Our Porsche 928 was purchased new from Porsche-Audi Northwest/Continental Motors by a family member who liked the way the car looked.  She called it her "blue bug" and never drove it over 50 mph.  She didn't trust the small emergency spare tire, so she insisted on adding a new wheel and new tire, which she kept in the rear hatchback.  It has never been used.  She also "undid" the alarm after she had several episodes of accidentally setting off the alarm by opening the wrong door.  We have all the paperwork and repair papers that she kept for several years.  We received the car after her death and with the advice and mechanical expertise of the people at A&P Motors in Portland, we have enjoyed driving it for the past 14 years.  The 110,317 miles are actual miles driven.  We have new Pirelli tires, brakes and new battery in the past two years, but nothing major needed to be done.

Due to medical reasons we are going to offer this Porsche for auction and hope that someone will enjoy driving it the way it should be driven.  Our mechanic's been nagging us to "take it out on the road and drive it", but we are not able to do that anymore.  The alarm system needs to be reconnected; the passenger door automatic lock needs to be adjusted; the dash lights are touchy inside and should be looked at.  The air conditioner needs regular servicing in 2013.  The Berlin Blaupunkt radio  ($1,300)was added when the car was purchased and she had automatic transmission instead of a manual.  Please read the detail items on the photo of the original window sticker on this car.  Take a close look at the Annual Fuel Cost information if you want an "oh no" moment.  By the way, we get better than 11 mpg and always use Premium Chevron gas.

The interior is a lovely Cork leather, very comfortable.  The external blue paint is original.  The body is in very good shape and it has not been involved in any accidents.  There are storage compartments in the dash, in the doors and between the seats.  The driving position is fully adjustable, even to the angle of the steering wheel and instrument cluster.  An illuminated make up mirror folds safely into the headlining.  All glass is tinted.  The car corners superbly and rides well.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at whcram@msn.com or call 503.281.6625.

Trivia for those who are interested:  a blue Porsche 928 like this one was seen in the old movie, "Scarface" and more recently in "Cars".  In "Cars"  it was named Sally.

Price includes extra wheel and tire.

VIN NUMBER LISTED WITH ITEM IS INCORRECT. it should be 9289200981.

Please take note of viewer's question re the VIN number.  The tag on the door is correct:  VIN NUMBER IS 9289200981.  New photos being added to show:  1979 sales contract, State of Washington application for title,  &  official mileage verification form. All show correct VIN number.  We took the vin from the sales label we found in her original owner's manual and apologize for our error.

Original owner changed her mind when she found out the car she liked had manual transmission.  She wanted same car, but with auto transmission.  Thank you to the sharp viewer who brought this to our attention.  I cannot change the published VIN number on this listing since there is already a bid on this item, but we do have key paperwork since the contract was signed in November 1979.

This is embarrassing.  I found a typo error in the description  above.  Actual miles driven should read:  119,317.

Porsche acquires ANDIAL, will integrate with in-house motorsports

Sat, 16 Feb 2013

Porsche has purchased longtime motorsports and tuning house ANDIAL.
The Fountain Valley, California-based tuning house ANDIAL has been around since 1975, when it was formed by the Arnold Wagner, Dieter Inzenhofer and Alwin Springer (the company got its name by combining two letters from each of their names). The three men met while working in a Porsche dealership in Southern California and then left to start a business that would put Porsches in victory lane all over the country.
Porsches prepared by ANDIAL won IMSA GT and Supercar Series championships, the SCCA World Challenge, four Pikes Peak class titles and the 24 Hours of Daytona six times. Alwin Springer left the company in 1997 to run Porsche Motorsport North America until 2004 and remains a consultant with PMNA, Wagner passed away in 2011 and Inzenhofer plans to retire this year. ANDIAL is still a going concern, Inzenhofer presiding over a scaled-down engine parts and restoration business. But Inzenhofer is retiring at month's end, making it a good time for Porsche to step in and take over the company's operations.

McLaren boss' exclusive Porsche 935 Street is worth three 911 Turbos

Wed, 21 May 2014

McLarens may be exclusive, but there are still hundreds - if not thousands - of people out there who can say they own one. Mansour Ojjeh is one of them, but he doesn't just own a McLaren - he owns McLaren. As in, the company that makes the racing and exotic supercars. Or 25 percent of it, anyway. As the head of Techniques d'Avant Garde, Ojjeh is one of the British outfit's largest shareholders, previously having owned Heuer watches (before selling it to luxury giant LVMH) and engineered Porsche's most successful foray into Formula One - winning the world drivers' championship three times in a row and the constructors' title twice with Alain Prost and Niki Lauda behind the wheel of McLarens with Porsche engines developed and branded by TAG.
In short, he probably could get any McLaren he wanted at the drop of a hat, but also had strong ties to Porsche in the 80s, and this is the car he wanted. It's called the Porsche 935 Street, and it's the only one ever made. Inspired by the 935 racer that won Le Mans and over 120 other races, Ojjeh contracted Porsche Exclusive when it was still in its infancy to make him one for the road. So they took a 930 bodyshell, slotted in the 3.3-liter turbo flat-six from the 934 but cranked output up to 375 horsepower, and gave it the brakes, suspension, BBS wheels and wide-body aero from the 935 racer. They painted it a deep metallic red and trimmed the interior with cream leather and wood veneer.
When all was said and done, a total of 550 modifications were performed, detailed on a seventeen-page invoice and costing as much as three new 911 Turbos at the time. Ojjeh only put 12,000 miles on the odometer, running up and down the French Riviera, and has now put it up for sale at the upcoming Bonhams auction at Spa where it's tipped to fetch upwards of 300,000 euros - equivalent to $410k at today's rates, or, once again, the price of about three new 911 Turbos.

Watch the incredibly complicated operation of Porsche's new targa roof

Tue, 14 Jan 2014

Despite Porsche having claimed the name, targa tops are nothing new. In addition to the semi-roofless version of the 911, plenty of cars in the past have used removable roof panels - the new Corvette Stingray has one (as have prior generations), and this type of open-air experience has been available on past vehicles like the Pontiac Solstice Coupe and Honda Civic del Sol.
But when Porsche took the top off its brand new 911 Targa here at the Detroit Auto Show, it was indeed cause for pause. Simply put, this is one of the most complicated and intricate electronic roof panel removal techniques we've ever seen, save perhaps, for the setup found on the Japanese-market Civic del Sol from the 1990s.
We won't spoil the video for you, but basically, rather than just the roof panel coming off, the entire rear glass area lifts away the body in order for the small section over the passenger compartment to slide back. This has to be incredibly expensive to repair once it inevitably breaks. And we highly doubt you'll be able to operate this mechanism at any speed.
