Up for sale is my 2003 VW Passat W8 with 6-speed manual transmission and a low 68,000 miles! These cars are kind of rare and are getting harder to find in nice shape with low miles! These vehicles are all wheel drive and do very well in bad weather. I can a test to that myself when I had to drive home from work in a couple of last years snow storms! This car is a blast to drive! I will tell you EVERYTHING that I am aware of that is wrong with the vehicle. Keep in mind that these things are minor in my opinion but I want to be completely forth coming as I am with all of my auctions. The passenger side door handle and molding have light scrape marks (see pics), the interior passenger side door handle (wood grain) has a crack in it (hard to see in pics), the rubber antenna boot is worn (see pics), the interior drivers side door panel has a leather insert which has come unglued (see pics), there is minor wear around the center console (cant even see in pics), all of the outer lips of the wheels have the clear coat peeling off (see pics), the drivers side map light does not work (bulb?), the small fabric area by the sun roof switch peeled off and has been glued back up (see pics - cant really tell), headlights need reconditioning (hazed), the passenger side heated seat does not work, normal wear on drivers seat (no tears just cracking), needs a bath. Again I believe most of these are fairly minor and do not affect the performance of the vehicle. The car needs brake pads all the way around. I will replace them all if Buy It Now is used as well as a fresh oil change with European spec Mobil 1. The tires are decent and all match but I had planned on replacing them within a year or so.  I welded in dual Thrush mufflers (knock off Flowmasters) and replaced the pre-muffler with straight pipes. I have the pre-muffler and stock mufflers which will go with the car. I welded the stock tips back onto the new mufflers. I think the exhaust sounds great and isnt too loud. Everything was sprayed with high temp paint to keep it from rusting. The rear drivers side tire has a slow leak. I have not pulled it off to see why but it holds air for a few days before I need to put more in. I have run 92 octane gas in the car since I have had it. The side and rear windows have 20% tint. I did this myself and it looks pretty good although there are some imperfections. I personally would at least do the rear glass again but unless your looking for imperfections all of the windows look pretty good. There is an OEM CD changer mounted in the trunk that I have never even used and the car does have HID headlights from the factory. The ABS module and sensor were replaced last year. I will be occasionally driving the car so the mileage will be up slightly from whats in the pics and listed. Please ask any and all questions PRIOR to bidding and keep in mind that this is an auction to BUY the car, not to LOOK at it. I am willing to assist with shipping the vehicle within the US once ALL funds have cleared but prefer local pick up. I owe money on the car but will pay it off once a non-refundable deposit is received. With that in mind it could take a short period of time to receive the title from the bank just so the buyer is aware. Feel free to set up a time to take a look at the vehicle in person and go for a test drive. Once the vehicle leaves my property it will no longer be insured or registered. If the buyer is fairly local I would not have a problem driving the vehicle to your residence. There is no warranty on this vehicle. Please dont ask what my reserve is but I will say that it is quite a bit lower than the buy it now price! If a bidder places a high bid and then retracts it just to see what the reserve is, then that bidder will be blocked. Good luck bidding!

Prop-driven VW Beetle hopes to land in Bonneville [w/video]

Thu, 10 Jan 2013

Sometimes you meet folks who, when they tell you "Hey, I have an idea," your reflex response is to stop what you're doing and tell yourself, "Get ready...." We imagine Mike Niemans is one of those folks, and the idea in question is putting a tank engine on a Type 1 Volkswagen Beetle. Not just any old tank engine - as if there were such a thing when we're talking about putting them in cars - but a 668-cubic-inch, 220-horsepower radial engine built by Continental in 1941 and procured from an M2 tank.
In the image above Nieman is using the tank clutch hub to get the motor set up, but in one of the images below you can see what really belongs back there is: a two-inch, reverse-pitch prop taken from a wind generator. He says there's enough mojo with the propeller action to get the car rolling down the runway like a jet when he gives it gas - and speaking of gas, the engine's been refitted to run on propane.
After a few safety tweaks Nieman's going to take the matte-black Beetle to Bonneville, "put the prop on, let her go and see what happens!" We can't wait to see the video of that. There are two shakedown videos below to get you ready.

EU formally questions French government assistance of Peugeot's finance arm

Fri, 28 Dec 2012

Recently, the finance arm of PSA/Peugeot-Citroën was in such debt trouble that it was pricing itself out of the car loan market. The rates it was paying to service its debt, which was rated one step above junk, were so high that it was forced to charge car-buying customers higher rates than they could find elsewhere. This was adding to Peugeot's already impressive woes by sending revenue out the door to competitors.
Two months ago a deal was worked out with the French government whereby the state would provide 7 billion euro ($9 billion USD) in bonds to guarantee the finance arm's loans. The French government could nominate someone to join the Peugeot board, Peugeot would guarantee more French jobs, and on top of that deal, other banks would provide non-guaranteed loans. The government would take no equity stake in the car company.
Although not yet finalized, the arrangement is meant to create some breathing room for Peugeot Finance to lower its interest rates for customers, and a government-nominated board member, Louis Gallois, was recently named to Peugeot's supervisory board. The arrangement was also openly questioned by at least three competitors: Ford, Renault - which is 15-percent owned by the French government after it received state aid - and the German state of Lower Saxony, itself a 15-percent shareholder in Volkswagen.

Europeans get first crack at new Golf Variant wagon

Mon, 04 Mar 2013

Just last week, when we brought you news of a new Volkswagen Golf variant out and testing in Europe, we had no idea we were being so literal with out description. For it seems that VW has every intention of calling its new Golf wagon, making its Geneva debut, the "Golf Variant."
Odd/interesting sobriquets taken as read then, there's a lot to like about this new small wagon from VW. The Variant will shed some 232 pounds in this generation, and will come to market with two efficient TDI engines. Volkswagen isn't giving us displacement figures for either yet, but we're told the diesels will come with outputs of 110 and 150 horsepower. The 110-hp TDI BlueMotion Varient will be good for a whopping 71.3 miles per gallon on the European cycle, when mated to the six-speed manual transmission.
The German automaker has brought along an all-wheel-drive 4Motion version of the Gold Variant to bow in Geneva, as well, and a natural gas-burning TGI BlueMotion is said to be "in the pipeline."
