2003 VW Jetta GL 2.0L 5 Speed (One Owner)
Thank you for viewing my ad. Up for auction is nice 2003 VW Jetta GL 2.0L with a 5 speed manual transmission. This is a ONE OWNER car, with a CLEAN title. The mileage reads 235,786 which is all from highway travel. The color is Black with a Grey cloth interior. This Jetta was a trade in at a local NJ Volkswagen dealership where it was purchased brand new. The car runs and drives 100%, by looking at the car and driving it, you would never guess the mileage! The engine is a 2.0L SOHC 4 cylinder with a 5 speed manual transmission. You could expect to get 35+ MPG with VW without a problem.
Mechanically, the car is sound. I personally put some money into this car in parts and labor. The car just had a fresh synthetic oil change with 5W40, good for at least 5,000 miles untill the next one is due. Also installed, new brake pads front and rear, crank postion sensor (common part), and a driverside rear window regulator. The car appears to have been lowered just a bit, so it does ride some what firmer. Also, the rims are aftermarket upgraded 18" with 225 series tires all around. With those upgrades, this VW Jetta handles excellent and is a blast to drive. The clutch is strong, no slipping ever and the transmission shifts through all the gears smooth as silk. The 2.0L 4 cylinder engine revs happily and has plently of power.
Condition: This Jetta is a used car, so there are some imperfections. I am going to note everything I came accross. To start, the paint on the car is very nice and glossy. I just had the car fully detailed by a trusted professional and the car came out great. There is a light dent in the right rear on the quarter panel where it meets mid way on the door. There is a key mark on the passenger side of the car. There is some stone chipping on the lower part of the engine hood. The rims have some pitting on the outer lips (you can probably re-clearcoat) though they are presentable. The passenger side mirror has a crack in the glass. The windshield has a half circle crack (looks like a rock) on the passenger side of the screen) which does not seem to be spreading. The tires have plently of life left, I would say 50% tread ware left. All electronics work, all windows work up and down, and the power moon roof works great as well. There are no check lights on the dash either.
Bottom line, the car is very solid and a strong daily driver. This would make a great first car for a new driver, or even a daily commuter for someone who wants good MPG. I personally have put over 120 miles on the car and it drives very solid. If you are interested in this Jetta, please ask any questions you may have. Good luck bidding!

VW going turbo-only in 3 to 4 years
Wed, 18 Sep 2013This really was a matter of when, rather than if. Volkswagen will apparently be the first manufacturer to phase out naturally aspirated engines in favor of turbocharging its full slate. VW is kind of responsible for ushering in this push towards small-displacement, turbocharged engines that's taken the industry by storm. When it dropped its direct-injection, 2.0-liter turbo in the 2005 GTI it demonstrated that strapping an iron long to an engine can enhance the powertrain as a whole. VW made fuel economy gains, while also giving a linear, non-laggy turbo experience that it has replicated, model-after-model, to this day.
Speaking with The Detroit News, Volkswagen's executive Vice President of Group Quality, Marc Trahan, told the paper that, "We only have one normally aspirated gas engine, and when we go to the next generation vehicle that it's in, it will be replaced. So three, four years maximum."
Really, it's hard to get teary-eyed about either of these engines going away. VW has access to smaller powerplants that could easily match the performance of the 2.5 five-cylinder and the 3.6 V6, while gobbling up less fuel and providing a better driving experience. What we are sad about is that a similar statement about the extinction of NA engines came from the Vice President of Powertrain Engineering at Ford, Joe Bakaj. We'd certainly get teary-eyed over a world without Ford's excellent 5.0-liter V8.
Silverado HD, Touareg V10 TDI face off in diesel tug-of-war
Sun, 30 Dec 2012A couple weeks ago, we watched a Chevrolet Silverado get dominated by a Dodge Ram Heavy Duty in a fullsize pickup tug-of-war, but in that truck's defense, Chevy's Vortec gas engine was no match for the torquey Cummins turbo diesel. For our next round of vehicular tug-of-war, a Duramax-powered Silverado HD takes on Volkswagen Touareg V10 TDI.
Now, on paper, putting the Duramax V8's 365 horsepower and 660 pound-feet of torque up against the V10's 310 hp and 553 lb-ft looks like an easy win for the Bowtie, but unfortunately, this battle has a similar result as the Dodge versus Chevy video, with the Silverado smoking its tires trying to move forward as it gets pulled backwards. Put another way: YouTube 2, Chevy Silverado 0.
It just goes to show, though, that big tires, bolt-on fender flares and goofy smoke stacks don't improve your towing abilities. Besides, what did the Silverado driver expect when the Touareg V10 TDI has towed a Boeing 747 in the past?
Prop-driven VW Beetle hopes to land in Bonneville [w/video]
Thu, 10 Jan 2013Sometimes you meet folks who, when they tell you "Hey, I have an idea," your reflex response is to stop what you're doing and tell yourself, "Get ready...." We imagine Mike Niemans is one of those folks, and the idea in question is putting a tank engine on a Type 1 Volkswagen Beetle. Not just any old tank engine - as if there were such a thing when we're talking about putting them in cars - but a 668-cubic-inch, 220-horsepower radial engine built by Continental in 1941 and procured from an M2 tank.
In the image above Nieman is using the tank clutch hub to get the motor set up, but in one of the images below you can see what really belongs back there is: a two-inch, reverse-pitch prop taken from a wind generator. He says there's enough mojo with the propeller action to get the car rolling down the runway like a jet when he gives it gas - and speaking of gas, the engine's been refitted to run on propane.
After a few safety tweaks Nieman's going to take the matte-black Beetle to Bonneville, "put the prop on, let her go and see what happens!" We can't wait to see the video of that. There are two shakedown videos below to get you ready.
