I am selling this sweet 64 Cyclone for a friend. This was her father's car since 1982 and was last on the road in 1985, when it was parked until now. It still has the original Washington '63 plates and the last tabs from 1985. Though it has been off the road since 1985, it has been ran and moved several times throughout the years to help keep everything fresh. It has 79,056 original miles. We hooked up en external fuel tank to ensure it was still a good runner and sure enough, it fired right up. As any car of this age, you will need to go through it and tune it up prior to putting it back on the road. Some of the options include: 289 K code engine 4 Speed Manual Trans 3.25 gears in the rear Original Chrome Engine Dress Up Kit Cyclone Trim Package Original interior Original Paint Dash Tach Center Console Original hubcaps (note: they are not fully pressed on the wheels in the pictures as we took them off for safe storage after) This car truly is an original, low miles, high optioned car. It is extremely straight and virtually rust free (check out the pictures). The only body damage I could find is a small ding on the driver side rear (see pic), 2 small indents on the front quarter panel where the door hinges are from over extending. and one pinhole on the lower passenger side quarter panel. Other than those issues, I could find no rust (floors are super solid) or other body damage. Door Data Plate Info BODY 63E COLOR J TRIM 05 DATE 21D DSO 54 AXLE 4 TRANS 5 Please take a look at the pictures, read the entire description, and ask questions prior to bidding. While I have described this Comet and its condition to the best of my ability, I encourage inspection prior to bidding. I do not cancel bids for any reason and bid to buy as this is no reserve! Only a cashiers check or cash will be accepted as payment. A $500 deposit is due by paypal within 24hrs of the auction ending. Buyer responsible for shipping. There is no warranty with this car. Sold as is where is. If you are shipping the car, it is located in Walla Walla, WA 99362. Please feel free to call with any questions. Thank you! NHTSA closes rollaway investigation into 1.56M Ford SUVs
Mon, 11 Mar 2013It's taken four years of study, but the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has finally closed the books on its investigation into rollaway accusations surrounding 1.56-million Ford SUV models.
The probe, which centered on the 2002-2005 Ford Explorer, 2002-2005 Mercury Mountaineer and 2003-2005 Lincoln Aviator, ends without the federal agency calling for a recall. According to The Detroit News, the investigation was closed due to a "low number of complaints" - NHTSA documented 180 such complaints that resulted in 14 crashes and six minor injuries, but the number of incidents have been slowing. The suspected defect rate for the trucks' automatic transmissions was found to be 4.4 per 100,000 units, and the brake-shift interlock mechanism failure rate was judged to be even lower at 3.4 per 100k.
Ford's J Mays feels vindicated by Fusion reception
Tue, 25 Sep 2012It's hard to think back now, but the same man overseeing the design of the 2013 Ford Fusion also presided over a rather lackluster period in Ford design, highlighted by vehicles like the Five Hundred and Freestyle. With the redesigned Fusion receiving high praise, J Mays tells Automotive News that he feels vindicated from criticisms suggesting he's not a daring enough designer.
When Mays took over as lead of design in 1997, he admits to having quite an ego ("My head would barely fit through the door some days. I've long since gotten over myself") and the workload to match. With the Blue Oval's portfolio full of premium brands like Aston Martin, Jaguar, Land Rover and Volvo at that point, along with the bread-and-butter Ford, Lincoln and Mercury models, Mays certainly had quite the challenge.
It was in the mid-2000s that Mays took over just the premium brands, and took on the new title of Chief Creative Officer. At the time, Mays endured some criticism for looking backwards to retro styling, rather than setting a new standard for American car design - criticism that Mays says he is free from with the all-new Fusion.
NHTSA upgrades Ford floor mat unintended acceleration probe
Mon, 17 Dec 2012According to a Bloomberg report, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has upgraded an investigation into complaints of unintended acceleration lodged against Ford vehicles. The investigation began in June of 2010 when just three complaints had been received and it only concerned the Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan, but this was at a time when the phrase "unintended acceleration" made grown men go pale. With 49 additional complaints received since then, the investigation has been reclassified as an engineering analysis - the last phase before a recall - and it has been expanded to include the Lincoln MKZ, making for a total of "around 480,000" units affected between the three sedans from the 2008 to 2010 model years.
The ostensible cause is that floor mats are trapping the accelerator pedal, but according to a Ford statement at the time, the entrapment is due to owners placing the optional all-weather floor mats, or aftermarket floor mats, on top of the car's standard floor mats. NHTSA has backed up that assessment, pinning the blame on "unsecured or double stacked floor mats."
On the face of it, it would appear that NHTSA has upgraded the status not because of Ford's error, but owner error, and Ford has stated publicly that it is "disappointed" in NHTSA's move. On top of NHTSA still being skittish after that other unintended acceleration debacle, it could be seen to be taking its time investigating all of the variables: it's reported that Ford changed its accelerator pedal design in 2010, a "heel blocker" in the floorpan has been considered a potential culprit in how the floor mats could be trapping the pedal, some drivers have said the floor mats weren't anywhere near the pedal, and according to a report in the LA Times, in "a letter sent by Ford to NHTSA in August 2010, the automaker said it found three injuries and one fatality that 'may have resulted from the alleged defect.'"
