1999 Subaru Impreza Outback Sport For Parts Or To Fix- Running And Complete on 2040-cars

Year:1999 Mileage:238000

Up for sale is a 1999 Subaru Impreza Outback Sport with 238,000 miles on it. It is a 5 speed manual, all wheel drive vehicle that is also the sport model, so it has the WRX hood with the hood scoop and also a roof rack.

Here's the story:

I bought this almost one year ago from the original owner with 184,000 miles on it. The owner had replaced the clutch (throwout bearing, pressure plate and 20lb flywheel), preformed a tune up and replaced the catilytic converter with all of the exhaust pipes back from it (about a $1,500 job, and happens to all Subaru's notoriously). The check engine light was on (and still is) but I got around it at the time of inspection (thank you shady auto shops) with a little bit of extra cash. The code was reading the cat code (P4020) and was told that when the new cat was put on, the wrong clamp was also put on, so some excess air was flowing through the cat, throwing the code. Again, the check engine light didn't bother me as it didn't affect performance, nor did it prevent me from getting it inspected.

Fast forward to now:

I've put almost 60k miles on it (current mileage: 238xxx) exclusively highway miles. I travel for work and all over the northeast, from here to Pittsburgh and to as far south as Baltimore. I have done normal maintainance to this vehicle, including doing oil changes every two weeks (that's right. every two weeks). I've done ball joints, transaxles, put new tires on this back in October (about 50% tread left) and have aligned the vehicle almost as frequently as I've gotten oil changes.

THE BAD:

Before I explain what's wrong, let me preface this by saying that this has been reliable up until a few days ago. I've never broken down in this, it has always brought me to where ever I've had to go, even as far away as Canada.

For the past few weeks, I've been getting some hesitation when I try to accelerate, especially coming from a full stop into first gear, say from a red light. So much hesitation, in fact, that the check engine light blinks. One it gets past the hesitation, it runs and drives normally.
I had the check engine light analyzed and found out that there is a misfire in cylinder #2 (P300 code). I did a full tune up, and the misfire is still occuring. I got a second opinion on the matter and on the same day, the car developed a rod knock. It knocks when you put your foot down and goes away at higher rpm. My mechanic says that the knock is probably crankshaft related and that a rod will throw sooner rather than later.
Upon hearing this news, I returned the coil pack (it was like $160 bucks) and drove it for 2 more days before parking it.

In conclusion, the car runs, but you will need to address the rod knock and the misfiring issue to continue driving it as it sits. I'm selling the car for parts, but you could (in theory) drive it for a while before it throws a rod. It could die today, it could die a year from now, who knows? It will also need front pads and it burns some oil in top gear, but thats to be expected for a car with 238xxx on it.

I have a clean title in my hand. The car still has plates on it, so if you want to come and drive it a little, drop me a message with your contact info and I'll get back to you. If there are any questions, feel free to ask me at any time.

SOLD AS-IS. NO RETURNS.

IIHS says these are the safest cars of 2013

Wed, 02 Jan 2013

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has revealed its annual list of Top Safety Picks, an award that highlights automobiles it says offer "superior crash protection." A new and still more significant award, the Top Safety Pick+ honor, is given to those vehicles that earn good ratings for occupant protection in four out of five areas of measure. And while some 117 vehicles were given the TSP seal of approval for 2013, just 13 passed muster for TSP+.
To be fair, IIHS only evaluated 29 vehicles with its new testing procedures for TSP+ (we'd expect that the number of qualified cars will rise substantially for 2014). Luxury and Near Luxury midsize cars were the first groups evaluated, followed by midsizers in the Moderately Priced Cars category - unsurprisingly, it's only midsize cars that you'll find among the class this year.
Only two luxury sedans made the list of 13 for 2013: the Acura TL and Volvo S60. The other 11 cars on the list included entries from domestic, Japanese and German car makers: Dodge Avenger, Chrysler 200, Ford Fusion, Honda Accord (sedan and coupe), Kia Optima (but not its close kin, the Hyundai Sonata, strangely), Nissan Altima, Subaru Legacy and Outback, Suzuki Kizashi and the Volkswagen Passat all made the grade.

2015 Subaru WRX

Mon, 16 Dec 2013

Every time I drive a Subaru WRX, I wish one of my parents had taken some weird, top-secret spy job that would have forced us to relocate to Finland when I was a kid. I could have learned the art of rally-style car control as a young lad, and in my adult life, sought out a dangerous/rewarding/awesome career as a professional WRC driver.
Never was that more clear than on the launch program for the new 2015 WRX, where Subaru pointed us down a long, somewhat treacherous stretch of road in the tree-lined mountains of northern California. Quick elevation changes were met with blind turns and washed-out shoulders, not to mention rogue bits of snow, ice and gravel that lined the apexes of nearly every turn. Here, I couldn't stop grinning, my co-driver and I switching between second and third gears, with precise steering inputs and judicious braking keeping us safely on the road and not plummeting nose-first into the trees. And the WRX simply devoured each inch of pavement with a ferocious poise that made me remember why I have loved this car so darn much.
But this sort of 100 Acre Wood perfection isn't the only way to experience Subaru's darling WRX. After a long stint of driving back down the California coast on Highway 1, I realized that Subaru's line about this being the best-driving WRX yet wasn't just a bunch of PR mumbo-jumbo. Of course, it isn't without a few compromises...

Subaru previews Levorg concept ahead of Tokyo reveal

Wed, 30 Oct 2013

When I was a kid I went with my family to a Subaru dealership. My brother, being clever as he is, pointed out that Subaru backwards spelled "you're a bus." The portly salesman was not amused, and we bought a Passat instead. Fast forward a couple of decades and we can't help but wonder if Subaru wasn't thinking the same thing when it named its new concept Levorg, which spells "grovel" backwards. The company itself says the name is a combination of the words "Legacy," "Revolution" and "Touring," but one way or another, that's what they're calling it, and here are the first preview images and details on the concept which Fuji Heavy will unveil at the Tokyo Motor Show this year.
Designed to combine the feel of a sports car with the practicality of a touring car, the Levorg looks set to preview the next step in a long line of performance-oriented Subaru wagons. It packs a 1.6-liter turbocharged boxer four and next-generation EyeSight technologies in what looks to be a svelte yet muscular form that could point the way forward for the next Legacy.
The Levorg, however, is not the only concept which Subaru will reveal in Tokyo this year. The Japanese automaker has also revealed plans to unveil the Cross Sport Design Concept (which could preview the replacement for the discontinued Tribeca), the Crossover 7 Concept (which looks like a taller version of the Legacy wagon with an apparent third row of seats), and an Evolution version of the Viziv concept presented in Geneva earlier this year. Scope them out in the gallery above and press release below.
