'88 Metallic Blue, 5 Speed Manual Transmission, 138,000 Miles, Very Clean on 2040-cars

Year:1988 Mileage:138182
Location:

Harrison, New York, United States

Car starts every time, runs well, no smoke or colored exhaust.  I put about 12K miles on the car since I bought it in March '13 from Oskuie Service Center, Inc who specialize in Volvos.  I have used Mobil One oil and changed the oil every 3K.  Fun car to drive.  I had a 242GT when I was in High School and College and I bought this as a project.   I have really enjoyed this car, but my kids have been giving me grief about driving an "old car."  When I bought it, I thought my son, who turns 16 next month, would really like to drive it - but he is doesn't get it.

What I have done (about 6.5K in total invested):

New Voxx wheel and Michelin Primacy MXV4  (195/60 HR 15) tires in April '13 (approximately 12K on them).

New Michelin X-Ice Xi3 snow tires used only winter 13/14.

New Kenwood KDC-BT755HD car radio with Pioneer Speakers - bluetooth radio with remote, SeriusXM and Pandora.

Car re-sprayed factory Metallic Dark Blue in April '13.

New alternator in June '13.

New spare tire March '13.

Issues:

The a/c stopped working last summer.  A/c was serviced and converted to r134a before I bought the car.  I don't know what it will take to get it working.  Never brought the car in to get an estimate.

Drove back from the Cape last December in a nasty rain storm and had an issue with the engine hesitating at a certain rpm.  After I got home, I changed the spark plugs and the car ran fine.  Since then I have noticed a couple of hesitations - nothing that disables the car or causes it to stall.  It is like a hiccup every once in a while.

Driver's front seat adjustment large knob off - can use the small knob to adjust seat.

Missing the coin tray between seats but I have used that space as a cup holder for coffee/drinks.

Volvo finds a way to turn body panels into batteries [w/video]

Thu, 17 Oct 2013

One of the problems with designing an electric vehicle is figuring out where to fit the battery pack. Volvo - as a part of a European Union research project - is working on a way around this issue by replacing standard parts with lightweight components that double as batteries on both conventional and plug-in vehicles. The image above shows one such piece on a Volvo S80. While looking like nothing more than a carbon fiber plenum cover, the piece is actually a battery pack that can store and supply enough energy for the car's entire 12-volt power system.
The parts are made by sandwiching super capacitors (which can charge faster than standard batteries) in between layers of carbon fiber. They can then be formed to replace numerous body panels such as the decklid, roof or door panels. Volvo says that the replacing the body panels and batteries with these nano batteries can help reduce the vehicle's weight by as much as 15 percent. It has taken more than three years just to design the batteries, so there's no telling when, or if, we'll ever see this technology used on a production vehicle. Scroll down for a video and press release on Volvo's innovative battery technology.

Volvo C30 Polestar Concept hits the 'Ring

Mon, 05 Aug 2013

It's been over three years since the Volvo C30 Polestar Concept was unveiled, driven by journalists and, as it turns out, lapped around the Nürburgring with Scandinavian Touring Car Championship driver Robert Dahlgren behind the wheel. For whatever reason, the video of the 'Ring track session was only published by the tuning company yesterday. (Another discrepancy: Did Polestar's C30 lose 46 horsepower somewhere along the line? Because the video states that it has 405 hp, while the company's website quotes 451 hp...)
Whatever the case, the tuned Volvo is a beast, much more so than the similar-looking, 250-hp 2013 Volvo C30 Polestar Limited Edition that was sold last year. With 451 hp (sounds better than 405 hp, doesn't it?), all-wheel drive, limited-slip differentials front and rear and Öhlins dampers, the Polestar Concept checks all of the right boxes for us.
For some reason, the video, which you can watch below, seems a bit vanilla to us. Perhaps the overly dramatic music takes away from the action and the beautiful sounds of the turbocharged five-cylinder engine?

Polestar looking to tune Volvo CUVs

Sun, 19 Oct 2014

Volvo is getting serious about emerging from the fringes and into the mainstream of the luxury automobile market. But if it's going to challenge the Germans, it's going to need a performance line. And that's just what it's developing with Polestar.
Building on the motorsport partnership that has seen Polestar represent Volvo in the Scandinavian Touring Car Championship, World Touring Car Championship and V8 Supercars series, Polestar has been charged with developing road-going performance Volvos as well. It currently offers comprehensively tuned versions of the S60 and V60, as well as engine upgrades for other models, but the latest word has it that Polestar will turn its attention next to tuning Volvo crossovers like the XC60 and the new XC90, pictured above in top-spec R-Design trim.
Details on how Volvo would modify those models remain to be determined, but it wouldn't be much of a stretch to imagine the XC60 outfitted with similar enhancements to those offered on its sedan and wagon stablemates to mount a challenge to the Audi SQ5. As for the larger XC90, it seems Volvo is already squeezing as much out of its new 2.0-liter triple-charged inline-four as it can, but more aggressive handling, aero and brakes could stand to transform the flagship crossover in pursuit of performance utes like the Mercedes ML63 AMG and BMW X5 M, even if it couldn't quite match their impressive horsepower outputs.
