1968 Oldsmobile 442 Convertible Tribute

I have owned several 442's over the past decade. This time I wanted to build a car that looked mostly stock, but performed much better than a stock 442. I have also owned and like numbers matching original cars. For that reason, I decided I did not want to modify a true 442 to this extent.

However, every effort was put into building this car to look just like a 68 442 convertible. Without looking at the vin, you could never tell this car started life as a Cutlass S.

Examples:

Original 68 442 rear bumper with cutouts for the exhaust (not re manufactured)
Dash pin stripes (one year only in 1968)
68 12 bolt (Olds) POSI rear-end with 3:42 gears from a 68 or 69 442 W-30 car (per the casting numbers)
68 grill
All 442 emblems correct and in the correct location, even the truck rocket emblem that is specific to a 442 convertible.
Turbo 400 transmission (completely rebuilt, now with higher speed stall converter and mild shift kit. (nice to drive but the shifts are very crisp when on the gas)
Optional 442 rally stripes on front fenders (however the stripes are painted on in a way that you can not feel or see the edge of the painted stripe)
442 front and rear sway bars
Boxed in lower rear control arms

New brakes, front disk, rear drum
New Tie Rod ends A-arm bushings front and rear, shocks, ball joints, etc.
W-27 aluminum rear end cover (not correct for 68 442, but looks good).

Other:

All new interior including door panels, seat foam, covers, carpet, plastic seat backs, arm rest...etc. The dash and sun visors are original and are in great shape with no cracks or discoloration.
All new convertible top, including new interior liner and power top motor.
New convertible boot that matches interior
New wood steering wheel with Olds rocket emblem in the center
CD/MP3 player professional mounted in glove box
Alpine speaker hidden in kick panels
Sony AMP mounted in truck

No expense was spared during this restoration. The car was media blasted down to bare metal and all rust was removed for good. Although the car was originally in good condition. As you can see from the pictures, the car is laser strait, including the hood, trunk and door gaps. The car was block sanded several times to ensure it turned out to be laser strait. The paint job is fantastic. High end PPG paint was used by the body/paint shop. There are several coats of clear on the car in the event a scratch would need to be buffed out. I also had a shop remove the dents out of all the stainless trim and professionally polish it at the same time the chrome (bumpers) were being re-finished. In addition to the motor being rebuilt, all other mechanical components were rebuilt or replaced, including starter (after market high torque), battery (Optima), alternator, voltage regulator, battery cable and other wiring, hoses, windshield..etc. There really is just to much to list and I'm sure I'm missing a bunch. I tried to take some pictures under the car, but I do not own a lift. I believe the painter told me he shot the bottom of the car and frame with POR-15 or something like POR-15. It was a PPG product as this is all they use.

There are also two sets of wheels that go with the car. The 15 inch wheels shown in the pictures (for a restomod look) and 14 inch Olds Rally wheels. Both sets of wheel have BF Goodrich Radial T/A tires with about 99 percent of the tread left on them.

I have never had the car or motor on a dyno, but it certainly out performs any of the other 442's, Chevelles or muscle cars I have owned over the years. However, the car was built to be driven on the street. As an example, the cam has a nice lope to it at idle, but we made sure it was not so radical that the power brakes would be effected. I don't want to even guess how much I spent on restoring this car, I know the paint/body shop bill was about $15,000 alone.

The power windows on the car can be slow to go up or down when the weather is colder. Also, for the past few years I've noticed the transmission will leak when the car has been sitting for a long time. I have never driven the car in the winter, colder months or when there is gravel on the roads. But I do start it about once a month during the winter. Finally, either the heater door is stuck shut or the heater control slider cable is stuck as it does not want to move. I never cared, as I said, I never drove the car in the cold weather. Regardless, the car is being sold "as is" so if you have questions please ask them via ebay email before bidding. Since the car was finished, I have put maybe 2000 miles on it going to car shows and cruise nights. I have no idea what the actual millage is on the car.

I've tried to describe the car the best and as honestly as I can. I know its not a 100 point concourse restoration show car (whatever that means). But it has won a number of local car shows. It get a ton of looks when ever I take it out of the garage and the performance will shock anyone who assumes its a stock 442. Overall its a really really nice car that deserves to be driven and enjoyed.

Unfortunately this car came out exactly as I wanted it to be (l love the color combo), but for financial reasons I'm now forced to sell it. I do have it listed locally and reserve the right to end the Ebay listing early if the car has not met the auction reserve price.

Ferrari FF pitted against Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser in crazy Generation Gap comparison

The folks behind Generation Gap have lost their minds with this latest video. The goal here is to determine the ultimate family cruiser, but the choices are what you would least expect, with a heavily modded 1970 Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser going up against a 2012 Ferrari FF.
You might anticipate an over-40-year-old Oldsmobile to pale in comparison to any modern Ferrari, but this wagon has a ton of secrets under its skin thanks to Lingenfelter. First, it packs a supercharged LS3 V8 with a claimed 650 horsepower and a six-speed manual gearbox. That big upgrade in power is further helped with air suspension and massive Wilwood disc brakes. The result is nothing short of deafening, with blaring yelps whenever the driver even nudges the accelerator.
The alternative sounds just as good, albeit in very different way. The Ferrari's 6.3-liter V12 pumps out 651 hp and 504 pound-feet with a part-time all-wheel drive system. While the FF lacks a lot of the hauling ability of the Olds, it makes up for the deficit in handling, luxury, and in many eyes, simply by having the famous prancing horse on the grille.

If you have a need to relive the 1970s, then here is the vehicle for you. This groovy blast from the past is a 1976 GMC Motorhome currently for auction in Florida on eBay Motors, and it is one green machine - just not in the modern sense.
The seller claims that this beast has had just two owners and has covered a mere 61,308 miles in its decades on the road. It's reportedly never been restored or repainted and comes with all of the necessary books and manuals. A 7.5-liter (455-cubic-inch) Oldsmobile V8 with a three-speed Turbo-Hydramatic automatic transmission powering the front wheels propels this far-out RV, and the double set of rear wheels out back use a self-leveling air suspension to provide a cushy ride.
The purported low miles and good condition really make this GMC a stand out, though. The exterior combination of lime stripes and beige with just a touch of green is like nothing else on the road today. Plus, the polished bumpers and wheels make it all pop. Inside, it's even better with monochromatic green upholstery and shag carpet. It features everything you'd ever need on a long trip, including a bathroom, kitchenette and lots of seating. The only hint of modernization is an HD TV next to the stove, but its size is a perfect fit for the hole there.

GM recalling 8.4M cars, 8.2M related to ignition problems

General Motors today announced a truly massive recall covering some 8.4 million vehicles in North America. Most significantly, 8.2 million examples of the affected vehicles are being called back due to "unintended ignition key rotation," though GM spokesperson Alan Adler tells Autoblog that this issue is not like the infamous Chevy Cobalt ignition switch fiasco.
For the sake of perspective, translated to US population, this total recall figure would equal a car for each resident of New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Montana, Delaware, South Dakota, Alaska, North Dakota, the District of Columbia, Vermont and Wyoming. Combined. Here's how it all breaks down:
7,610,862 vehicles in North America being recalled for unintended ignition key rotation. 6,805,679 are in the United States.
