1996 Volvo 850 Estate
5 Speed Manual

My 855 needs a home & little love and seeing I don't really drive it anymore I figure I should stop paying insurance on it. This car has been super dependable for the 6 years I've owned it. It has never let me down, even when it should have. What I can say, it's a Volvo. Car starts right up and engine runs great. It has had regular maintenance & all major services. The clutch grabs nicely and the shifter is smooth. Brakes were all replaced within the last 15K miles. Radiator, hoses, and T-stat along with the ignition system(coil to plugs) were replaced around 35K miles ago. The entire exhaust, from the header to the muffler, was replaced about 40K miles ago.  I've tried to take care of this car and have used quality replacement parts from Scan-Tech and IPD in many areas. The paint is in solid shape as is the body. No visible rust and, aside from a large scrape on the left corner of the front bumper, has only 2 or 3 very minor dings(pictured). The interior is pretty shape, but it is a 17 year old car now so it has the standard 850 squeaks & rattles. The leather seats are great in the back, but the fronts do show cracking and general wear. All electronics work without a problem with one exception; the horn. I disconnected them 2 years ago as it would beep when I made full lock turns. I was told this was a common problem and was able to buy a repair kit. I just never got around to fixing it. I also have a tailgate panel repair kit to fix the rattle that happens to all these wagons. There's also an amplifier in the back. It's old, but it works if you want to use it.

Now the real issues. Like all used cars(specially 17 year old ones) there are some issues. The car desperately needs an alignment about a year ago now I hit a massive pot hole. This cost me a wheel and compromised the R/F strut. I was not really using the car and was already considering selling it at that time so I simply put on a steel wheel and replaced the one strut. When the work was being carried out I was told the rear trailing arms(delta link) bushings needed to be replaced in order to perform the alignment. This was also something I new was common to these cars and has sourced the OEM bushings and all bolts/hardware to replace them without replacing the entire delta link assembly(dealership repair method: $$$). Those parts, along with a number of OEM oil filters, anything else I find for the car will go with the sale. From looking at the tires I would say they could use replacing. The combination of having the alignment out of whack and the car generally just sitting have taken it's toll on them. They still have life, but definitely something to consider.

I've really loved this car and it has taken me on many adventures, but alas it's time to say goodbye. I work in NYC and use public transportation most of the time. I don't have a driveway and the car just jumps from spot to spot on the street. I simply cannot juggle 2 cars in my urban apartment life. Bottom line is I no longer need a vehicle this big and do not want keep paying for something I do not use. Due to that I cannot justify properly repairing the vehicle. She has a lot of life left in her though so I would really like to find someone who could write the next chapter in her story. I mean come on. It's an 850 with less than 200K miles. She's hit her stride and so much more to give.

Volvo promises new direct-injected diesels, 8-speed auto

Tue, 09 Apr 2013

As a part of eliminating its dependence on Ford platforms and powertrains, Volvo has previously announced information about its Volvo Engine Architecture (VEA) and Scalable Platform Architecture (SPA), but now we're finally getting some details about what will power some of the Swedish automaker's next-generation products.
The biggest key to VEA on the diesel engines is a new technology Volvo calls i-ART. This system uses unique injectors at each cylinder capable of monitoring fuel pressure and adjusting accordingly to maximize fuel economy and performance and reduce emissions. Looking ahead, Volvo says its four-cylinder engines will be able to offer the power of a six-cylinder and eventually, mixed with some sort of electrification, will be able to rival the performance of a V8 and "turn V8s into dinosaurs."
More details about the new diesel injection technology is posted in the press release below.

Volvo celebrates 20 years since 850 wagons came to BTCC

Wed, 30 Apr 2014

This year Honda Yuasa Racing brought a station wagon back to the ranks of competitors in the British Touring Car Championship (its drivers currently sit in third and fifth place in the Championship). In 1994, however, Volvo was the first team to run an estate in the series that's one of the best for delivering close racing.
Rickard Rydell and Jan Lammers drove the duo of 850 Estates prepped by Tom Walkinshaw Racing, lining up at Thruxton and proving that the rumors of a wagon in the series weren't a joke. The team used that year for development, getting the 2.0-liter, 290-horsepower, naturally aspirated five-cylinder engine ready for the next year's proper assault. The team's best finish over the 21 races was a fifth place, and they took 14th overall.
Rules changes led Volvo to switch to the 850 sedan the following year, but all the right noises had been made with the wagon. Rydell drive on to a third-place overall finish in 1995, three years later he claimed the Championship title. You'll find details and reminiscing from Rydell in the press release below, as well as the full video with scenes from the glory days.
