1979 Pontiac Trans Am

This is a very original Red/Black 1979 Pontiac Trans Am with the V8 301 engine, 4 BBL and Turbo 350 automatic transmission. This well-cared-for Trans Am operates very close to the way it did the day it left the showroom floor -- it will definitely take you back instantly 30 years.  The car is equipped with 15x8 Snowflake wheels with like new 255/60 BFG Radial TA's.  It has Posi, A/C, PS, PB, Tilt wheel.

The car is in very good condition overall -- the front and rear seats, carpet, headliner, dashboard and dashpad, console, steering wheel all look like new.  All gauges, tach, lights, even the clock, work as they should.  The car has the period correct aftermarket Pioneer Supertuner III AM/FM Cassette with upgraded 6x9's and trunk-mounted amp (all work as they should).  What appear to be the original manuals are still in the glove box.

As far as the exterior, it presents very well.  The re-paint looks to be a good quality amateur job -- it will not win any shows, but it is definitely strong enough for cruise nights.  All decals were replaced properly and are in excellent condition.  The only variation from original is the previous owner opted for the T/A 6.6 decal to give the impression of the bigger motor.  Overall the car is extremely solid with minimal rust ever.  Some small areas of the floor and trunk have been nicely repaired -- overall the undercarriage, door jambs, trunk and body are very solid.  The only rust beginning to show is bubbles behind each rear wheel.  The doors stick a little when opening (as all late 70's GM 2-door cars did after a few years) but close fine.  All body lines are good with the exception of the hood which needs some adjustment to get it to sit lower.  All glass is very good/perfect and windows operate well.  The front grills are currently disintegrated, but will be replaced with new prior to sale.

Mechanically, the car continues to shine.  When driven every few days (as I do when it's nice out) the car starts without even touching the gas.  Otherwise a few pumps and she starts right up.  The car is not temperamental at all and really requires no warm up time, and it runs, shifts, drives, and stops as it did when it was new.  The power steering pump, power steering box, and battery were recently replaced.  Remarkably, the car does not leak a drop of fluids -- I have never had a car that didn't leak a little, until this one.  The exhaust is in great shape and has the appropriate stock rumble.  The 301 V8 might not win many races, but it has enough V8 power to have a blast driving.  The A/C components are all there and the belt is still turning, but a re-charge is in order to get it all working.

This Pontiac is really unique in that there are not many really nice driver-quality TA's out there.  There are plenty of show-quality cars or project cars, but not many right in the middle.  After I replace the grills, this car needs nothing to be enjoyed at a cruise night near you.  Crank up the Journey, Styx, or REO on the radio and you can re-live the 80's all over again!!

I really hate to part with this car, but now that my '65 Grand Prix is back on the road, there is no room in the garage so unfortunately it has to go.  I have tried to be as honest as possible in the description -- please ask any other questions that you might have.  Lastly, the car does have Dealer Plates on it, but they are from 1979 -- I am not a dealer, I was just looking to get a period correct license plate on the car.

Thanks for looking!!

Lutz says GM was working on 5th-gen Pontiac GTO

Thu, 08 Aug 2013

Bob Lutz was one of the forces behind bringing the Holden Monaro to the United States, as the ill-fated Pontiac GTO in 2004. And while that car received critical acclaim, it was a sales disappointment. Now, Road & Track is reporting that our suspicions were correct - Pontiac was working on a two-door, G8-based coupe before it was shuttered.
In that R&T article, which is no longer available online, Lutz explained that the new GTO would solve many of the issues found in the original. Car Advice speculates that the new model would have look like a rebadged version of the Holden Coupe 60 Concept from 2008, a conclusion we also came to.
That car would have been a big departure from the 2004 to 2006 GTO. It has an extremely long hood and short rear deck, with an almost fastback roofline and a wide greenhouse with a tall beltline. The wheel arches were very pronounced, and the chin and rocker panel splitters gave it a race-ready look. Would it have been enough to make the GTO work in the US? We think it might of, but it looks like we'll never know.

This 1927 Oakland is a minimalist hot rod

Fri, 21 Feb 2014

There are hundreds of American automakers that sprung up during the dawn of the automotive era, only to fold into obscurity or get gobbled up by what would eventually become the Big Four (yes, we're counting AMC here). Oakland is one such company, which was the forbearer for General Motors' Pontiac division. Sold until 1931, you simply don't see Oakland-badged cars anymore. Unless, that is, you know Brian Bent.
Bent drives a 1927 Oakland that still rides on wooden wheels. Its original wooden wheels, from the sound of it. That makes this anachronist and his Oakland the perfect subject for a Petrolicious video. Like many of the cars highlighted by Petrolicious, this old Oakland has had some work done to it, featuring a Pontiac flathead engine that's been pushed forward and a clutch pack built by Bent.
Take a look below for a closer look at this rare and fascinating Oakland.

Saturn Vue ignition switch leads to new group of GM recalls totaling 312k

Fri, 08 Aug 2014

General Motors has another spate of recalls to announce. This time they cover 312,280 vehicles worldwide, including 269,041 of in the US, in a total of six campaigns. In 2014, the automaker has recalled 29,079,765 vehicles worldwide, with 25,754,356 of those in the US.
The largest among them covers 215,243 units of the Saturn Vue from 2002-2004 model years worldwide, 202,115 in the US. It's possible for the for the key to be removed even when the ignition isn't in the OFF position. The company knows of two crashes and one injury caused by this problem. Dealers are checking the parts and replacing the ignition cylinder and key set, if necessary.
Next is 72,826 models worldwide (48,059 vehicles in the US) of the 2013 Cadillac ATS four-door sedan, 2013 Buick Encore and 2013 Chevy Trax in Canada. It's possible that the for lap belt pretensioner to retract but not to lock, which could increase occupant movement during a crash. Both front, outboard lap belt pretensioners are being replaced, and a stop-sale is in effect on unsold models until the problem is repaired. There are no known crashes or injuries, though.
