1969 Squareback. New paint, interior (TMI kit) and TMI carpet. Custom roof rack (from Pedro’s Racks), New tires 145 in the front and 165 in the rear, Empi 4 bolt Fuch style wheels, rechromed OG bumpers, West Coast Metric rubber and seals, Flat 4 steering wheel. Fresh tune up and valve adjustment on the stock FI 1600 motor. Runs and looks great. The paint looks good, but this is not a show quality paint job or bodywork, the speedo, fuel gauge and turn signals do not work. (headlights tail lights, brake lights, and reverse do work)/ The battery tray was replaced at one point instead of the piece being cut out and a new piece being welded in, someone riveted a patch in. It does the job, just looks a little frankenstienish. I just started to get a little grind going into 1’st gear. Since this will more than likely be purchased sight unseen, I want to be as accurate in my description as possible. This is a great running mechanically sound vehicle. I drove it to downtown LA over the weekend and drove great; smooth as silk on the freeway. This Squareback needs some minor odds and ends, such as the seat belts being installed, a review mirror, but overall, I’d say this car is 90 - 95% complete. If you are looking for a Squareback that looks badass, you don’t have to always worry about ruining your perfect paint and bobdywork, and can be driven as is while you put a little work into it. Volkswagen CrossBlue previews a three-row future, diesel-hybrid power [w/video]
Mon, 14 Jan 2013Volkswagen looks to be getting ready to jump into the large three-row crossover game. The automaker has officially pulled back the curtain on the CrossBlue Concept at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show.
Designers and engineers penned the machine specifically for the Canadian and US markets, and with a plug-in diesel electric hybrid drivetrain, the hulking five-door, at least in concept form, should offer substantially better efficiency than anything else on the market. The drivetrain pairs a 2.0-liter turbo diesel four-cylinder engine with two electric motors for a combined output of 305 horsepower and a ludicrous 516 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed dual-clutch gearbox handles shifting detail, while one electric motor spins the front wheels. The second motor spins the back axle independently, make the CrossBlue a through-the-road hybrid.
As a result, the crossover can pop to 60 mph in 7.2 seconds. Perhaps more impressively, the CrossBlue can whir around on all-electric propulsion for up to 14 miles at up to 75 mph. Once the diesel four kicks in, the drivetrain can yield up to 39 mpg, though Volkswagen says the hardware can hit 89 MPGe on a full charge thanks to a 9.8 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. Europeans get first crack at new Golf Variant wagon
Mon, 04 Mar 2013Just last week, when we brought you news of a new Volkswagen Golf variant out and testing in Europe, we had no idea we were being so literal with out description. For it seems that VW has every intention of calling its new Golf wagon, making its Geneva debut, the "Golf Variant."
Odd/interesting sobriquets taken as read then, there's a lot to like about this new small wagon from VW. The Variant will shed some 232 pounds in this generation, and will come to market with two efficient TDI engines. Volkswagen isn't giving us displacement figures for either yet, but we're told the diesels will come with outputs of 110 and 150 horsepower. The 110-hp TDI BlueMotion Varient will be good for a whopping 71.3 miles per gallon on the European cycle, when mated to the six-speed manual transmission.
The German automaker has brought along an all-wheel-drive 4Motion version of the Gold Variant to bow in Geneva, as well, and a natural gas-burning TGI BlueMotion is said to be "in the pipeline."
Volkswagen lays off 500 Chattanooga workers
Fri, 19 Apr 2013The redesigned Volkswagen Passat has been a decent seller since its debut in 2011, but sales have apparently dropped off enough that the automaker is trimming some of the employees from its Chattanooga, TN assembly plant. According to Automotive News, Volkswagen will be cutting shifts and laying off 500 contracted workers in response to slowing sales.
Currently, the plant has three teams running 10-hour shifts Monday through Saturday, but starting May 13, this will be reduced down to two teams running 10-hour shifts Monday through Thursday. This will be done to reduce dealer inventory (the article says that VW dealers, on average, have a 97-day supply of Passats) and production capacity (currently running at an annual pace of 170,000 units, which is more than the 150,000 annual units the plant was planned to produce).
This, of course, isn't saying that the Passat has been a failure since VW added 200 full-time employees to the plant in February 2012 to keep up with increased demand. The AN article says that automakers frequently overstaff plants during the launch of a new product - or in this case, a new product and a new plant - but eventually reduce the workers as things run smoother and more efficiently.
