This is an old drag race project that was started ages ago, later parked in the woods for 20 years, later stored in a shipping container for 3 years and now finally being sold because the container is gone and I don't want this thing in my yard.  The eBay auction thing forced me to indicate a title type of some kind but there is not one.  There is NO title for this car. There is no VIN anywhere on this car.  It was always intended as a drag race toy and nothing more.  While it might just be useful for scrap metal, I thought perhaps someone might be curious to make a hotrod out of it and for a dollar I'm willing to find out before sending it to the crusher.

It is a front steer, torsion rod front suspension, coilover / ladder bar rear suspension, pickup truck chassis with a roll cage welded to it and a Volkswagen Beetle body set on top.  Up front is a 500ci Cadillac Eldorado engine.  As you can see, it is not all that sporty looking and is likely seized.  It wasn't three years ago but I haven't messed with it since socking it away in a conex box and I'm not inclined to mess with it now.  It was originally setup for a powerglide but that transmission never got installed and is not included in this auction.

The rear axle is a 31 spline Ford 9" with a 4.56 gear and a mini spool. It turns just fine and is easily the most valuable piece in this piece.  The wheel studs are 5 on 5.5" centers which is a typical Ford pattern if I recall correctly.

All glass is actually lexan and the rear fenders are fiberglass.  The steering wheel is one of those pop off adapter things, I have no idea if it still works.  I tried to tell as much of the story with the pictures as I could but if you have any questions, feel free to ask them as I am not accepting returns on this auction and I want it gone within two weeks.

On Jul-10-13 at 21:12:25 PDT, seller added the following information:

There is a typo in the original description.  The rear axle wheel studs are on a 5 on 4.5" lug pattern.  If you have already bid on this item and this is a problem, please contact me directly.  Thank you.

Witness this insane 736-hp VW Golf immolate its front tires

Mon, 11 Mar 2013

There's torque steer and then there's what we'll from now on dub "The Boba," as in Boba Kettler. The German tuner has a way with the Volkswagen Golf, and the MkI example you see above has been touched with 736 horsepower - that's right, 96 more ponies than a new SRT Viper, all trying to get to ground through those two front wheels.
The 2.0-liter, 16-valve engine has an 8,800 rpm redline and is aided by a Garrett GTX3582R turbocharger shoving 50 psi through the internals. Other upgrades include a new ECU (natch) and a six-speed 'box among other treats. The rubber is Toyo R888s - street-legal competition tires. The result is enough smoke for three Chinese New Years when the lights go green. Indeed, the standing start isn't its forte, but it can apparently get from 62 miles per hour to 124 mph in five seconds.
Watch it go in the video below. And know that this isn't even Boba's best work; he's got a 900-hp MkII Golf that'll do 0-62 mph in 2.3 seconds.

VW debuts Get Happy Super Bowl ad

Mon, 28 Jan 2013

Brace yourself for another tidal wave of Super Bowl commercials. Volkswagen has released its spot for this year's big game. Set to air during the second quarter, the Get Happy spot follows one jubilant office worker as he makes his way through the day, spreading joy wherever he goes. The source of his happiness? A Volkswagen Beetle, of course. Now, if you're wondering why a gaggle of white guys are running around on your screen with Jamaican accents, it will help to know the spot is part of a larger Get Happy campaign featuring Jimmy Cliff.
The first ad in the series featured the artist singing his rendition of "C'Mon, Get Happy," complete with a little help from some notorious unhappy YouTube stars. You can take a look at the new ad before it airs below, along with the complete press release for a little more background.

Europeans get first crack at new Golf Variant wagon

Mon, 04 Mar 2013

Just last week, when we brought you news of a new Volkswagen Golf variant out and testing in Europe, we had no idea we were being so literal with out description. For it seems that VW has every intention of calling its new Golf wagon, making its Geneva debut, the "Golf Variant."
Odd/interesting sobriquets taken as read then, there's a lot to like about this new small wagon from VW. The Variant will shed some 232 pounds in this generation, and will come to market with two efficient TDI engines. Volkswagen isn't giving us displacement figures for either yet, but we're told the diesels will come with outputs of 110 and 150 horsepower. The 110-hp TDI BlueMotion Varient will be good for a whopping 71.3 miles per gallon on the European cycle, when mated to the six-speed manual transmission.
The German automaker has brought along an all-wheel-drive 4Motion version of the Gold Variant to bow in Geneva, as well, and a natural gas-burning TGI BlueMotion is said to be "in the pipeline."
