Up for auction is a rare MKII Volkswagen Jetta ECODiesel. Distinguished by its 1.6l turbo diesel engine and catalytic converter, the ecoDIESEL can deliver over 50mpg with its 5 speed manual transmission, making it a real economical daily driver. Includes a K&N cone air filter for a few extra horsepower and MPG. This particular car was rescued last fall with hopes of making it my daily driver. Drove fine with no issues on the 40 mile drive home, but has not been driven since. It was driven home, the diesel injection pump removed and resealed due to a leak, and I have been unable to start since. I replaced the timing belt and tensioner roller as preventative maintenance while the pump was removed. I am not a Volkswagen enthusiast nor a diesel mechanic, and this car needs someone who is a bit of both.

Partial records including:
03/01/13 New timing belt and roller
11/01/12 New floor mats
11/01/12 New expansion tank and cap
11/01/12 New front grille
02/08/10 New alternator
08/27/07 New glow plugs (4)
05/13/07 New rear drums and shoes
05/11/07 New battery
05/11/07 New front rotors and pads
05/08/07 New starter
07/01/05 New power steering reservoir

One service record indicates a mileage of 207867 in July of 2001, meaning only 28,000 miles in the last 12 years.

Pros:
Very rare model, one of 1 of 42 ecoDIESELs imported for the 92 model year
Beautiful interior, comfortable seats
Like new tires and brakes
Good suspension
Good clutch
Solid strut towers
Original keys (2)

Cons:
Currently not running, needs injection pump repair or replacement
Cracked windshield
Radio needs code
Some rust, not as much as most MKIIs. Not bad.
Missing front VW emblem
Passenger rear window needs regulator

Listing is to the best of my knowledge. Please ask all questions prior to the end of the auction. Willing to provide additional photographs on request. $100 deposit due within 48 hours of auction close. Complete payment due within 7 days of close of auction; vehicle needs picked up from Barberton, Ohio after payment is received during that time frame as well. VW recalling 2.64M vehicles worldwide over engine, light issues

Thu, 14 Nov 2013

Volkswagen is staging a massive, worldwide recall that's already grown from 1.68 million to 2.64 million vehicles and covers three different issues across a number of vehicles. We already reported on 61,000 Tiguans getting recalled over lighting issues - that was just in the US. Globally, however, VW will be recalling 800,000 Tiguans, according to Automotive News, with the focus on CUVs built between 2008 and 2011. The issue with the Tiguan relates to a simple fuse swap, so this is rather unremarkable, aside from the sheer number of vehicles being fixed. The real, troubling issues relate to gearboxes and pickups.
239,000 Amarok pickups (pictured right) are being recalled over fuel leaks, while 1.6 million vehicles are being recalled to swap the synthetic oil in dual-clutch transmissions with mineral oil. Now, the transmission issue is one for the global Volkswagen Group to address, not just the VW brand - vehicles from Audi, Škoda and Seat use the same seven-speed DSG and are covered under the recall, as well.
Why the switch from synthetic to mineral oil? Apparently, using the synthetic oil in a DSG and then subjecting it to stop-and-go conditions or heavy loads in a hot and humid climate can lead to electronic malfunctions, according to a Volkswagen press release. The switch, from the sounds of it, is largely a preventative measure.

VW to relax ambitious US sales targets?

Fri, 16 May 2014

The Volkswagen brand sold 407,704 cars last year, a 6.95-percent decline compared to 2012, and it's down a further 8.36 percent through the end of April 2014 compared to this time last year. In order to to put the sales football between its Strategy 2018 goal posts, the brand would need to add 100,000 more sales every year to achieve the lofty 800,000-unit target. Coming to grips with how unreasonable that is, VW US CEO Michael Horn has said, "For now, we have to have realistic targets."
The reasons for the brand's slow-down are imprecise, but lots of folks are throwing lots of reasons around. Last November, VW Group Chairman Ferdinand Piech told Bloomberg, "We understand Europe, we understand China and we understand Brazil, [but] we only understand the US to a certain degree so far." Analysts say the brand hasn't had midsize and compact SUV offerings, especially an overdue retail version of the CrossBlue, and the ones it does have are priced too high for their segments. It "didn't introduce enough new engines, or alternative technologies or model variants" for the Passat and Jetta. It devoted so many resources to China that the US market suffered. It was being outspent two-to-one on advertising by competitors. Its J.D. Power dependability ratings aren't high enough to overcome its past. It "has never really taken the US customer seriously." And so on.
There's still no official admission of defeat concerning the target, but reading between the lines there are some VW execs that appear to accept it won't happen short of some deus ex machina. Still,

Honda wins Commercial of the Decade, but not for the ad you think [w/VIDEO]

Honda's Commercial of the Decade: "Grrr" - Click above to watch video
The mad men at Adweek recently voted for the Commercial of the Decade (Super Bowl commercials not included) and Honda took top honors over memorable ads from the last ten years by companies like Nike, Budweiser and Sony. That's not a big surprise considering Honda often puts a huge amount of effort into its on-air spots. However, the Japanese automaker didn't win for the commercial you might have expected: "Cog." Though Honda's famous commercial that breaks down a European Accord Tourer into a Rube Goldberg-esque machine was also a finalist, it was beaten by another Honda commercial called "Grrr" that's narrated by Garrison Keillor of all people. You've probably never seen it, but you can after the jump.
Volkswagen also made the list of finalists, but the particular ad chosen out of all the comical VW ads we've seen was unexpected as well. Most surprising carmaker with a commercial in the finals: Saturn. Who knew...
