Up for auction is a 1981 VW Diesel Rabbit Pickup.  I purchased the pickup in December and have driven it a little and made a few improvements.  The previous owner was a college professor who passed away, I purchased it from his wife and daughter.  The history is incomplete, but with the paperwork I received it says in part "it has 259,000 on the body but I am sure that the engine has been overhauled one or more times because it runs so well."   I do not have the time or interest in the Rabbit to give it what it needs.  You could buy this Rabbit and just enjoy the reliability and great fuel mileage or give it some cosmetic updates and have it up to it's original condition.  In my opinion this is the good and those areas that would need attention:

The Good:
  • Great engine and fuel mileage
  • Will cruise comfortably at 70+mph
  • Rear camper that is watertight and has a rust-free and very few scratches in the bed
  • Driver's seat has no stains or rips
  • CD player radio
  • Comes with owner's manual and maintenance manual
  • Has new glow pugs and fuel filter- installed in February 2014
  • Battery new in July 2012
  • Great brakes
  • Only surface rust in a few areas
The Trouble:
  • Body has some damage with surface rust hood, passenger side door, and driver's side fender
  • Paint is in fair shape
  • Radio works, but is not wired correctly.  When the car is turned off the radio will not keep presets
  • Speedometer is off by about 8 mph.  Not sure if it is the tire size or gear
  • Passenger seat has stain and two rips
  • Headliner needs to be replaced
  • Cracks in windshield
  • Cooling fan does not kick on.  The fan works when connected directly to battery, but the engine does not turn it on.  I have driven it on days over 90 without any overheating issuers
  • Missing body molding on passenger side door and front clip
I have a few Youtube videos that I can send if requested showing the car starting up and driving.

Volkswagen hatches hotter GTI in Geneva

Tue, 05 Mar 2013

The all-new seventh-generation Volkswagen Golf hasn't even launched here in the United States, but over in Geneva, we're already getting our first glimpse at the hotter GTI hatchback. The fancy new Mk VII Golf is already off to a healthy start with positive reviews in Europe, and we have no doubt that this next GTI will work hard to regain its title as king of the hot hatches.
The big news for this generation of GTI is that for the first time ever, Volkswagen is actually offering two different power grades for the model, both relying on the 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four. Standard cars pack 220 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, but an optional performance pack ups the horsepower number to 230. Hitting 60 miles per hour takes 6.5 seconds (6.4 with the performance pack) and top speed is quoted at 153 mph (or 155 with the performance kit). Volkswagen will continue to offer the GTI with both six-speed manual and dual-clutch transmissions.
On the visual front, the sub-3,000-pound GTI adds the usual bit of hot hatch aggression over the standard Golf, and those changes carry over to the interior with a flat-bottomed wheel and, of course, plaid seats. She's certainly a looker, and while some of us do find the new Golf's design to be a bit staid and evolutionary, the enhancements for the GTI indeed tug on our enthusiast heart strings.

VW's Winterkorn tells 20,000 staffers of big cost-cutting plans

Thu, 24 Jul 2014

During a gathering of 20,000 Volkswagen Group employees at company headquarters in Wolfsburg, Germany on Wednesday, CEO Martin Winterkorn dropped a bombshell. The boss stated that the automaker isn't operating efficiently enough and admitted the company needs to radically start cutting back to raise its profit margins. To right the ship, Winterkorn has proposed killing off less profitable models and spending less on research and development.
According to Reuters, Winterkorn wants to raise the VW brand's profit margin from about 2.9 percent in 2013 to a target of 6 percent. To make that possible, his plan amounts to increasing cost cutting until Volkswagen reaches about 5 billion euros ($6.7 billion) per year to get things back in order. "Over the short-term, we urgently need more efficiency and higher profit," the CEO said during his speech, according to Reuters.
However, Winterkorn can't make these decisions unilaterally. Volkswagen's works council also has a seat on the supervisory board to represent laborers, and it isn't likely to take the proposed cuts sitting down.
