For sale! '81 Rabbit Pickup / Caddy 1.5L diesel. Previous owner (PO) said it was originally used by Canadian military. While I take that with a grain of salt, this is definitely a unique way to set up one of these. The bumpers, bed rails, and paint are all from before he or I got our hands on it.
My goal was to get it running, do some light restoration, & drive it. Sadly, that isn't an option anymore, as my daily (MKIV 24v GTI) needs some transmission love, and this truck aims to provide the needed funds. It could be worth someone else's time to give it the love it needs, or part it out - I'm working 2 jobs, & 50+ hours a week, so I don't have the time to do either. Includes a manual!
The good:
-It's an '81 diesel Caddy!
-New clutch, throw out bearing, & pressure plate
-It runs / ran (has sat for ~8 months, will attempt to start it when I get some free time to tinker with it)
-Axles rebuilt, all boots 100% new
-new tie rod ends & steering rack boots
-new shift bushings
-new (NOT used) tail lights
The "take it or leave it":
-interior needs love. or not.
-paint is not great, but, not terrible
-The wooden siderails on the bed have been taken off, will go with the truck
-Lift is on ~3" spacers / MK2 or MK3 shocks / springs (F), and an extra leaf spring (R).
-Tire size off by enough to mean +14.8% speed (50mph actual = 57.4mph displayed). Odometer will be off by ~148 miles / 1000.
-it has a stack
-No title (I believe NH doesn't require one for 10+ year old vehicles)
The bad:
-Needs some metalwork in typical places (rust! See pics.)
-few simple mechanical things.

Research shows the '81 North American Caddy as a 1.5 liter diesel with 48hp@5000rpm & 56.5ft-lb@3000rpm. If the model is, as stated by the PO, a Canadian model, it *could* be a 1.6 liter diesel. Further investigation for a specific engine code will have to be done to determine authenticity of the 1.6 liter claim. Code should be CK for 1.5D, CR for 1.6D, CY for 1.6TD.

Next Volkswagen Golf R to get 286 horsepower?
Tue, 12 Feb 2013The seventh-generation Volkswagen Golf hasn't launched in the United States just yet, but we're already setting our sights on the range-topping R model. According to Autocar, the next Golf R will be more powerful than the current version, producing 268 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque, making it the most powerful production Golf ever.
Powering the new Golf R will be a further evolution of Volkswagen's well-liked 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four, and when mated to a six-speed dual-clutch transmission, the hotter hatch will reportedly be able to sprint to 62 miles per hour in five seconds flat. That's over half a second quicker than the current US-spec model.
Other updates for the new Golf R include the addition of VW's Haldex 5 all-wheel-drive system found in the latest iteration of 4Motion. Furthermore, thanks to the use of lightweight materials, the new R is expected to weigh in around 2,650 pounds - that's a massive 675 pounds less than the current US-spec car. The exhaust has reportedly been reworked to provide more aural delight, as well.
VW builds 250,000th Passat in Chattanooga in just two years
Sun, 26 May 2013It hasn't been without incident or union organizing drive, but the Volkswagen plant in Chattanooga, TN has built its 250,000 Passat in just a little over two years. The Night Blue Passat TDI with black leather has come just two years and five weeks after the first customer car came off the line on April 18, 2011.
In the last year the plant operated at the 150,000-unit capacity that it was intended for, but the downturn in Passat sales and subsequent worker layoffs mean it will be a challenge to repeat the feat. The plant does have the world's largest solar park, though, and you can't take that away from them.
You'll find the official hand-clapping in the press release below.
VW to unveil diesel-electric Twin-Up! in Tokyo
Fri, 08 Nov 2013We've received multiple reports that Volkswagen will be bringing a diesel-electric concept to the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show, set to take place later this month. The car, called the Twin-Up!, is based on the Up! city car, with some sources claiming this is a thinly veiled concept that will eventually enter production.
According to Automotive News Europe, the Twin-Up! will reportedly return 214 miles per gallon on the US cycle by combining an 800-cc, two-cylinder diesel and an electric motor. It will also boast plug-in capabilities, and will be able to cover 30 miles on electric power alone.
Autocar has a more complete picture of the Twin-Up!'s powertrain, though, claiming it's a modified version of the hybrid system found in the Volkswagen XL1. The Twin-Up! will get a more potent, 47-horsepower electric motor to the XL1's 27-hp unit, but will retain that car's 47-hp turbodiesel. The battery pack will also grow, from 5.5 kilowatt hours to 8.6 kWh. Both of these increases are necessary due to the increased weight of the Twin-Up! - it's some 900 pounds heavier than an XL1.
