Up for sale is an original paint 1956 ragtop deluxe that spent 30 years in dry storage (1981-2011). Rebuilt freeway flier transmission with a 3.88 R&P (70mph cruising speed), and new 1915cc engine just broke in with only a few hundred miles on it. This car is peppy and fun to drive!
New tires on custom made to order (by BBS) sprint star wheels. Rebuilt drop spindles, new KYB shocks, new brakes all around, new Wolfsburg West canvas top, new window rubber, new wipers, various seals, etc. Included in the sale is a set of Wolfsburg West front door window scrapers, felt window guides, outer perimeter door seals, and front hood seal. Bug is converted to 12v with all lights working, new bulbs, new HD battery with 3 year warranty, and new auto starter.
Matching door, decklid, and ignition key. Original pans with matching numbers body and chassis. Original upholstery, panels, and paint. Correct, original two fold '56 only mid-year ragtop assembly. Reupholster, or throw a shirt over the front backrests as I have; they're comfortable as is.
Since this car sat in storage for a long time, it does not have the typical driving rust of a car this age. All of the metal is original. It has never been restored, so what you see is what it is. The heater channels are solid with a little bit of rust on the driver side top from the carpet, a little above the jack points, front firewall corners, front apron tray, and the sides of the rear pans... much, much less than a typical, unrestored '56, let alone a ragtop. H aprons are straight front and rear. This car needs no metal work to drive: it is currently my reliable daily, insured and registered in my name.
Gorgeous patina! I started rubbing out the paint by hand and it could use a little more work to blend out real nice. The right rear fender is the only body panel that has been repainted (long ago). The remaining three fenders are original, also the 4 tab hood, doors, front and rear aprons, and "W" decklid.
There is a crack in the front window right under where the left wiper blade sits, but its not very noticeable. I also wanted to mention that the front tires sometimes rub a little at full steering lock and suspension compression. If this were to bother you, a set of 145's would solve this problem, and a 155 move to spare. If the buyer were to want this swapped around prior to pick up, we can work that out.
1915cc engine is as follows: brand new aluminum HD block, new Scat crank and 4340 rods, CB lightened flywheel and etched pulley, Sachs clutch, CB cam and lifters, CB full flow Maxi pump, AA 94 pistons/cyls, DRD big valve dual spring racing heads, chromoly pushrods, genuine Weber 44 IDF with CB manifold, new exhaust, Carter electric fuel pump, and vintage 010 mechanical distributor.
If you have any questions feel free to ask. Thanks,
K

VW makes $23K on every Porsche sold, more than Bentley or Lamborghini
Fri, 14 Mar 2014It's a good time to be in the luxury car business. In Volkswagen Group's financial report for the 2013 fiscal year, it is revealed that that Porsche enjoyed an operating margin of 18 percent. That means the Stuttgart brand made on average about $23,200 per car sold, according to BusinessWeek. Bentley wasn't far behind, and Audi (which was combined with Lamborghini) posted a 10.1 percent margin. This compares to only around 2.9 percent for the Volkswagen brand.
"Luxury brands are on fire," said Dave Sullivan, an industry analyst at AutoPacific. He said that the average profit margin is between six and eight percent. Brands like Porsche and Bentley have the benefit of competing in rarefied markets. Buyers looking at one their vehicles have fewer models to shop against and don't care as much about price. They can also charge more for options, which further boosts income, according to BusinessWeek.
In a way, we should be more impressed by the continued success from Audi. Its models generally have direct competitors in every segment from the other premium automakers. Plus, their buyers aren't the captains of industry who are shopping for a Bentley. Still, the Four Rings is leading rivals in sales so far this year.
Andretti Autosport partners with Volkswagen for Global Rallycross season
Tue, 14 Jan 2014Michael Andretti and Volkswagen have both been involved in Global Rallycross for a couple of years, but not together. Andretti Motorsports Marketing organized the final round of the 2012 GRC series in Las Vegas, and there were rumors then that Andretti was going to get in. Around the same time there were news reports that Volkswagen was preparing a 600-hp Polo Mk5 to race in the SuperCar class; the photo above is racer Anton Marklund in his privateer Marklund Motorsports Polo at the 2013 X-Games round in Los Angeles.
Now it's official: Andretti Autosport will campaign the 2014 GRC season with VWs. That's all that's been said for now, Andretti being busy at the moment launching four entries for IndyCar, two for Indy Lights and two for Pro Mazda. We have a feeling we'll be seeing the MkVII Golf involved, but the cars and the driver lineup will be presented at the Chicago Auto Show on February 6.
Volkswagen's De Silva says next Scirocco will be 'completely different'
Tue, 02 Apr 2013From our perspective, the reborn Volkswagen Scirocco is a handsome (if squat) little thing. Yet design-wise, it's always struck us as uncomfortably close to the Golf three-door hatchback with which it shares its basic underpinnings. That aesthetic kinship may be part of the reason why Volkswagen has steadfastly refused to import the Scirocco to North America, seeing as how the Golf doesn't regularly set the company's sales charts alight, and it's less expensive.
But that visual similarity might be about to change, says Walter De Silva, who recently told Australia's Car Advice that, "It must be completely different... we don't want to repeat the bodystyle of the Scirocco, we want to change that." Further, the Volkswagen Group's design boss says that the next-generation car isn't terribly far along in development yet - "at the moment, it's only a studio [project]... it's not defined." It's probably just as well, as the new seventh-generation Golf arguably borrows some of its design from the current Scirocco anyway.
So we should expect a much bolder, more differentiated design, right? Well, yes, no and maybe. Back in September, De Silva himself was quoted as saying that the era of flamboyant styling has passed, and that future VW designs will be simpler to better reflect the times and preserve resale value. So... how different could it be?
