1986 Pontiac Fiero Gt with a 350 V8 Conversion. One bid buys it.

The conversion was completed by the person I purchased the vehicle from.  He used the kit from V8 archie.  I have owned the car for 5 years.  I was told the engine was a rebuilt 350 from a 1990 Camaro. He also added a shift kit to the transmission.  There is nothing custom to the engine accept for a K&N air filter. He also replaced the rubber bushings with poly bushings and added a sway bar.  The A/C and cruise were both removed for the install and never put back in.  I have a box of parts that go with the car and might contain the parts needed to install the A/C and cruise control.

Since I have owned the car I have had the injectors replaced with larger injectors, the transmission lines were replaced, the radiator was replaced, added a Rodney Dickman trunk support,  and replaced the TPS sensor.  The doors rattled over bumps so I replaced the door strikers and that solved the problem.  I had the tachometer calibrated for the V8

The lights go up and down no problem, all the gauges work, the sunroof doesn't leak and the headliner doesn't sag.  The seats are in great shape accept for a coffee stain on the passenger side. The dash is not cracked and the carpet looks new.  The power windows work but go up and down slow.  The power locks work but sometimes it takes a couple of tries.

The paint is original and looks ok but it could use a respray or color change.  There are a couple of chips on the hood from when I was putting it back on after removing the radiator.  Recently the car began surging and running rich when started but comes out of it after a few minutes.  I am not getting an engine code but do not have the time to chase the problem.

I am selling the car because I am a new Dad and just don't have the time or money to enjoy the car.  I have put about 100 miles on it in the last two years.  It is time to let someone else enjoy it.  I do not have the title but I will get a new one if the winning bidder requires it.  Also, Maine doesn't have emission control requirements so I couldn't say if it would pass or not.  The car is inspected, insured and drives if you are close enough to come look at it.

I have tried to explain the car as best as I can.  As with any car that is 30 years old there may have been things I have missed so ask questions and I will answer them.  I can also get additional pictures and video of the car running if you like.

Looking back at Oprah's free-car giveaway 10 years later

Fri, 12 Sep 2014

Oprah kicked off her 19th season in dramatic fashion by giving all 276 members of the studio audience a free car.
Molly Vielweber's Pontiac G6 appears unremarkable at first glance. It wears forest green paint, rolls on five-spoke aluminum wheels, and it has a sizeable scrape in the driver's side door, the scar of a decade's worth of hard use. You wouldn't notice it parked at a big box store or cruising on the highway. Pontiac made hundreds of thousands of G6s in the 2000s, and a lot are still on the road. It's unremarkable in every way except for the front license plate, which reads, "Oprah 6."

2008-2009 Pontiac G8 recalled over airbag concern

Mon, 07 Nov 2011

General Motors is recalling around 38,000 Pontiac G8 sedans from its 2008 and 2009 model years. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that the cars may have a passenger-side airbag flaw that might prevent proper deployment in certain scenarios.
According to NHTSA, the airbag might not adequately protect a fifth percentile woman - that is, a woman around four-foot, 11-inches weighing 108 pounds. The New York Times indicates that the anomaly was found during a crash test conducted by GM's Australian branch, Holden, which was testing the G8's twin (read: Commodore) for head injuries. According to that report, the test in question is specifically tailored to simulate injuries to females, so the results do not apply to men or children.
The issue has been blamed on a seat position sensor that governs airbag deployment rates. NHTSA indicates that when the front passenger seat is moved all the way forward, the faulty sensor may inappropriately trigger a 30-millisecond delay between airbag stages, potentially leading to greater injuries.

GM knew about fatal Chevy ignition problem decade before recall

Fri, 21 Feb 2014

Well, this is not good for General Motors. Following a report last week that GM was recalling 778,000 Chevrolet Cobalt and Pontiac G5 compacts over concerns that the ignition could switch out of the "run" position without warning, USA Today reports that the Detroit-based behemoth knew about the issue, which affected 2005 to 2007 Cobalts (the Cobalt shown above and in the gallery is from 2010) and 2007 Pontiac G5s, all the way back in 2004.
The information comes from a deposition in a civil lawsuit against GM, obtained by USA Today, which claims that a GM engineer experienced the issue while the then-new model was undergoing testing. The issue was "solved" when a technical service bulletin was issued in 2005, informing dealers to install a snap-on key cover on the cars of customers who complained about the issue. According to the Cobalt's program engineering manager, Gary Altman, the cover was an "improvement, it was not a fix to the issue."
The case where the depositions were made was from 2010, and involved Brooke Melton, a 29-year-old pediatric nurse in Georgia who was killed on her birthday. At the time, police claimed she was going too fast on a wet, rural road, although it later came out through the black box that her car's ignition had come out of the "run" position at least three seconds before the accident (the max amount of time a black box records before a wreck), disabling her airbags, power steering and anti-lock brakes. According to USA Today, police said Melton was "traveling too fast for the roadway conditions," although it's impossible to know if she'd have been in the wreck, which injured the occupants of another vehicle, had her 2005 Chevy not shut off. GM settled the Melton family's case, although the details remain confidential.
