Dallas, Texas, United States

Description

Bought from neighbor 10 yrs ago, who bought it new from the dealership; always a Dallas car. Garage-kept, but I’m moving and downsizing, so garage is gone. “The Toy” must go too. Great for high schooler or college kid. Attention getter, conversation starter, chick magnet. Antique plates—exempt from TX emissions inspection. Collectible: NADA book value (“average retail” $4,425) rose twice during the past half year after being flat for 10 years. One of 900 converted by American Custom Coachworks in Beverly Hills, CA. Read history at http://howards.hubpages.com/hub/1981-Celica-Convertible

The basics: Celica, 2-dr, 2+2, 4-cyl 22R, 2-bbl carb, pwr steering, pwr brakes, frt disc brakes, 5-spd manual, RWD, live axle, compact spare, documentation. Conversion from new coupe to convertible w/ added frame stiffening.

Upgrades: Adjustable brake proportioning valve, braided stainless steel brake hoses, Addco sway bar, dead pedal, Kenwood stereo. Removed: CA smog controls, A/C, w/s washer. Mild customizing: Supra alloy rims, Recaro Supra seats (10-way driver w/ lumbar & 8-way pax), custom console, blacked-out chrome, deleted trim and emblems, front parking lights converted to Euro-look turn signals.

The good: Refurbished, repainted, reupholstered. Everything works—no rattles. Fresh: head job, water pump, thermostat, spark plugs & wires, radiator cored. Recent: battery, 5k mi on wide Bridgestone tires, master cylinder, belts, idler bearing, shifter bushings, end links, tie rod ends, pitman arm, U-joint, upholstery, top.

The bad: All convertibles leak in heavy rain (on the other hand, the windshield alone deflects a light sprinkle above 60 mph). Oil drip since last oil change (estimate 1 hr labor). Exhaust manifold gasket leak (estimate 3 hr labor)—just affects the sound. No A/C—it’s a convertible, duh!

Buyer is urged to make visual inspection because it’s 33 yrs old, 245k miles, rare and modified.

2013 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport

Tue, 16 Apr 2013

"Oh yeah, Toyota still makes the Tacoma." Admit it, that's what you just said to yourself. It's a perfectly natural reaction, but the Tacoma has been quietly anchoring its segment for years, outselling every other compact pickup without making too much of a fuss. Toyota hasn't neglected the Tacoma - it was updated in 2012 with a revised nose and interior as the most noteable changes.
In a world awash with high-value fullsize pickups all vying for your attention, the Tacoma still charms more than a few buyers out of their cash. I hooked a Tacoma for a week to see whether it still has enough to recommend it.

Toyota temporarily idles pair of Indian plants due to labor unrest

Thu, 20 Mar 2014

The Detroit News reported today that Toyota will restart production at two Indian plants, following a shutdown on Monday.
Factory labor, management and police in Asia engage in the kind of violent altercations that we're not used to, having almost entirely walked away from the overtly brutal relations epitomized by the Pinkerton Detective Agency and the Flint Sit-Down Strike. In India, a plant owned by a Ford transmission supplier plant was shut down in 2009 after incidents between workers and armed men around the same time as Ssangyong workers occupied a factory in South Korea, in 2012 Suzuki Maruti workers rioted over wages around the same time upset employees beat a ceramics factory president to death in retaliation for a labor leader's killing.
Toyota is the latest to company trying to avoid that road. The Detroit Free Press reported earlier this week that it shut down two plants in India after 11 months of acrimonious wage negotiations and arbitration have gone nowhere. Toyota said the plant workers in Bidadi, near Bangalore, had deliberately stopped production at times over the past 45 days and threatened management. The workers said they wanted their wages raised by an amount already agreed to by management, but that management had reneged; news reports weren't clear on the amount, some saying nearly 10,000 rupees ($165 US) more per month, another saying 4,000 rupees ($65 US), but reports agree that Toyota has said it will only go as high as 3,050 rupees ($50 US).

Toyota to sell hot-pink Crown in Japan

Sun, 11 Aug 2013

Akio Toyoda is doing a pretty decent job at the helm of the Toyota empire. This is the man, after all, that declared that Toyota would get new sports cars, and that they needed to be, not should be, rear-wheel drive. We can respect that. Toyoda is also trying to do away with his company's conservative styling and bring edgier vehicles to market.
Toyota's designers have done just that, although perhaps they went a bit too far. In November, Toyota debuted its fourteenth-generation Crown with a bling-bling fascia that makes Lexus' spindle grille look as conservative as a three-piece suit, and a retina-searing pink paintjob. See, in Japan, the Crown is to Japan's older crowd what the 2002 Buick Park Avenue is to America's senior citizens. As Automotive News reports, the idea with the pink was to draw attention to the grille, but it was originally intended as a debut item, only.
Now, Toyota is actually planning to offer the electric fuchsia Crown for sale to regular buyers. Interested parties will have from September 1st to September 30th to place an order for the big sedan. According to the AN report, Toyoda said to reporters at the debut, "My initial reaction was: 'You're kidding! Please, not pink." We wish they were kidding.
