Toyota Corolla Fx16 1988 With 4age/agelc 1.6 Dohc Engine on 2040-cars

We have for sale a 1988 Toyota Corolla FX16, without GTS trim, manual transmission, with 211,700 miles on the odometer. This is the last of a series of FXs that we've owned since 1992 and we've decided to take it off the road because of the body deterioration. Our local body shop said that it could pass inspection with some welding and shaped sheet metal for about $900. He also put it on a lift and confirmed that the uni-body frame itself was strong; there were a couple of weldable holes in the floor, about one inch wide but other than that all was good.

Obviously for basic transportation, the money is better invested in a newer vehicle.  Know, however, that this has been my everyday vehicle for the past decade and has been regularly maintained. Repairs were done as needed by a mechanic who specializes in Toyotas.

The engine is the standard FX16 AGELC 1.6 DOHC engine which has 80k- 90k miles on it, and was put in the car 40k- 50k miles ago. It's very strong although for the past few months it's been leaking a bit of oil. Our mechanic has diagnosed it as needing a valve cover gasket and an engine pan gasket.  (We didn't do that repair because it didn't make sense until we got the body evaluation for the annual inspection.)

The clutch and transmission are also in good shape.  The interior is OK, a couple of tears in the seat fabric, and it shows the general wear of its age. It also has the custom fit GTS front seats. (It will be sold without the radio/cd player unless someone wants to pay extra for it.)

This could be a project car or it could be purchased simply for the engine which is the same one that Toyota put in the MR2 of that era. To revive it, know that there are FXs on craigslist that have reasonable bodies and sell for $500- $1000. (They're obviously not available all the time but seem to come up every couple of months or so.)  For either purpose, know that the car in it's current condition is fully drive-able. We'll also include with the car a minor collection of FX parts that have accumulated over the years.

Although it doesn't make sense for us to revive it, we'd much prefer it went to someone who will appreciate it and allow it,  or its engine, to serve a new owner for many more years. There aren't very many of these left on the road and of those that remain, they deserve to go on as long as they can.

Please email us with any questions and we'll respond as soon as we can. Thanks.

Tesla now California's top automotive employer

Fri, 16 May 2014

Tesla has knocked off Toyota as the biggest auto employer in the state of California, employing over 6,000 people to the Japanese company's 5,300. That lead is only likely to grow, as the EV manufacturer prepares to add another 500 jobs by the end of the year, and as Toyota begins its relocation to its new North American headquarters in Texas. The news comes barely a week after the company announced a $50 million loss during the first quarter of 2014.
Tesla's statewide employment could be set to double, beyond even 6,500 people, if it follows through on rumors to construct its eagerly awaited gigafactory in the Golden State. The $5-billion venture could add another 6,500 employees, making Tesla not just the largest automotive employer in the state, but making it one of the largest employers in the state full stop.
The investment of Tesla and its founder (and real-life Tony Stark), Elon Musk, has been substantial. The company has added 3,000 employees in the state since 2013, reopening the Toyota and General Motors joint-venture factory that use to be known as NUMMI in 2009 and constructing a design studio in Los Angeles, all in addition to its Palo Alto headquarters.

Lexus, Mazda win KBB 5-Year Cost To Own Awards

Wed, 05 Feb 2014

We focus a lot on what new cars are like to drive, but it's difficult on a one-week loan to really get a sense of what a car is like to live with. Sure, we try to recreate that sense with our long-term vehicles, but even after a year, it's impossible to know fully learn about a car, particularly in terms of reliability and cost of repairs. For 2014 model year vehicles, Kelley Blue Book has put together a list of the most affordable vehicles over a five-year period.
At the tippy top of the list are Mazda and Lexus, with the Zoom-Zoom automaker winning the award for best non-luxury brand. Lexus, meanwhile, was the most affordable luxury marque over a five-year period. It's interesting to note, though, that not a single Mazda won its segment in this year's awards.
General Motors did quite well, taking eight segments, including both the subcompact and plug-in segments, with the gas-powered Chevrolet Spark and Spark EV. The Chevy Camaro SS and ZL1 took the high-performance car award. Toyota was well represented, with five winners split between the main brand (Corolla, Prius C and Tacoma) and Lexus (LS and RX).

New Toyota semiconductors could increase hybrid fuel efficiency by 10%

Wed, 21 May 2014

Toyota may have an ace up its sleeve in the fuel economy wars, as it's developed a new type of semiconductor that will allegedly help the company's hybrids net a ten-percent improvement in fuel economy.
The tech is still in development, although Toyota is already reporting five-percent gains during testing, six years before it plans to implement the new semiconductor in production vehicles, meaning the ten-percent improvement doesn't seem like an untenable goal. That is, until you hear from Kimimori Hamada, the project general manager of Toyota's electronics division.
"We are aiming for great improvement in fuel economy and miniaturization," Hamada told Automotive News. "This is a very challenging target."
