I purchased this car from the original owner in 2013.  Over the last year, the car has been joyfully driven and now it's time to pass it on.  This is a rare find not only because of the condition of the car, the limited edition, the limited ownership, the original manuals, the low miles, how well it handles, and much more but also because it is ready to drive without a list of "things needed to be done."  Only two of these cars were sent to each VW dealer in the US in 1978, which makes them very collectible (total of 1100 shipped).  These cars featured Sport Wheels, Wood Grain Dash, White Top and Interior, Clock, Padded Steering Wheel and Upgraded Radio.

The car is in excellent condition.  It has a new top and headliner, original top boot (sort of dingy), as well as new seals on the top frame.  It has all new seat covers front and back, as well as new carpet.  The exterior paint job is new (clear coat + base) while the interior paint remains original.  The German glass, chrome and lenses are original and in great shape.  It has a new stereo w/ CD and MP3 as well as new speakers.  The floor pans are solid with no rust appearing.  New running boards were installed.  Mechanically excellent- motor runs great with high compression, new filters, new fuel pump, new engine seals, injectors cleaned and serviced and new alternator/regulator.  The brakes have been replaced, clutch rebuilt with no shifting issues or grinding or rattling.  All electrical components function.  New fuel sending unit and gauge have been installed, as well as entire fuel line from tank to engine has been replaced, along with all breather hoses.  Suspension is great and handles tightly.  Wheels have been refinished.  Tires are not new but have plenty of tread.

Volkswagen Routan dead, pour out a sippy cup for your little homies

Thu, 28 Mar 2013

America's minivan wolfpack has just gotten smaller by one. According to Automotive News, Volkswagen officials have confirmed what we've suspected for some time - the Routan is dead. Essentially a lightly reworked version of the Dodge Grand Caravan, the Routan actually hasn't been rolling off of Chrysler's Windsor, Ontario production line at all this year, but VW had yet to confirm its discontinuation. However, Jonathan Browning, CEO of VW America, has reportedly admitted that the Routan is being axed, with remaining units expected to be funneled into corporate functions for "internal purposes."
The move isn't unexpected - the Routan has never been a big seller, with just 57,650 examples moved since sales began in 2008 - peak yearly sales totaled under 16,000 units, and that was back in 2010. And while many have talked of the minivan segment shrinking, Automotive News points out that the segment actually grew 14 percent last year to 597,118 units, though it should be noted that most segments have been on sales upticks as the US economy chugs out of its recession.
So, is volume-crazy Volkswagen prepared to pass on large family vehicle sales? Probably not - the German automaker has signaled that it plans to build a three-row crossover in North America soon, and we wouldn't be surprised if it looks an awful lot like the Crossblue Concept from January's Detroit Auto Show - minus the fancy plug-in diesel powertrain.

UAW tactics called into question at VW's TN plant

Thu, 26 Sep 2013

The United Auto Workers is in hot water with some of the very workers it is trying to unionize at Volkswagen's Chattanooga assembly plant. According to The Tennessean, eight Volkswagen factory workers have filed complaints against the UAW with the National Labor Relations Board, claiming the union "misled or coerced" them into formally asking for union representation.
The UAW has instituted a major push at the Chattanooga plant to represent the 2,500 hourly laborers that build the VW Passat by using what's called a card-check process. The tactic is opposed by the National Right to Work Legal Defense foundation, the group representing the workers. The card-check process demands that a company recognize a union that obtains the signatures of more than half its workforce, according to The Tennessean. This tactic is in contrast to the more traditional route, which sees employees vote on union representation.
The workers filing the complaint claim that the UAW told them the cards merely called for a secret ballot, rather than an outright demand for union representation. Workers also allege that the UAW has made it overly difficult to reclaim their signed cards, some of which were signed so long ago that they have been rendered invalid. Although the cards can force a company's hand, federal law still allows the company to ask for a secret ballot before yielding to unionized workers.

Touring the Volkswagen Museum in Wolfsburg

Mon, 23 Sep 2013

Forgive the ribbon up top - this isn't so much of a Read This as a Look At This. Ran When Parked took a tour of the sprawling Volkswagen Museum in Wolfsburg, and while there's a spot of text about the different and unique vehicles on display in the rotating exhibits, it's largely the collection of pictures of odd, one-off VW-badged cars and vans that excites. If you're a fan of the weird and wild, this is a post you'll want to look at.
As RWP points out, this is the larger, but less busy, museum targeted purely at Volkswagen products. The smaller AutoStadt museum, meanwhile, covers a much broader swath, with products from other Volkswagen Group members.
