. Bertim Besha dropped out of high school, then worked his way up to founding his own shop, BBI, that gathers a crew of tuners who are just as fastidious about their work as the customers are about their cars.
They prepped the 991-series Porsche 911 GT3 Cup Turbo, the product of combining a 911 GT2 that was the most powerful car Zwart drove up the mountain with a GT3 Cup that Zwart thought had the best handling. Two TiAL turbos and a lot of fettling make for a 3.8-liter flat-six with 700 horsepower, 700 pound-feet of torque and a 7,800-rpm redline. Zwart drove it to a heartbreaking second place this year, finishing less than 1.2 seconds behind the Time Attack 1 class winner when his car suffered its first mechanical issue of the week.
The first video below covers Besha, BBI and the build, the second is Zwart's run. As if the visuals weren't enough, sit back and enjoy the shrieking of the "Hill Climb Special," which is what the constellation Sirius would sound like if it could bark.

Leno buys classic Porsche 356 Carrera 2, seeks out and finds perfect expert for help

Mon, 19 Aug 2013

The world of collector cars is fairly tight-knit when you get down to individual models. Need proof? Just take a look at this latest video from Jay Leno's Garage. The subject is a gorgeous 1963 Porsche 356 Carrera 2. Jay, being known as quite a collector, got a call from someone looking to sell. While doing his due diligence and looking for a 356 expert to go over the car with him, he came across John Willhoit.
Where the story gets weird is when Leno is asked the license plate number - it turns out that Willhoit, owner of Willhoit Restorations, had restored the exact same car more than 30 years prior. He then sold it to the same person that was looking to give it to Leno. What follows is a truly interesting video on the little quirks of the 356, along with Willhoit's personal history on a car he hadn't seen since 1976.
This is a bit more mechanically detailed than Leno's normal videos, but it's on a very interesting subject. Take a look below for the entire film.

Porsche Macan fails moose test, Stuttgart responds

Tue, 14 Oct 2014

Different countries have different safety standards, but most of them revolve around a similar set of tests: front impact, side impact, offset impact, rollover... the usual. But Sweden has its own test. It's called the Moose Test (or the Elk Test), and it's unique to Scandinavia: a car has to be able to avoid a theoretical antlered mammal on the road while traveling at 43.5 miles per hour and return to its previous course without flipping over. The Jeep Grand Cherokee ran afoul of the uniquely Nordic maneuver a couple of years ago, but even more surprising is the way the Porsche Macan has reacted.
Under testing by Sweden's Teknikens Värld, Porsche's downsized crossover - specifically the Macan S Diesel, for what it's worth - didn't flip over, but it skidded off course. In real-world conditions, it follows, the vehicle could run off the road or into oncoming traffic. The testers ran the test several times, and even removed excess weight from the vehicle, and each time it reacted the same way.
In response, Porsche has explained that the behavior is the result of its Active Rollover Protection system kicking in. When the system detects that the vehicle could drastically oversteer, flip over or lose its tire, it momentarily applies the brake on the front outside wheel, allowing the vehicle to shed the cornering forces without losing it completely.
