This 1991 BMW 850i represents the cutting edge technology at the time of its production. Under its finely sculpted hood is an aluminum block 5.0L/296 HP V-12 with the first drive by wire throttle system ever used in a regular production vehicle. This finely engineered engine is mated to a 4 speed automatic transmission. An active 5-link rear suspension and electronic stability control, also one of the industry's first, keep the 850i in control even at its limit. The interior offers a wide array of amenities including dual zone climate control, power tilt and telescoping steering wheel and a multi speaker stereo system. Capping off all of those goodies is the fact that the 850i is one of the best looking German cars of the last 50 years making it one desirable grand touring machine. This 850i Coupe is Calypso Red Metallic, though the paint has some scratches and dings. The hood has been repainted at some time. The driver's seat bolster has some slight wear. The sunroof has been disabled and the driver's seat height control only lifts one side of the seat. This fine BMW runs and drives smooth. The matching Bridgestone Potenza tires show lots of tread and the two batteries are about 2 years old. The Auto Check and Carfax reports both show NO accidents. Two rare Alpina BMWs given the Petrolicious treatment
Tue, 22 Jan 2013Alpina is getting more and more ink because of because of that rolling cannonade known as the B7 and its closer ties with BMW. The company's tuning business dates to 1962 when Burkard Bovensiepen began fiddling with Weber carburetors, then his company began racing in 1968 and was eventually certified as an automaker in 1983.
Two of its rarer specimens from those early years have gotten a glance from the folks at Petrolicious: the E24 B10 and E24 B7S. Based on the BMW 6 Series, the Alpina versions made one of the most special coupes from the Eighties even more so. According to the video, there were only 44 B10s made, and the turbocharged, 333-horsepower B7S - this was in a luxury coupe in 1982, mind you - saw only 33 examples produced.

The Homer to contest 24 Hours of LeMons
Thu, 27 Jun 2013It's finally happened. A 24 Hours of LeMons team has built the definitive interpretation of The Homer from The Simpsons for competition in an upcoming race. As you may recollect, The Homer is the fictional car designed by Homer Simpson for his brother's car company. Designed with a separate compartment for screaming children and other Homer-centric goodies, the animated machine bankrupted its parent company and put Homer's brother out of a job. Now we get to watch it race other crap cans as it tackles Southern California's Buttonwillow Raceway on June 29. Scott Chamberlain, Kris Linquist, Reid Conti, Ben Reilly and Mike Yepes will helm the machine, and Jeff Herman serves as the team's creative director.
The racer is the latest incarnation of a well-abused BMW 3 Series. The team campaigned the same E30 under the "Prickstine" banner as a Chrysler Imperial tribute and "Porcubimmer," the latter being a riff on the ever-popular joke about the difference between porcupines and BMW models. BMW puts a sheep in wolf's clothing with 2 Series Active Tourer M Sport
Thu, 27 Mar 2014BMW is charting new territory with the 2 Series. No, not the two-door model - that's just the kind of rear-drive coupe for which the brand is known. But the Active Tourer (which only shares its series designation with the coupe) is a front-drive tall hatchback/MPV category buster, and that's not exactly what comes to mind when you think of Bimmers. As such, the 2 Series Active Tourer is bound to turn off some of the brand's faithful, but this latest M Sport kit could at least ease the pain somewhat.
The sport package for the Active Tourer packs all the usual suspects: a more aggressive aero kit, retuned suspension, blacked-out grille, 17- or 18-inch alloys and an interior with sports seats trimmed in blue-stitched Alcantara. Top all that off with an Estoril Blue paint job and you've got a compact family hauler that might look the part, and maybe handle a bit tighter, yet it naturally stops short of the full M treatment (or even an M Performance spec like you'd find in the M235i coupe). All of which is probably just as well, because that might be the only thing BMW purists would object to more than the existence of a front-drive BMW MPV in the first place.
