1978 Lotus 'eclat on 2040-cars
San Antonio, Texas, United States
This is a very nice 1978 Lotus Eclat S1. It has The very sought after Buick 215 V8 Conversion mated to a recently re freshened Borg Warner 5 Speed Transmission. This car is worth more than double what I'm asking for but since I got a new toy this one has to go.
The body and paint are not show quality; however it is very decent. There are no signs of major accidents or damage repair. Underneath the car looks very solid with no rust problems. There are lots of the typical cosmetic Lotus stress cracks in the fiberglass body and also lots of chips, scratches and touch ups but overall the car still looks quite nice. This Eclat also has the desired and hard to find Euro bumpers. The gauges all work with the exception of the speedometer. I use a GPS with MPH read-out that gives me accurate speed readings. The fuel gauge and low fuel level light works as they should. The power windows work as they should as well. The headlights work and the pods go up and down as they should. Turn signals work but the switch needs replacement as the high beams are inoperable. Horn works. The Engine is in good condition. I recently sent the transmission to a reputable transmission shop here in San Antonio to install a synchro kit and change all gaskets and o rings. The trans shifts through the gears as it should and is very solid. The cooling and charging systems work great. There is a full size spare tire that matches the rest of the tires. It has Spax adjustable shocks (need replacing) in the front and back. The steering and suspension are ok and the car rides nicely. . The car has never left me stranded on the side of the road or anything but I do need to stress that this is an older Lotus and should not be used as someone dependable transportation unless they have the knowledge base these old cars require. I ask any potential bidders to please research these cars and understand old british systems such as Lucas electrics and the like. Overall this is a nice looking and fair driving example of a great classic British car. It has a clear Title in my name and is currently licensed in Texas. I know Im missing something so please ask questions and I will answer when I can (usually evenings). The car stereo stereo seen in the pics has been removed. |

Lotus suing former CEO Bahar over spending on homes, helicopters and watches
Mon, 03 Dec 2012More details have come out about the legal suit and countersuit being contested between Lotus cars owner DRB-Hicom and former CEO of Lotus Dany Bahar. Bahar was brought in by Malaysian car company Proton in 2009 to turn Lotus around, and events during his tenure have made just about everyone wonder "What's going on?" That's not unusual - it can take a minute to figure things out when a new leader takes everything in a new direction - but in this case the clouds didn't clear quickly enough.
When the Malaysian government sold Proton to Malaysian auto supplier DRB-Hicom earlier this year, a forensic accounting team from Ernst & Young and The Rothschild Group started going over the books. Not long after, Bahar was suspended in June from his position and then fired. In his countersuit against DRB-Hicom, claims of lavish spending began to surface. Then the stories and leaks and rumors really began, the UK's Financial Mail reporting on more than one million pounds spent on private flights and home renovations, the New Zealand Herald talking about other executives sacked so that DRB could rearrange a 270-million-pound bank loan to Lotus, and rumors on forums about Bahar flying from his home in Norfolk to Hethel HQ and spending 30,000 pounds on motorsports books for his office.
In the latest Bloomberg report it is said that DRB-Hicom seeks 2.5 million pounds ($4 million US) from Bahar "for unauthorized expenses and overpaid salary and bonuses," including the purported expense of 3,000 pounds on watches for company managers. DRB-Hicom also says Bahar made damaging statements to the media, on top of breaching his contractual duties. Bahar's countersuit seeks $10.6 million from DRB-Hicom.
Lotus slated to stop selling Evora in US
Mon, 22 Sep 2014It's been three years now since Lotus stopped selling the Elise and Exige in North America, leaving the Evora as its only model available Stateside. But according to the latest from Car and Driver, even that model is on its way out.
The problem reportedly comes down to air bags. Lotus was granted a temporary exemption from fitting the latest-generation smart airbags to the Evora, but that exemption is set to expire at the end of the year. And once it does, Lotus apparently has no intention of developing and fitting the proper equipment to allow it to continue selling the Evora in the United States.
Once the Evora is gone from our market, Lotus will be reduced to selling only track-bound versions of the Elise and Exige in the US, so the prospect of actually buying a new Lotus and driving off the dealer lot will vanish into thin air.
Lotus team out of Le Mans, full driver list published
Tue, 20 May 2014We can scratch off one more car from the list for the 2014 24 Hours of Le Mans. The Lotus T129 LMP1 car has been dropped from the entry list of the 82nd running of the historic race, with organizers citing "a lack of preparation" as the reason. On a more positive note, the list of 168 drivers in 56 vehicles has been officially published for the June 14 race.
Like the Lotus team currently in Formula One, the Lotus T129 uses the iconic British brand's name and colors but is actually built by a separate company. It previously ran a Lola chassis in the LMP2-class (pictured above). The Le Mans organizers claim the car will likely be on display during the 24-hour race, but it won't make it's competition debut until the World Endurance Championship round at the Circuit of the Americas in September. The T129 is being replaced by an Oreca 03 chassis with Nissan power in the LMP2 class, entered by Millennium Racing.
The Lotus' retirement came as the teams had to send in the names of the three drivers nominated to race each car. This year there are racers from 26 countries with the most coming from France (39), Britain (29), the US (17) and Italy (15). The latest tally of entries breaks down to 9 LMP1s, 19 LMP2s, 9 LM GTE Pros, 18 LM GTE Ams and the Nissan ZEOD RC as the experimental Garage 56 entry.
