2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser with 3.0L, D-4D Toyota 1KD-FTV Turbo Diesel

Carfax Report <---LINK

For Sale:  2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser with 3.0L, D-4D Toyota 1KD-FTV Turbo Diesel engine (professionally converted at Diesel Toys in San Antonio, TX).  I planned to keep this rig until it died many years down the road, but life changed for me in a great way and so have my vehicle needs.

I purchased the FJ Cruiser a few months after I separated from my, now, ex-wife.  I always liked the FJs and she didn't.  After the divorce, I decided I would get one.  I was on orders with the Army National Guard in preparation for a deployment and the money was good.  I purchased the FJ and started planning everything I would do it.  I joined the FJ Cruiser Forums, got ideas from the community there, and started planning.

Shortly after I purchased the FJ, I decided saw a forum thread on diesel conversions.  I passed up a converted Ford Ranger in high school and to this day wish that had worked out.  I wanted the higher low-end torque, improved fuel economy, and, to be honest, I wanted something unique.  I wanted to turn people's heads.  Even though I enjoyed everything about it, I was going through my early-life crisis.  I am in a place where I can admit that now.

Below, you will see the stats and specs for the FJ.  It is by no means finished, but I have done quite a bit to start it.  Had I to do it all over again, I would have prioritized differently, but hindsight's 20/20.

Why I'm selling her:  The FJ was the personal project that got me through a tough time in my life.  It helped me focus on something other than my divorce, it helped fill my downtime while I was on the deployment, and it was fun.  I'm selling her because I'm in a better place now.  I met someone great.  I decided fairly quickly that I would rather spend my time and resources on her and on us than I would on what would be the next upgrade for the FJ.  I didn't think twice about buying her ring instead of buying a set of shocks.

I decided to sell the FJ because it is the right decision for us.  If I keep it, I would constantly look for the next upgrade (as any good FJ owner should do) and there are so many other things I would rather do.  We're planning our wedding, planning for our family, a house down the line, and our money is better spent on those goals.  Dave Ramsey might have influenced my decision just a little.

If you do the math it will not take you long to realize that you are getting an AMAZING deal on this FJ.  Add up the cost to purchase the FJ, all the mods, the diesel conversion (not the mention the fact that the Diesel Toys waiting list is over a year to get a vehicle in their shop and another 12 weeks for them to convert the engine), and the fact that you'll have an incredibly capable and reliable off-road worthy vehicle.

Mileage:
Current miles on the FJ Cruiser ~83,000 (still driving it)
Miles on the diesel powertrain before conversion ~28,014
Miles driven since conversion ~ 5,000

The Engine:
This FJ Cruiser has a 3.0L, D-4D Toyota 1KD-FTV Turbo Diesel engine, Installed by Diesel Toys, San Antonio, TX.  The D-4D came out of a 2008 Toyota Hilux KUN26R (Diesel Toys Conversion Photos)

The Other Mods:
- Body Mount Chop - Diesel Toys chopped while it was in their shop.
- Heavy Duty Rubberized Undercoating - Diesel Toys applied while it was in their shop.
- Expedition One Rear Bumper with Smooth Motion Tire Carrier System (Exp-One Rear)
- Metal Tech 4X4 Step Sliders (MT Step Sliders)
- Total Chaos Uniball UCA, Powder Coated Black (TC UCA)
- Toy Outfitters Upper and Lower Rear Control Arms (Toy Outfitters UCAs)
- Method Race Wheels Truck Beadlock Custom Powder Coated Finish (Beadlocks)
- 285/70R17 Nitto Trail Grappler M/T (Nitto Trail Grappler) - These tires rub at full turn.  We put them on and I drove it for a few days with no rub.  I took it into the local Toyota dealership in Norman and had them align it.  It only started to rub after they aligned it.  I took it back the next day and they said I would need to pay them to fix what they messed up, so I left it.  If you plan to lift it properly, you should be golden! (You can see where it rubs in one of the photos below)
- Black Trail Teams Mirrors (Black Mirrors)
- Black Door Handles and Covers (Black Handles)
- Black Trail Teams Edition Grill (Black Grill)
- 3" Spacer in the front -  I think they're Revtek (a great friend picked them up for me…when I picked the ring over the shocks).
- LoJack vehicle theft recovery system.

Timeline:
- January 2011: Purchased from Bob Howard Toyota, Edmond, OK.  Later that month I contacted Diesel Toys about the conversion.
- April 2011: Placed into storage during my National Guard Deployment to Kuwait.  My sister and brother-in-law would start it every two to three weeks while I was away.
- Early April 2012: Brought out of storage and installed the cosmetic black bits, and the Metal Tech sliders.
- Late April 2012: Drove to San Antonio and dropped it off at Diesel Toys for the Diesel Conversion.
- October 2012: Picked her up from Diesel Toys.  It wasn't supposed to take that long.  There was an issue with the boat the diesel engine was on and Customs rerouted the entire ship.
- November 2012: Delancy and Conner installed the TC UCA, Toy Outfitter Links, ExpOne Rear Bumper, Front Spacer, and new wheels and tires.
- Later November 2012: Moved to Minnesota
- January 2013: Decided to sell her.

Fuel Consumption:
- w/265s - 23-24 mpg.  I picked up the FJ from Diesel Toys in San Antonio and drove back to Norman, OK.  She still had the stock 265s.  We ran interstate the entire trip back at roughly 70-80 mph.  We averaged 23-24 mpg on every refuel until I put the larger tires on her.
- w/285s - 18-21 mpg.  Since I put an aggressive 285 tire on the FJ the mileage went down.  I have been told larger tires can effect the odometer.  We tested the odometer against the GPS on our phone and found that it is off by about 10% in this way:  When the trip odometer reads 250 miles we'd actually gone 275 miles.
- If you calculate mileage off the actual reading then it hits close to 18-19 mpg.  If you calculate it based on what the GPS claims, the mileage is closer to 20-21.  This does not seem to be effected much when she is in 4WD either.  At the beginning of December we received 12" of snow one weekend.  I was in 4 high most of that weekend to be safe.  I hit just about the same numbers on fuel mileage in 4 high.
- The last couple of tanks have been hitting between 20-23mpg and that is with more highway miles.

Other Notes:
- From Oklahoma.  I moved to Minnesota (Twin Cities area) after the undercoating was applied. No rust.
- Neither Oklahoma or Minnesota inspects vehicles any more.  It is still registered as a gasoline engine, but there is no place to describe the engine on the title anyway. Unless you're from California, you shouldn't have any issues.
- Paint has small scratches typical of everyday life.
- I just replaced the windshield.
- Backup sensors do not work.
- The passenger side door, on the window/lock panel, I busted a clip when I was installing the new mirrors and handles (see photos below).
- The back storage area is roughed up from some use.
- We didn't hook up the lights on the ExpOne rear bumper, but they are installed.
- It has been starting great, even in the below freezing temps.
- I had planned to buy 3" suspension life up front and raise it 2" in the rear, buy a new front bumper (black, of course) and winch, and eventually a roof rack.  In my truly wild moments, I thought of doing a 2" long travel kit with dual suspension.

Thank you for looking!

Toyota sells six of 10 of hybrids in California

Wed, 31 Jul 2013

In an apparent shot back at Ford's increasing market share of electrified vehicles and claim that it accepts more Prius trade-ins for its own hybrids than any other car, Toyota has flexed a muscle and played the numbers game to put the Blue Oval in its place.
Leaning on its hybrid market dominance in California, the Japanese automaker stated that six out of 10 hybrids sold in the Golden State are Toyota models. And it keeps coming: Year-to-date through May 2013, Toyota sold five times more hybrids than Ford. One of every two hybrids in California is a Prius model. In addition, Toyota notes that it has sold 1.5 million Prius vehicles in the US, 90-percent of which are still on the road today.

2014 Toyota Corolla details leaked

Thu, 09 May 2013

Toyota will launch the 2014 Corolla later this year, and thanks to the ever-leaky internet, a couple of key details about the new sedan have been revealed. Car and Driver was able to uncover these bits of information thanks to someone at a Toyota dealer in Kansas who has seen the car, as well as its order guide, though the dealer's site has since removed its original posting.
We got our first glimpse at the next-generation Corolla's design at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show, where Toyota unveiled the Furia concept, pictured above. Yes, it looks all sporty and aggressive, but fear not, appliance shoppers, C/D says that the production car should have a couple of Furia bits mixed in with a huge helping of Camry-inspired styling.
The 2014 Corolla will reportedly continue to use a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine, though the mill has been massaged a bit, adding Toyota's Valvematic continuously variable valve timing. A four-speed automatic (yep!) will be offered in the base model, though the manual transmission now has six gears, and higher trim levels can be had with a CVT. Both engine output and fuel economy numbers should improve slightly over the 2013 model. Currently, the Corolla produces 132 horsepower and 128 pound-feet of torque, and achieves 27/34 miles per gallon (city/highway) with the five-speed manual 'box.

Toyota officially outsells GM, VW through first three quarters

Tue, 29 Oct 2013

When it comes to global vehicle deliveries, the term "Big Three" doesn't apply to Ford, Chrysler and General Motors, but instead Toyota, GM and Volkswagen - in that order - through the third quarter of 2013. Toyota sold 7.41-million vehicles through the third quarter and is on track to deliver more vehicles this year than GM and VW, which sold 7.25-million and 7.03-million, respectively, through the same period, Bloomberg reports.
During the third quarter, from July to September, Toyota's 2.5-million deliveries helped to push it higher than its closest competitors this year. In that period, GM delivered 2.4-million vehicles while VW posted 2.33-million deliveries.
Part of the reason behind Toyota's and other Japanese automakers resurgence globally is the weakened yen, which can be attributed to policies made by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe since he took office in December 2012. Many refer to those monetary easing policies as 'Abenomics,' which has led some, such as Ford, to call Japan a currency manipulator and is a big reason why the US is lobbying to oppose Japan's entry into the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP).
