This bus has been looked after very well after I bought it 3 years ago. It is on a road trip as we speak (my wife and I are on our honeymoon). It has roughly 4200 miles on the rebuilt engine and has been to a few shops between here (California) and Florida to have the brakes worked on and the oil changed, valves adjusted. This things is pretty much turn key for a road trip with the exception to a few minor mechanical items that I will mention next.
Following Specs:
Rebuilt engine (1776 CC) with Dual Weber Carbs.
Two new (OE) Dual Port heads with oversized (37mm x 40 mm) valves.
Full set of Mahle oversized (90.5 mm) pistons and cylinders fitted with total seal rings.
Full set of German Crankcase bearings, rod bearings, and camshaft bearings.
30 mm oversized high volume oil pump.
Full set of German lifters.
Late model dual port "A" case.
Full set of gaskets flywheel seal and O rings.
Rebuilt Weber Carbs (34 ITC).
Extractor Exhaust System, heater boxes, chrome dog house, tin screws, NGK Spark plugs and Bosch plug wire.
Machine cut heads and case to fit oversized pistons and cylinders.
Polished crank and measured all clearances.
New Rear Brake (Master) Cylinders
New Brakes (front and rear).
New Brake lines.
New Signal indicator.
All new Upholstery (Marine quality material).
New wheel bearings.
Oil changed and valves adjusted after first 1200 miles on new engine.
Valves adjusted again at 3000 miles.
Issues to be looked at, but not really needed right away:
Ball joints replaced - come with bus just need to be installed
Window know and sliding door handle replaced on sliding door.
Have door locks repaired, none seem to work except back hatch.

Volkswagen Cross Up! headed for production after Geneva reveal

Wed, 13 Feb 2013

The last time we saw the Volkswagen Cross Up!, it was sitting out in the snow in prototype form, but the next time we'll see this slightly more rugged version of the diminutive Up! hatchback will be when it makes its production debut at the Geneva Motor Show next month. Looking like a micro-crossover with its raised ground clearance and black cladding, the Cross Up! will be the fourth "Cross" model for VW (after the CrossPolo, CrossGolf and CrossTouran) when it goes on sale this summer in mainland Europe (UK sales remain up in the air and US sales are highly unlikely).
Overall, the styling of the production Cross Up! has stayed fairly true to the 2011 concept car, including the front and rear fascias that offer a more rugged look, stocky 16-inch wheels and roof rack side rails. Inside, this model will get unique interior enhancements such as "Cross Up!" sill plates and an instrument panel available in red, black or silver. Like the regular Up!, the Cross Up! is powered by a 74-horsepower, 1.0-liter three-cylinder engine paired to a five-speed manual transmission, and it doesn't look like all-wheel drive will be part of the picture. For more details on the upcoming Cross Up!, check out VW's press release posted below.

VW to relax ambitious US sales targets?

Fri, 16 May 2014

The Volkswagen brand sold 407,704 cars last year, a 6.95-percent decline compared to 2012, and it's down a further 8.36 percent through the end of April 2014 compared to this time last year. In order to to put the sales football between its Strategy 2018 goal posts, the brand would need to add 100,000 more sales every year to achieve the lofty 800,000-unit target. Coming to grips with how unreasonable that is, VW US CEO Michael Horn has said, "For now, we have to have realistic targets."
The reasons for the brand's slow-down are imprecise, but lots of folks are throwing lots of reasons around. Last November, VW Group Chairman Ferdinand Piech told Bloomberg, "We understand Europe, we understand China and we understand Brazil, [but] we only understand the US to a certain degree so far." Analysts say the brand hasn't had midsize and compact SUV offerings, especially an overdue retail version of the CrossBlue, and the ones it does have are priced too high for their segments. It "didn't introduce enough new engines, or alternative technologies or model variants" for the Passat and Jetta. It devoted so many resources to China that the US market suffered. It was being outspent two-to-one on advertising by competitors. Its J.D. Power dependability ratings aren't high enough to overcome its past. It "has never really taken the US customer seriously." And so on.
There's still no official admission of defeat concerning the target, but reading between the lines there are some VW execs that appear to accept it won't happen short of some deus ex machina. Still,
