Looking back at Oprah's free-car giveaway 10 years later

Fri, 12 Sep 2014

Oprah kicked off her 19th season in dramatic fashion by giving all 276 members of the studio audience a free car.
Molly Vielweber's Pontiac G6 appears unremarkable at first glance. It wears forest green paint, rolls on five-spoke aluminum wheels, and it has a sizeable scrape in the driver's side door, the scar of a decade's worth of hard use. You wouldn't notice it parked at a big box store or cruising on the highway. Pontiac made hundreds of thousands of G6s in the 2000s, and a lot are still on the road. It's unremarkable in every way except for the front license plate, which reads, "Oprah 6."

Tony Stewart to star in Smoke Is The Bandit web series

Mon, 10 Mar 2014

NASCAR driver Tony Stewart is making good use of his nickname Smoke in new videos inspired by the 1970s classic Smokey and the Bandit. The original is one of the quintessential automotive movies of its era with a fantastic combination of slapstick comedy and great car stunts in a Pontiac Firebird Trans Am. If you've never seen it, check it out immediately.
In the new six-part Smoke IS the Bandit web series, Stewart takes on the role of Burt Reynolds' famous character complete with huge mustache. But instead of trying to smuggle cases of Coors beer it's Mobil 1 oil. The series promises to recreate many of the famous scenes from the movie and includes cameos from other NASCAR drivers.
To complete the look, future videos just need a quality replacement for a young Sally Field to ride shotgun. It would also be really cool if Reynolds could make a brief appearance at some point. Scroll down to check out the trailer and the first episode in the series.

Watch this garbage truck consume a Pontiac Grand Am

Wed, 15 May 2013

When an old car or truck offers its dying breath in your driveway and you just don't have the financial or mechanical wherewithal to resuscitate it yet again, you traditionally have to go to the trouble of calling a flatbed or a tow truck to come haul it away. That usually helps to put a few bucks in your wallet and helps recycle some of the vehicle's parts, but the transaction doesn't seem as final or perversely satisfying as the dispatch service that this New Way Cobra Magnum garbage truck offers.
Okay, okay, so this refuse hauler isn't actually designed for this sort of thing, but it's oddly comforting to know that a sanitation truck can compact a hapless Pontiac Grand Am into oblivion. Next time, we won't feel so guilty about slipping that rusty charcoal grille onto the curb next to the cans on garbage day. Watch the carnage by scrolling below.

DESCRIPTION
The end of an American icon came about in 1981 for the Trans Am. Pontiac had an excellent run with the basic design of the second generation Trans Am that started in 1970, but all good things must come to an end. Luckily for the automotive enthusiast, Pontiac decided to go out with a bang. The Turbo Trans Am offered an eye sight into the future of performance, with technology that seemed so new then and is now common place in our everyday drivers. Sadly this year also marked the end for Pontiac manufactured engines under the hoods of our beloved rides, shortly after April of this year GM would result to “Corporate engines” which are just Chevrolet blocks, for all their vehicles, except for the Turbo Trans Am. The horsepower ratings of the 4.9L Turbo engines where a realistic 200 horsepower and 340 Lb/ft of torque at just 2,000rpm. Even at 200hp, this would still be the highest horsepower rating for a Trans Am until the debut the Tuned Port engines in 1985, and not much lower than the famous 6.6 Liter big blocks from years past.

Exceptional examples like this one don’t come around often, with collectors the world over snatching up every Trans Am available. It’s no wonder that Keith Martin of “Sports Car Market” magazine declared the Trans Am to be one of the best investments in collector cars today! This is the Special Edition NASCAR Daytona 500 Pace Car representing one of only 2,000 produced to be sold throughout the country! Finished in gorgeous White with Black Roof over a special factory-appointed Recaro Red/Black combination velour cloth interior, it is a true show stopper! Fully loaded with factory options, this 2-owner car features its original unmolested 4.9 liter Turbo-Charged engine! Options on this car include; WS6 Performance Package- special white cast aluminum wheels, special Radial Tuned handling package, power 4- wheel disc brakes, and limited-slip 3.08 rear axle; air conditioning, power windows, power locks, AM/FM/Stereo 8-track, cruise control, factory Rally gages that include in-dash tachometer with clock, tilt Formula wheel, Sport mirrors with remote drivers side, electric rear window defrost, Turbo Charger lights in hood with rare Turbo light switch in console, and more!

The Trans Am featured here was maintained by the same, original owners from Idaho from their purchase on May 8th, 1981 through the sale to its only other owners in February 2003. It has always remained garaged and continued to be unchanged from new! Proper servicing has always been a priority for both owners, and receipts provided support frequent oil changes, transmission fluid flushes, and replacing the rear differential oil! Also included with this remarkable investment are the original window sticker, dealer sales order, sales receipt, signed original title, PHS documentation, and a letter from Pontiac to dealers announcing the NASCAR Special Edition package and ordering information! Today, it shows only 40,963 actual miles! Given the nature of the market we strongly urge any interested party to act quickly as Trans Am have been steadily increasing in price over the last several years and show no signs of slowing. If you have ever wanted a beautiful example of one of America’s most iconic muscle cars, Do Not Hesitate!
