This Ghia was purchased from an estate sale from the original owner in Sacramento CA in 2005.  It was then... and has always been rust free, no rust repair and no body damage ever. It was shipped to me in South Florida. I bought the Ghia to build it into what might have been if VW had determined to make the car perform at a level in keeping with its sporting design. All original panels refinished in the original color of Ravenna Green. The body was separated from the pan and every part of the car completely refurbed or replaced. Jake Raby of Aircooled technologies built a Type IV 2270 and matching 4 speed gearbox. He rates these engines dyno tested at 155hp /170lb/ft of torque. The stainless header exhaust sytem was purchased from Ahnendorp in Germany, the original exhaust manufacturer for the Porsche 356. An Oddysey AGM battery has been added since these photos. Needless to say this Ghia hustles. The brake system was upgraded with Porsche 944 calipers with Zimmerman cross drilled and vented rotors. polished Fuchs 16 X 6 wheels; including the spare. Porsche Carrera guages, Porsche Carrera seats. A period correct Blaupunkt stereo was fit with iPod/XM/Sirius capability. Full german weave carpet kit and new interior door panels, the dash is original and perfect. A period vintage Momo steering wheel completed the interior. This project was built without a budget and I realize the cost of the engine, tranny and exhaust were more than I will likely get as a sale price. But I have moved onto other projects and have too many cars... so this one will go. It is a spectacular Ghia and has won numerous first place trophies in local VW shows. Good luck bidding. Please ask questions before bidding, car is available for inspection before the auction ends.

1000-hp Mk1 VW Golf is terrifyingly cool

Tue, 04 Jun 2013

There are plenty of things to love about the Mk1 Volkswgen Golf. The machine's horsepower isn't one of them. From the factory, the little hatch cranked a breathy 112 horsepower from the most robust form of its 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine. Boba motoring, however, has taken that figure and multiplied it by a factor of nearly 10. If 1,000 horsepower sounds terrifying in a machine with a wheelbase of just 94.5 inches, it should. A massive Garrett GTX4202R turbo force-feeds the little mill through a tweaked 16-valve KR head. The crew calls the beast the 16Vampir, and we think that's fitting.
Of course, we'd wager you quit reading right about the time you set your eyes on that headline. Those of you who've stuck around this long can point yourselves below to see the maniacal creation in action. You won't be disappointed.

VW reveals Outback-rivaling Golf Alltrack ahead of Paris

Wed, 24 Sep 2014

The Volkswagen Passat Alltrack is getting a baby brother at this year's 2014 Paris Motor Show in the form of a new Golf Alltrack. Like its larger sibling, the little wagon is supposed to offer light-duty off-road driving ability combined with a more rugged look to show it off.
To give the Golf Alltrack that soft-road ability, VW is outfitting the wagon with its latest 4Motion all-wheel drive system from Haldex. The setup can decouple power from the rear-axle when not needed to save fuel. To further improve traction, the Alltrack gets VW's electronic differential lock, and the car can individually brake its inside wheel during hard cornering for better handling.
Volkswagen also wants the Alltrack to be able to visually show that it can handle getting away from the pavement, even though it starts life as a standard Golf wagon. That means jacking up the suspension an extra 0.75 inches and adding black moldings all the way around the car. There are also redesigned bumpers for the front and rear and silver underbody protection, plus new accents like anodized roof rails and silver mirror caps. The interior is essentially unchanged from the wagon, except for altered trim and Alltrack badges.

Volkswagen Cross Up! headed for production after Geneva reveal

Wed, 13 Feb 2013

The last time we saw the Volkswagen Cross Up!, it was sitting out in the snow in prototype form, but the next time we'll see this slightly more rugged version of the diminutive Up! hatchback will be when it makes its production debut at the Geneva Motor Show next month. Looking like a micro-crossover with its raised ground clearance and black cladding, the Cross Up! will be the fourth "Cross" model for VW (after the CrossPolo, CrossGolf and CrossTouran) when it goes on sale this summer in mainland Europe (UK sales remain up in the air and US sales are highly unlikely).
Overall, the styling of the production Cross Up! has stayed fairly true to the 2011 concept car, including the front and rear fascias that offer a more rugged look, stocky 16-inch wheels and roof rack side rails. Inside, this model will get unique interior enhancements such as "Cross Up!" sill plates and an instrument panel available in red, black or silver. Like the regular Up!, the Cross Up! is powered by a 74-horsepower, 1.0-liter three-cylinder engine paired to a five-speed manual transmission, and it doesn't look like all-wheel drive will be part of the picture. For more details on the upcoming Cross Up!, check out VW's press release posted below.
