1964 Volvo 544 Sport

At the wee young age of 16, with a newly issued California driver’s license, I began tormenting my father with tireless pleas for to him to buy me a car.  He ultimately acquiesced on the condition that the car and I were delivered in the same year.  So with that I began to scour the classifieds searching for anything made in 1964.  I settled on a VW convertible bug in red – how perfect.  However, my wonderful eccentric father was more intrigued by the 1964 Volvo listed.  I had no desire for a “Volvo” – not teen fun at all.  However, we hopped in his car and drove to Laguna Beach and met an art dealer who happily showed us to the parking garage where this interesting 544 Sport awaited.  The bumpers and front grill were missing, the front seats were covered in old t-shirts and the car could not go in reverse.  “Not exactly what I had in mind,” I was thinking when my father shouted out, “We’ll take it!!”  So there begins my 34-year love affair with a car I affectionately call “The Picklet.”

“The Picklet” and I have been through a lot.  Through high school I quickly learned how to call the towing company, scour junkyards for old parts, and became fast friends with the geniuses at Swedish American Imports, who finally figured out how to get my car to backup.  The quirky car quickly became a favorite around town and I suddenly had a new sense of coolness.  In 1984, my Dad and I drove “The Picklet” from California to Missouri so I could get around campus at the University of Missouri where I was studying journalism.  By then “The Picklet” was becoming a bit unreliable for a student who needed to track down news stories across the state.  So into storage she went in St. Louis, where my boyfriend/finance arranged to have her restored once again.  On the eve of my wedding, he surprised me with a shiny, fully functioning car again.   But once the babies arrived, a car without seatbelts was of no use.  So we sadly put “The Picklet” into storage.

She has survived three moves with us and sits quietly under a cloth car cover in our three-car garage.  My father passed away 20 years ago and it has been hard to let go of the one thing that really brought us together.  But I have come to realize that I am not skilled at restoration or mechanics and just cannot foresee a time when I can properly care for this beautiful car or even really drive her.  It has taken me a year to finally get the courage to list “The Picklet.”  While not perfect, this car has so much potential and I am hoping that someone special will give her the retirement she deserves.

I don’t have the expertise to tell you what works and what doesn’t and what has been replaced and what hasn’t.  There’s been quite a bit of work over the years.  But the last time I drove her (six years ago), everything worked quite well.  This is not a show car, nevertheless, this is a car that has been safely stored and looks great.

The winning bidder will need to arrange for shipment and make a deposit through PayPal.  Please contact me if you have questions.

Volvo XC90 prototype spied for the first time ever

Mon, 03 Feb 2014

Despite its advanced age, the Volvo XC90 remains a highly competent luxury SUV. The design has aged nicely, and it's clear from the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety naming the big Volvo a Top Safety Pick + that the safety-minded Swedes behind it knew what they were doing. Still, even the finest cars need replacing, especially after nearly 12 years on sale.
Here we have the first spy shots of the next-generation XC90, under development somewhere cold (at this rate, it could be anywhere from Arvidsjaur to Atlanta). Now, as our spy photogs point out, this is the real deal, judging by all that camo over the vehicle. There's a production body under there, rather than this being a mule with the old vehicle's skin on top of it.
It's difficult to make out much because of all the camo, although there are some similarities to both the Concept XC Coupe from the Detroit Auto Show and a batch of teaser images we showed you earlier this year. We can see the greenhouse retains a shape similar to the current XC90, although the beltline climbs rather aggressively once past the C pillar, much like it does on the Concept XC Coupe. In back, Volvo has eschewed tall, vertical lights in favor of more conventional units, which we expect to be similar to what we saw in the teaser images. We'd bargain that there will be a traditional rectangular grille, like what you can see on the concept. The headlights, meanwhile, should wear T-shaped LED elements, like the teaser images.

Volvo finds a way to turn body panels into batteries [w/video]

Thu, 17 Oct 2013

One of the problems with designing an electric vehicle is figuring out where to fit the battery pack. Volvo - as a part of a European Union research project - is working on a way around this issue by replacing standard parts with lightweight components that double as batteries on both conventional and plug-in vehicles. The image above shows one such piece on a Volvo S80. While looking like nothing more than a carbon fiber plenum cover, the piece is actually a battery pack that can store and supply enough energy for the car's entire 12-volt power system.
The parts are made by sandwiching super capacitors (which can charge faster than standard batteries) in between layers of carbon fiber. They can then be formed to replace numerous body panels such as the decklid, roof or door panels. Volvo says that the replacing the body panels and batteries with these nano batteries can help reduce the vehicle's weight by as much as 15 percent. It has taken more than three years just to design the batteries, so there's no telling when, or if, we'll ever see this technology used on a production vehicle. Scroll down for a video and press release on Volvo's innovative battery technology.

Volvo Concept XC Coupe leaked [w/video] [UPDATE]

Tue, 07 Jan 2014

Last month, Volvo gave us a teaser of its new Concept XC Coupe, set to debut at the Detroit Auto Show. And now, just a few days before the doors open at Cobo Hall, leaked images of the stylish new crossover showcar have leaked online, courtesy of CarBuyer.co.uk.
The Concept XC Coupe is a sort of high-riding successor to the very attractive Concept Coupe that wowed us at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show. With its burlier dimensions and hatchback configuration, the Concept XC gives us a better glimpse at Volvo's new styling direction, which is expected to debut in production form on the next-generation XC90 crossover. We've already seen some leaked sketches of the new XC90, and it sure does look like this Concept XC.
We don't have any further details about the Concept XC Coupe, but from the images, we can see that it will use a four-passenger seating configuration, with rear seats that fold flat. There are also exterior badges for surround radar and a 360-degree camera system, suggesting some new safety tech fitting of safety-minded brand.
