Executive Summary -
Positives: FJ62 with 3fe runs, interior is fair, exterior is fair, comes with a working transmission (not installed), comes with additional 3fe engine.
Negative: Transmission is bad, needs a knuckle rebuild.

This is a 1988 Toyota Landcruiser FJ62.  The engine runs well.  The interior is in decent shape.  The seats are stained and the carpet has some stains but it is dark brown.  The rear carpet has already been replaced once and will need replacing again. The rear seat had a small bow to it.  It folds down properly and functions normal.  The driver side of this vehicle's body is in good shape.  The passenger side has some dents and dings along all of the panels.  I do not know what it takes for body work but I don't consider any of them to be major.  I have only driven this vehicle from where I bought it to my house.  It ran well but it needs a transmission.  I drove it home in first gear.  The previous owner said the trany ran out of fluid and he kept driving it until it was too late.  I have not tried topping it off or even changing it because I figured a buyer would like to look at the fluid.  I am selling this vehicle with an automatic transmission that I have pulled out of another cruiser that I own.  The second transmission works great and has about 200,000 miles on it.  I will install it for $1,000 on top of the sale price or just ship it with the vehicle and you get 2 transmissions.  This vehicle has a leak in the steering knuckle.  It will need a rebuild.  That is my assessment.  I have never done this procedure but it seems quite common with these cruisers.  Everything else is in good working condition.  the dash pad is not great but it's really hard to find one without cracks.  To sweeten this sale more I will include another 3fe engine that I pulled out of my other cruiser.  It had around 200,000 miles on it.  I believe this engine just needs a rebuild.  The compression for the second engine are cylinder 1-6 = 102, 104, 103, 109, 100, 105.  At the very least you get an additional 3fe set up for parts or to sell as you see fit. Buyer will pay shipping costs.  I am willing to work out a delivery strategy or any other crazy scheme somebody wants to concoct.  This cruiser will be a good starting point for a person that wants to have a project. It can easily be a very nice stock cruiser or get the full upgrade.  There is only one 2 inch portion of the passenger rear fender where I can see any rust that might need attention.  It has lived it's life in Nevada. I can answer any additional questions or would be happy to have a potential buyer come see it before final bid.

Toyota reveals new TS040 Hybrid LMP1 [w/videos, poll]

Thu, 27 Mar 2014

There's a new season of motor racing upon us, and while that doesn't always mean a new crop of cars in every series, in the case of the 2014 FIA World Endurance Championship, that's exactly what it means. Porsche recently revealed its new 919 Hybrid and Audi its revised R18 E-Tron Quattro. Now it's Toyota's turn.
Revealed today at the Paul Ricard test track in the South of France, the new TS040 Hybrid is based on the TS030 Hybrid it replaces, redesigned to meet the latest regulations established by the FIA and ACO for the World Endurance Championship and its flagship race, the 24 Hours of Le Mans. In accordance with said regulations, the TS040 is two inches narrower than the TS030 and also incorporates a new hybrid powertrain.
The previous 3.4-liter V8 has been replaced by a 3.7-liter V8 developing 513 horsepower, and the new engine is coupled to an Aisin AW electric motor at the front, a Denso electric motor at the rear and a Nisshinbo super-capacitor that combine to kick out an extra 473 hp, giving the system a combined output of nearly 1,000 horsepower while consuming 25 percent less fuel than last year's car. It also gives the TS040 all-wheel drive to help channel all that power to the road.

Toyota reaffirms commitment to body-on-frame SUVs

Mon, 29 Jul 2013

Toyota sold 121,055 Highlander CUVs in 2012, according to Automotive News. By comparison, it sold 78,457 examples of four different body-on-frame, truck-based SUVs (4Runner, FJ Cruiser, Sequoia and Land Cruiser). One could argue then, that the traditional SUVs aren't pulling their weight from a sales perspective. Yet that isn't stopping Toyota from reaffirming its commitment to a segment that has seen its former champions - Ford, General Motors and Chrysler - abandon it with alarming speed. Ford and GM still offer body-on frame utilities, but only in the very largest offerings, catering to seven or even eight passengers. Everything outside of the Expedition or Tahoe rides now on a unibody.
Toyota's decision to stick with the technology is good news if you're in the market for smaller SUVs that are still capable of heading well off the beaten path. Outside of the Jeep Wrangler, Grand Cherokee (a unibody) and perhaps Nissan Xterra, there's not much in terms of capable SUVs between $20,000 and $50,000. As the Toyota brand's US head, Bill Fay, says, "Clearly, the trend has shifted, but there is still an owner base that is interested in these vehicles."
We don't doubt Fay on that, but it may also be somewhat telling that Toyota's SUV lineup is aging, and we haven't seen or heard much about replacement models in the pipeline. Admittedly, the 4Runner (pictured) has been facelifted for 2014, but it's mostly cosmetic in nature. Despite Toyota's posturing, we still expect its body-on-frame lineup to thin in the coming years as sales dwindle and escalating fuel-economy standards make business cases even tougher. Here's hoping that Toyota manages to keep at least one rough-and-tumble SUV in its lineup in the coming years.

Toyota GT86 14R-60 shows how to do lightweight at a steep price

Sat, 11 Oct 2014

Toyota is finally making good on its Griffon concept from last year with this limited-edition 14R-60 that basically hops through the Toyota Racing Development catalog to imagine the ultimate lightweight GT86 (the continental relative to the Scion FR-S/Subaru BR-Z). Unfortunately, it's not coming stateside, and even if this modded Toyobaru were coming here, you might not want to pay the rather steep price.
Like the concept, the 2.0-liter boxer engine still makes the same 197 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque. However, the drivetrain isn't entirely untouched thanks to a new air filter, engine oil cooler, a reinforced clutch, lightweight flywheel, and mechanical limited-slip differential from TRD. The six-speed transmission is also tweaked, with different gearing in first and second and an altered final drive ratio.
To keep things planted the suspension gets a new coilovers, a V-shaped tower brace in the front and another in the rear. Improved deceleration comes thanks to upgraded brakes. There also are even more goodies on the outside, including a complete body kit that includes a carbon-fiber roof and massive rear spoiler. The stock wheels are replaced with 18-inch forged magnesium units, as well.
