This truck is not something most people would consider driving to pick up a date. I did, and it was the best date of my life, but the body and interior are pretty rough.
That said, this truck is mechanically SOLID as described below, and I have most, if not all receipts.
Rebuilt:
Engine + clutch
Injector pump
Starter
Alternator
This truck starts up on the coldest day in February on the first try after sitting for two months. No smoke with great pickup. This thing ZIPS!
New (or relatively new):
Ball joints
Tie rod ends
CV boots
Timing belt
brake pads and shoes
Turned drums and rotors
shocks
Tires are in good shape
PLUS: comes with 35gal Greasecar fuel tank. I planned to convert it, but I moved and no longer drive the car.
History: Someone gave it to me in poor mechanical condition in 2005. I needed it for a film project in 2009, so I made the investment and spent the time to get it running right. I drove it for a year off and on after that.
Besides the cosmetics, here's what needs attention:
- Balljoint bolts need to be replaced with hardened steel bolts
- AC doesn't work
- fan/defrost noisy and only works on high
- AC compressor mounting is broken (The belt system works, but the AC bracket needs to be repaired or replaced with non-AC belt and mount.)
- odometer broken
-It's loud, but not unbearable; sounds like a leak in the exhaust between the header and muffler
I, or someone in my family, starts and drives the truck every couple months, though it does sit idle for long periods. I don't want to sell it, but it deserves more love and attention...
On May-27-13 at 18:47:43 PDT, seller added the following information:There is no stereo and someone else asked about rust. There is no structural rust to speak of other than average wear for the southern US, though the body has a few spots. It looks like someone did a poor job on the driver's side floor pan, though the pan itself is holding up fine.

2013 Volkswagen GTI Driver's Edition brings exclusivity to the granddaddy of hot hatches
Thu, 07 Feb 2013The Volkswagen booth at this year's Chicago Auto Show was filled with various special edition models of the Beetle and GTI. In addition to the GTI Wolfsburg Edition, the Volkswagen GTI Driver's Edition helps to wrap up the 2013 model year as VW readies the all-new MkVII Golf next year.
Only 3,000 of the GTI Driver's Edition models will be produced in four-door body style only, and the available color palette will be limited to just Candy White, Carbon Steel Gray and Deep Black. The package will come standard with the GTI's Sunroof and Navigation package, and it will add unique features such as the 18-inch "Laguna" wheels, a golf-ball shift knob, partial leather seats and red-stitching on the carpeted floor mats. Buyers of this package will also get a certificate of authenticity and some GTI swag such as a hat, keychain and parking sign.
Starting price for the 2013 Volkswagen GTI Driver's Edition is $29,695 with the six-speed manual and $30,795 if you choose the DSG - both prices exclude destination charges.
Volkswagen CrossBlue previews a three-row future, diesel-hybrid power [w/video]
Mon, 14 Jan 2013Volkswagen looks to be getting ready to jump into the large three-row crossover game. The automaker has officially pulled back the curtain on the CrossBlue Concept at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show.
Designers and engineers penned the machine specifically for the Canadian and US markets, and with a plug-in diesel electric hybrid drivetrain, the hulking five-door, at least in concept form, should offer substantially better efficiency than anything else on the market. The drivetrain pairs a 2.0-liter turbo diesel four-cylinder engine with two electric motors for a combined output of 305 horsepower and a ludicrous 516 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed dual-clutch gearbox handles shifting detail, while one electric motor spins the front wheels. The second motor spins the back axle independently, make the CrossBlue a through-the-road hybrid.
As a result, the crossover can pop to 60 mph in 7.2 seconds. Perhaps more impressively, the CrossBlue can whir around on all-electric propulsion for up to 14 miles at up to 75 mph. Once the diesel four kicks in, the drivetrain can yield up to 39 mpg, though Volkswagen says the hardware can hit 89 MPGe on a full charge thanks to a 9.8 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. Volkswagen Golf Variant Concept R-Line puts the sport in SportWagen
Wed, 06 Mar 2013With the introduction of the newest Volkswagen Golf Variant, we get an early look at what will most likely be the next-generation Jetta SportWagen here in the US. To further wet our appetities, VW is now teasing something a little sportier with the Concept R-Line. Looking the part of a GTI wagon (or a stretched Golf R), the Golf Variant Concept R-Line has a production-ready appearance that has us hoping we'll see this sporty wagon sooner rather than later.
The R-Line starts off with a new fascia that isn't quite as aggressive as the recently introduced GTI, but it gives the new styling some extra punch. Below the fascia is a lower splitter that visually carries back into the rocker panel extensions, and the rear of the car gets some bright exhaust tips and a rear diffuser. The Lapis Blue Metallic paint job probably does enough on its own to add a sporty flair to the Golf wagon, and it's all finished off with 18-inch split-spoke wheels. Inside, the Concept R-Line shows off sport seats wrapped in carbon leather featuring blue nappa inserts in the middle.
Rightfully so, VW brought the Concept R-Line to Geneva with its TDI and 4Motion all-wheel-drive system. A sporty, all-wheel-drive diesel wagon? Yes, please. Scroll down for the full press blast with all the details.
