the 2009 Toyota Prius' hood resides the "Hybrid Synergy Drive." This
drive train consists of a 1.5-liter gasoline four-cylinder engine and two
electric motors -- one driving the front wheels, the other functioning solely
as a generator to recharge the car's battery pack. Power is routed through a
specialized continuously variable automatic transmission. The gas engine
produces 76 horsepower and 82 pound-feet of torque. With the electric motor,
net peak hp is 110, which is deceiving since the two power sources hit their
peaks at different times. Regardless, power delivery is smooth and consistent
from rest all the way to top speed. Although
the 2009 Toyota Prius would make a fine highway companion, the car really
shines when driven in the city, where its light steering, tight turning radius
and excellent visibility make it easy to park and maneuver through traffic.
Additionally, the Prius often returns its best gas mileage in freeway gridlock,
as it's able to spend more time in full-electric mode. Moreover,
the Prius stands out by offering an unusual but uniquely space-efficient body
design. It may not look big from the outside, but climb inside and you'll find
the Prius surprisingly large and utilitarian. The backseat offers plenty of
room for adults and rear-facing infant seats. The 14.4-cubic-foot hatchback
trunk is also quite large and can accommodate several roller suitcases, golf
clubs or a double stroller. Plus, the folding seatbacks provide an
uninterrupted cargo area that no sedan can match. This
Prius comes with optional Package #3 (a $2,555 value) which includes the JBL cd
changer, MP3, satellite radio and bluetooth, stability control, and backup
camera. It also has optional leather seats, which is a $1,499 value. This car
has outstanding gas mileage, low emissions, a generous amount of interior room,
and is easy to maneuver in tight spaces, all at a terrific price.

1967 Toyota 2000GT most expensive Asian car ever sold at $1.2M
Fri, 10 May 2013Toyota's agelessly beautiful 2000GT has been sold by RM Auctions for $1.16 million, making it the new record holder for the most expensive Asian car ever sold. As always, rarity played a big factory in driving up the price; just 351 2000GT models were built, and only 62 left-hand-drive cars (like this one). The classic Toyota, standout member of Texas car-collector Don Davies' paddock, was originally a US-delivery car that spent time in a collection back in a Japan before returning to Texas just a short time ago. The car last sold in March of 2011, for just $650,000.
Enthusiasts will recognize the 2000GT as perhaps the most heralded Japanese classic of all time. The Toyota was a contemporary of the Jaguar E-Type - though one that obviously sold in a fraction of the English car's numbers - that was well reviewed by the motoring press of the day. Sometimes referred to as Japan's first supercar, the 2000GT boasted a 150-horsepower, dual overhead cam, 2.0-liter straight-six engine; a five-speed manual transmission; and a reported top speed of over 135 miles per hour.
RM described this record-setting example as, "the finest and most authentic 2000GT to come to market in recent years," equating it with blue chip classic exotics like the Ferrari Daytona and Lamborghini Miura.
Toyota pimps out Esquire van for Japanese businessmen [w/video]
Wed, 29 Oct 2014A few months back we reported on a dealership owner in Japan who was petitioning Toyota to make a luxury van. The problem, he reasoned, was that he couldn't take as many friends, colleagues and clients around with him in his Lexus LS, and his Toyota Alphard van wasn't luxurious enough. Well, it seems like he wasn't alone, and Toyota has listened.
The Japanese auto giant has just revealed the Esquire, a new luxury van designed with just such customers in mind. It's significantly smaller than the Sienna we get in America, smaller than the aforementioned Alphard and about the same size as (this writer's favorite) the JDM Noah van (on which we gather it's based). But what sets the Esquire apart is its upscale appearance.
The boxy van is distinguished by its dominant T-shaped chrome grille with a unique emblem that encompasses a shield, sword, "the collar of a gentleman's suit" and the letters Esq. The flank is characterized by a strong beltline with chrome lower window frame and an expansive greenhouse with tinted rear glass. Inside the flexible cabin you'll find accommodation for seven or eight passengers (depending on specification), synthetic leather upholstery and wood and metallic trim. There are even wheelchair-enabled models on offer as well.
Toyota asking NHTSA for fuel cell car safety exemption regarding electric shocks
Mon, 30 Jun 2014Toyota is requesting an exemption from federal safety regulations that govern electric cars as it prepares to launch a small-scale hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle fleet.
The Japanese automaker is targeting Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 305, which covers the packaging of high-voltage parts in electric cars. According to Uncle Sam, these systems need to be isolated so that passengers and first responders aren't electrocuted in the event of a crash. That seems pretty smart, but it's become a problem for Toyota's upcoming production fuel cell vehicle, as the mechanism that prevents electric shocks in low-speed crashes will apparently simply keep Toyota's car from even functioning.
Instead of the federally approved system, Bloomberg reports that Toyota plans to insulate the high-voltage wires and cables in the car, along with shielding electrical components like the fuel cells, electric motor and batteries with (presumably non-conductive) metal barriers.
