1974 Saab Sonett on 2040-cars

Diamond in the rough. I'm not sure, I don't know Sonett's that well, but the nose has been modified to be full tilt, and the pop up headlights eliminated. Kinda sweet really. Also both bumpers removed and body filled.

You could certainly start with worse but make no mistake this car is in somewhat rough condition. There are several places on the body where previous repairs are evident, and just places where the gel is bubbled for some reason or another, like on the front hood where there is a seam running the full width of the car. The rivets are now bubbling under the fiberglass. Maybe that was part of the mods to make it a one piece tilt nose, not sure.

Rust in pan and particularly the passenger side rocker.

Interior tolerable, but both door panels need some refurbishing, passenger seat has a few tears. Carpet must have been replaced. Headliner is falling down but not torn up. Dash pretty decent, gauges look pretty good.

This car has been sitting for a number of years. The brakes and clutch are frozen. Currently the passenger front wheel is stuck, I'll try to free it up. Exhaust was rusty and got ripped off winching the car up onto my trailer (whoops). It was pretty much trashed anyways.

I put a battery in, hooked the engine up to a remote fuel tank, and it fired up immediately. Sounded pretty good, but loud with just an open pipe, settled into a smooth idle. Seemed to rev just fine. I only ran it a few minutes, while there is some antifreeze in the header tank, not sure if the engine is full, probably is.  Oil pressure light and the alternator light both go out immediately upon firing up. Turn lights work, interior light works, wipers work, radio works, no gas light works, gauges in general seem to work. I did not get the blower or headlights to work. Brake pedal frozen so I can't say if the brake lights work. The added on gauges seem to work. Oil pressure showed 30-40psi, vacuum gauge moved appropriately. Temp gauge did not move, but as I said, I did not run it long.

    Tires hold air.

Windshield has crack in lower left corner. Other glass is good, door glass crank up and down.

If I wasn't tripping over cars all ready I'd fix the hydraulics and drive as is (also with a muffler). I'm not saying everything else is 100%, but it does seem doable.

Have a good look at the pictures, I can get more.

Thanks for looking. What you see is what you get.

Saab owner may speed up relaunch with gas-powered 9-3

Wed, 21 Nov 2012

National Electric Vehicle Sweden, the new owner of Saab, has good news for you if you happened to miss out on picking up a 9-3 before the company plummeted through bankruptcy. Automotive News Europe reports NEVS may offer a gasoline-powered 9-3 in 2013. That move would effectively step up the brand's re-launch plan by a full year. Originally, the company planned to introduce an electric vehicle in 2014, but NEVS is currently investigating ways to start production next summer using "a 9-3 with a traditional powertrain" in order to generate more cash for the electrification effort.
NEVS purchased Saab earlier this year with the intent of resurrecting the brand with a fully electric product portfolio. The new EVs would theoretically ride on the Saab Phoenix platform and be manufactured at the automaker's plant in Trollhattan, Sweden. The report of a resurrected gasoline model came courtesy of Mikael Oestlund, a company spokesperson familiar with the company's workings.

Mahindra eying stake in Saab owner NEVS?

Tue, 17 Jun 2014

It's ironic that Saab's current vehicle architecture is called the Phoenix platform, because like the mythological bird, the company keeps returning from the ashes. That's right, the embattled Swedish automaker isn't completely dead yet. Again. Actually, it may be facing yet another buyout, and this time, the buyer may be from India.
Less than a month ago, the situation looked ominous for Saab. National Electric Vehicle Sweden, the carmaker's current owner, temporarily shut down 9-3 production at its Trollhättan factory not long after restarting it in the first place. According to Just Auto, it laid off about 100 consultants allegedly linked to problems making June payroll, as well. At the time, Saab claimed that the measures were temporary, and it was negotiating selling part ownership to another automaker.
Those assertions might have some truth behind them, it seems. Indian newspaper The Economic Times reports that Mahindra & Mahindra and an unnamed Asian automaker are negotiating with NEVS to purchase part of the company. It claims that the Indian automaker sees Saab as an opportunity to add a premium brand to its business.

Vampire Weekend singer responds to burning Saab controversy [w/video]

Fri, 29 Mar 2013

Last week, we tipped you off about Vampire Weekend and their new music video for the song Diane Young, a short film that consists entirely of setting fire to two perfectly nice-looking Saab 900 automobiles. The indie rock band's video - viewable by scrolling down - predictably triggered the internet ire of classic car enthusiasts - Saabophiles in particular - and word of the unrest eventually got back to the band itself.
According to music site Spinner (nb: owned by Autoblog parent AOL), the group was "stunned" at the backlash - enough that lead singer Ezra Koenig felt compelled to respond himself. According to Koenig, the band was under the impression that their record company was "looking to purchase the cheapest, oldest cars possible; they weren't trying to buy a beautiful perfect condition car." By way of apology, Koenig even goes so far as to note that bandmate Rostam Batmanglij is a keen fan of Saab.
Other reports have claimed that the cars may have been purchased under false pretenses, sold by owners who "wanted to see them go to a nice new home," but Koenig takes issue with that characterization, countering that he understood that the cars had substantial electrical problems.
