BIRKIN HISTORY

The Birkin S3 sports car is essentially a reproduction of the Lotus 7 Series 3, originally manufactured by Lotus Cars UK in 1968. The Birkin S3 fits into a niche market for classic cars of the "7" variety, of which there are numerous derivatives. Most of these are only broadly similar to the original Lotus in cosmetic appearance, and differ significantly in technical construction.

Birkin's S3 is one of only two reproductions worldwide, that bear any real resemblance to the original Lotus, although both have been re-engineered to offer substantially improved performance & handling along with providing better occupant safety.

The Birkin is considered by many to be the premier Super 7 on the market and this particular car represents one of the higher performance versions. We have owned more than 1/2 dozen "7 type" cars ranging from vintage 7's to Caterham's and everything in between. They epitomize the true sports cars of the 1960's and are incredibly fun to drive offering unbelievable handling. The problem with the earlier cars is that they are underpowered with horsepower ratings as low as 80~bhp. While the lower horsepower "7's" cars can still be relatively quick as a result of decent power to weight ratios, the higher horsepower more sophisticated "7" Tribute cars (Birkin's, Caterham's, etc.) are an absolute blast and offer tremendous acceleration, excellent stopping power and phenomenal handling.

With an estimated 180~ horsepower and a weight of just over 1100 lbs. this Brikin has a power to weight ratio of 6.1 lbs per horsepower. Here's something to consider: The Bugatti Veyron weighs in at 4,486 lbs. and produces a staggering 987 hp for a weight / hp ratio of 4.5 lbs. per hp. This Birkin weighs just over 1,000 lbs with a power plant producing in the neighborhood of 180~ hp for a weight to horsepower of 6.1 lbs. per hp. And, remember, the Bugatti is one of the fastest cars on the planet.impressive, to say the least! Another comparison?? The BMW I35 comes in at a ratio of 11.24 lbs. per hp, not even close to the Birkin's performance.

THIS PARTICULAR BIRKIN "SUPER 7"

The Birkin S3 has just been proven to be very reliable and has received regular care and maintenance by its previous owners. Unlike examples that are used very occasionally or stored for prolonged periods of time, this car has been driven a few thousand miles per year receiving the necessary maintenance and care by its particular owners. While we considered keeping this particular car for our personal use (we are long time "7" / Lotus enthusiasts) we simply do not find the time to use the Birkin (or our other cars, for that matter!) and have decided that it is time to reduce our collection of classic and collectible cars. All parts for the Birkin along with technical advice are readily available through local (USA) sources so maintenance and service is a non-issue considering the availability of all parts from USA suppliers.

Birkin cars vary considerably not only in terms of power plants but, perhaps most importantly, build quality. They range from "home builds" assembled by those with limited mechanical talent, to professionally assembled, high quality cars that approach production car quality (and, in many cases are very high). This Birkin falls into the latter category and is a "7" that was produced by the factory as a "roller", less major drive-line components. Upon its arrival in the USA the car was fitted with a UK built, Paul Dunnell 2.0 liter engine and other related parts.

Cosmetically this car is very good, as the photos reflect. The brilliant paint (painted by the factory) is referred to as "Transparent Blue", a high metallic color that is offset with a traditional stripe in silver. The carbon fibre fenders are painted with clear coat that has a slight blue tint making them dark "blue/black for an incredible contrast and striking overall appearance. Flaws are minimal but include the typical minor chips/nicks from road use. When delivered, the car will come with new carbon fibre rear fender guards installed (ordered but not received at this writing).

Another reality of the Birkin Super 7, or any Super 7 for that matter, is ongoing maintenance and upkeep. Often times the cars are driven hard but not well cared for and sold when they are in need of considerable work or are weak mechanically. The old adage "rode hard and put away wet" comes to mind.

This Birkin is not only extremely well built having been owned by one of the premier Caterham / Birkin dealers in the country but is fitted with a desirable, higher horsepower Paul Dunnell engine and T-9 5 speed gearbox. The Birkin's chassis and brakes can handle this power and the result is blistering acceleration and tremendous handling. At just over 1,100 lbs. and estimated 180 HP, the "7" offers incredible overall performance and equally good braking. According to some estimates, 0-60mph times are in the mid 4 second range.

This example is fitted with the more reliable fuel injection, not the somewhat "finicky" twin DCOE45 Weber carburetors, Panasport wheels & Toyo stock suspension along with recent fluid service and 3-point belts / harnesses. The engine bay is clean and the undercarriage straight and showing only the normal patina of road use. While the phrase "Turn-Key" is often times misused, it is the best definition for this "7." The car is ready for either aggressive street use or track time or a combination of both. It is the ideal high performance 7 that is docile enough to use on the street and a car that will, frankly, embarrass many other so called "Super Cars" even when it is being driven even by a relatively inexperienced driver.

Some of the many upgrades and items included with the Birkin include:

- Paul Dunnell built (Google dunnellengines) 2.0 liter 180+~ hp twin cam 16 valve with throttle body fuel injection

We will be glad to discuss the details of licensing a unique vehicle in your state / country.

- We will consider trades for vehicles that are a good fit for our business model including sports, high performance and unique vehicles of the late 1950's to early 1970's (Domestic & European).

MISCELLANEOUS GENERAL INFORMATION

- We will be glad to provide additional detailed photographs of any part of the car to serious, prospective buyers. We will need your direct email address in order to send high quality photos.

- We have been shipping vehicles for years and have established excellent contacts that are not only high quality but very price competitive. Call us or email for a quote directly to your home or office.

- In addition to the purchase price of the vehicle, California buyers will be subject to sales tax, documentation fee, DMV transfer fees and license/registration. - We encourage telephone calls to discuss this vehicle in greater detail. Also, if you would prefer that we call you to answer any questions about the vehicle; shipping alternatives, etc. please e-mail us with your telephone number and will gladly get back in touch with you.

We make every effort to accurately represent our vehicles, and highlight both positive items as well as areas that require attention. We ask that prospective buyers consider our eBay history/feedback, standing in the community, length of time in business, and other factors when purchasing a collectible vehicle from Classic Cars Ltd.

Please keep in mind that minor cosmetic issues/flaws are present on virtually every vehicle (regardless of age) including small chips, nicks, scratches, etc. on both the exterior and interior and are part of purchasing a relatively new, used "pre-owned" vehicle. Frankly, often times the photos make the vehicle appear to be in flawless condition and do not show the minor flaws or imperfections that may exist.

The information contained in this description is believed to be accurate but, in some instances, has been provided by previous owners and/or outside sources. As a result, we are unable to guarantee the accuracy of the information. We encourage verification of any information prior to the purchase of any vehicle that you are considering.

PURCHASING A COLLECTOR VEHICLE - THINGS TO CONSIDER

As always, we recommend that you carefully review the seller's background of any collector car being sold over the Internet. We believe that it is important to ask yourself a number of questions including, but not limited to:

- How long have they been in business?

- How much experience do they have with collector cars?

- How many positive collector car vehicle sales have completed (positive eBay feedback)?

- How detailed/complete is the description of the vehicle?

- Do the photos show details of the interior, exterior, top, chrome, etc. or are they simply "Glamour Shots" taken from a distance?

- Does the seller have a Surety Bond to protect the financial transaction?

- What about insurance, licensing by the state, and a local business license?

- Does the seller (if a business) have any DMV (Motor Vehicle) complaints and/or other history of legal action, grievances?

- Does the seller enjoy a favorable local and national/international reputation?

- Can the seller assist with funding sources, transport and out of state/country sales?

On Feb-14-14 at 17:33:29 PST, seller added the following information:

Please Note: The eBay ad accurately describes the Birkin "7" as a 2004 model year and the car is titled as a 2004.  However, at the beginning of the description, there is a typo that shows the car as a '2014'....this is incorrect. Our apologies for the error.
