Body, Trim and Paint

Having resided in California until 2006, the body of this desirable short wheelbase 912 remains in very solid condition. Hood, doors and rear engine lid all close nicely with very nice gaps. Each body panel is very straight with only one very small and shallow ding on the right rear quarter panel. Majority of the undercarriage is original and solid with only one small patch at the front passenger floor.  There is also  some rust in the battery tray.

Majority of the trim is in good original condition. The right front turn signal lens is cracked and faded, but a new lens will be installed prior to the car's delivery to new owner. Weatherstripping was replaced during the  repaint and remains in very good condition. All glass is in good condition. Windshield was replaced during repaint. Headlight glass is good. Left tail light lens has a small crack, right tail light lens in fine. All chrome parts are original and shine up nicely.

The car is currently wearing one professional repaint in it's original and attractive paint color of Bahama Yellow (color code 6605).  Windows and body trim were likely removed prior to the repaint as there is no overspray on any of the trim. The paint remains in very good condition with only a few minor blemishes.

Interior

The majority of black leatherette interior is in fair original condition. The door panels have not been cut up with speaker installations as is so commonly seen.  Front seats were restored at some time and remain very supportive with some minor wear showing on the driver seat. Most of the original carpet is still present with the carpet on the back of the rear seat back showing the most wear. The gauges and switches on the face of the dash are all present and are original. This 912 was sold with a rare factory wood steering wheel which looks very attractive with the Bahama Yellow paint and Black interior color combination. The headliner is original with some stains in areas.

Electricals

Headlights (low and high beams), tail lights, brake lights,  turn signals,  hazard light switch, windshield wipers, windshield washers and even the cigar lighter are functional.  This 912 was ordered with an optional rear speaker which functions fine with the Blaupunkt AM/FM stereo. Horn is not currently functional, but may be just an old rubber horn cup which will be replace. The starter and generator are functioning fine. A rebuilt Bosch starter and relay were installed at 92,693 miles. The speedometer and odometer are functional and current mileage is 93,962 miles. Tachometer and fuel gauge are functional. Oil temp gauge is currently not functioning. Emergency brake, generator and low fuel warning lights are functional. A correct sized  12 volt battery is installed.

Engine and Transmission

The engine is the original numbers matching 1600cc (number 754967, type number 616/36). Service records document a professional engine rebuild completed within the last 1300 miles (@92,693 miles). Great to see that the original Solex PII-4 carburetors are installed and were rebuilt. 912's definitely drive nicer with a nice pair of original Solexes, instead of the common Weber replacements. A set of 86mm pistons were installed for additional power. A scan of the engine rebuild record is included in the photo album. The engine starts easily and accelerates smoothly with excellent power. There is no smoking on startup or during hard acceleration.

The original four speed transmission shifts smoothly with  no grinding in any gear. Service records document that new gear shift bushings and boots were installed within the last 1300 miles (@92,693 miles).

Suspension, Wheels, Tires and Brakes

The suspension rides  well and has that responsive and light feel that makes the short wheelbase 912 so desirable. Service records document the following suspension related repairs:

@92,693 miles - replaced RF ball joint, replaced outer tie rod ends, repacked front wheel bearings, set toe in

The original 1967 date coded 15" chromed wheels are currently installed and are in good condition.  The spare wheel is also a correct 15" chromed steel wheel.

Service records document that four brand new 195/65HR-15 sized Granada HP All Season radial tires were installed last August at 93,778 miles. So there are only 200 miles on the new tires.

The brakes are in very good condition. Service records document the following suspension related repairs:

@92,693 miles - took apart and cleaned front calipers

@92,274 miles - installed new rear brake rotors, calipers and pads

The emergency brake is adjusted correctly and holds tight.
